Structured Outputs vs JSON Mode: Which Should You Use for LLM API Calls in 2026?
#3
There's been a lot of debate recently about the best way to get structured data back from LLMs. With the latest API updates supporting both json_schema enforced outputs and the more lenient json mode, the choice isn't always obvious.
The Core Difference
JSON Mode tells the model "respond in valid JSON" but doesn't enforce a specific schema. You get well-formed JSON, but keys and value types can drift:
response=client.chat.completions.create(
model="gpt-4o",
response_format={"type": "json_object"},
messages=[{"role": "user", "content": "Extract user info from: ..."}]
)
# Might return {"name": "Alice", "age": "25"} — note age is a string
Structured Outputs enforces a JSON Schema, so the response must conform:
For production SDK integrations, we've found Structured Outputs dramatically reduces post-processing validation code. You can test this yourself with the AIWave Python SDK examples — the structured output helpers handle schema enforcement automatically.
The Gotcha
Structured Outputs can sometimes cause the model to hallucinate values to fill required fields. If you're extracting optional fields, make sure to use nullable types in your schema rather than marking everything as required.
What's your experience? Have you hit edge cases where JSON Mode actually performed better than Structured Outputs? Or do you always go strict in production?
