title Set up with the web assistant
description Install Copilot with the local browser assistant, then verify a real GitHub workflow.

This is the recommended interactive installation path. The assistant runs on your computer and prepares the selected workflows and GitHub resources. You review the plan before permission checks or installation changes begin.

Comment callbacks call Copilot's reusable coordinator, keeping dependency setup, verification and cleanup in one job. Existing runner labels/groups remain visible in review. Check runner/platform prerequisites and migrate custom bootstrap before adopting this format; follow the existing repository upgrade guide.

The assistant keeps tutorial, first-workflow and troubleshooting links available throughout the session. They open in another tab and retain your answers. Each question also links to its own reference and has a Why this matters explanation. See Use the documentation for version selection and offline help.

Before you start

You need Why
Node.js 24 or newer and pnpm Run the published CLI and local browser assistant; use the official installation guides if either command is missing
A working checkout at its root, on an attached Git branch Inspect and prepare files for the intended repository; bare repositories and detached HEAD are rejected
The intended production and development branches Setup asks for their names; the selected development branch must already exist
Permission to configure the selected repository resources Workflows, labels, Variables and Secrets need different grants; setup derives the exact list from your choices
Access to the GitHub account chosen as the workflow bot Its workflow PAT supplies the Action identity; a dedicated account is recommended
A runner and runtime/model authentication for AI features Your local CLI installation does not authenticate or provision the runtime on a remote runner

For a small first installation, choose Issues, Pull requests, Commits, comment commands and the Documentation issue kind. Leave Projects, releases and hotfixes for later unless you already have their prerequisites. You can use the goal guides to decide what to enable.

If you enable file-changing commands or verification, the runner choice does not install your project's language tools. Prepare them before Copilot in each executing job and add a reviewed runtime declaration. This applies equally to web and CLI installations; setup does not infer Java requirements from your repository.

1. Launch and pair

node --version
pnpm add --global @vypdev/copilot
copilot --version
cd /path/to/your/repository
copilot setup --web

Keep the launching terminal open. The CLI opens a short-lived page on 127.0.0.1; if no browser opens, use the local URL printed in that terminal. Enter its 16-character pairing code, then choose Connect to local setup. Keep the code private. Refreshing the page requires pairing again.

Example screen from the repository's read-only fixture. No real credential or setup operation is shown.

Expected result: the page names the repository you intend to configure. Confirm its owner, name and branch. If another repository appears, stop and relaunch from the correct checkout.

The page offers English, Spanish, French and Portuguese, plus System/Light/Dark themes. These display settings do not change the repository's configured message locale.

2. Choose the installation and capabilities

Choose This repository for your first installation. A new checkout offers Start setup; an existing installation offers inspection and maintenance choices. Use Run the complete assistant when you intend to configure the full installation. That path starts a new questionnaire with its defaults, so inspect existing settings before changing them.

Choose Basic guided setup unless you need every advanced setting. Basic still asks for permission, branch, runner, Project, approval and storage decisions. Customize every setting exposes the advanced configuration. Use Previous question or the plan's Change controls to revise answers without losing the others.

Both modes ask Prepare dependencies with the repository verification setup action? The default is disabled; configured and reused values remain visible. The plan shows whether .github/actions/copilot-verification-setup/action.yml will be created or preserved, the activation state and the configured trusted main branch. Apply creates a failing starter only when missing and preserves existing project actions and auxiliary files. Customize and review the action on MAIN_BRANCH before enabling VERIFICATION_SETUP, then exercise a real verifier. No dependency installation runs during setup. Follow the upgrade and rollback guide for an existing installation; creating an installer PR does not establish runtime readiness.

The six milestones are:

Repository → Setup choices → Setup PAT → Plan → Bot PAT & credentials → Apply

They describe progress through the current run, not a fixed number of questions. Select the issue kinds and capabilities you actually want; All is initially selected for issue kinds. Keep Documentation enabled for the first workflow.

Review these decisions before continuing:

Decision Suggested starting point
Branches Select the actual production and development branches; do not accept master/develop if your repository uses other names
Runner Choose a supported hosted route or a known self-hosted route with actual access and capacity
Agent Select a supported runtime, allowed model and authentication available on that runner
Secrets and Variables Repository scope is simplest for one repository; review shared impact when choosing organization scope
Projects Enable only if you need board updates and both operator and bot can access the selected Projects
PR approval New setup offers recommend, which assesses readiness without submitting APPROVE; use off to disable assessment
Releases and hotfixes Enable after reviewing the deployment preflight and your own deployment steps

guarded approval is an explicit choice with additional CI/coverage, identity and branch-rule requirements. It does not grant merge authority. See Guarded PR approval.

3. Provide the temporary setup PAT

The assistant first asks the choices that affect permissions, then shows the setup PAT grants. Follow the guided GitHub link or use manual entry. On GitHub, confirm the operator account, select the intended repository, review the grants, create the token and paste it into the masked setup field.

Credential Owner and purpose Where it remains
Setup PAT Operator; inspect and configure this installation Local command/session only; it is not saved as the workflow Secret
Workflow PAT Bot account; run installed repository automation Actions Secret PAT at the scope reviewed in the plan
Agent credential, when needed Selected model/provider account Selected Secret or authenticated controlled runner, according to your configuration

GitHub handles sign-in, account switching, 2FA and token issuance in its own tabs. Copilot cannot create or revoke PATs. The exact grants depend on your choices; follow the displayed report and Authentication, rather than copying a blanket permission list.

Expected result: the setup identity and required read access are verified. A failed required permission blocks progress with corrective guidance. The browser does not dispatch or temporarily install a credential-health workflow before Apply setup.

4. Review the plan

Inspect the capability and agent/model choices, branch roles, approval policy, Projects, storage scopes, complete file changes, Variables, Secret names and temporary permission tests. Expand inventories and use Change to correct a section.

Example setup-plan decisions showing capabilities, runtime/model routes, branches, recommendation-only approval and trusted CI identity

Read-only fixture data illustrates the plan. Its model name, organization scope and repository are examples, not recommended configuration values.

Choose Approve this plan only after review. Approval authorizes the listed temporary create/read/delete permission checks; they may leave Actions, Issue or PR history or notifications. Reading or editing the plan starts no setup changes. A blocked check must be resolved before installation continues.

5. Provide bot credentials and apply

Use the bot PAT link under the bot account named by the assistant. A private GitHub browser window can help avoid creating it under the operator account. Confirm the account, selected repository and grants on GitHub, then paste the token into the separate masked bot field. If the account is wrong, choose Enter another bot PAT; the session retains your answers and reviewed plan.

Supply any requested provider credentials, then review the separate Apply setup confirmation. Apply prepares local installation files and selected remote resources. The result distinguishes completed, skipped, not-started and needs-inspection items. Inspect partial results before retrying; an interrupted request may already have changed GitHub.

Expected result: an itemized installation receipt. It describes what was prepared or changed; it does not establish that the installed Action has run successfully.

Install the generated files

For the current-repository path, inspect the local changes with git status and git diff. Review the generated workflows, forms, PR template, guidance and installation manifest, then commit them and open a normal installation PR. Merge through your repository's usual review and protection rules.

The workflows and Issue Forms must be available on the repository's default branch before testing its issue events. If development is a separate branch, bring the reviewed installation into that line through your normal protected process too: issue branches start from it, and checkout-time files must be present there. Do not infer that GitHub's default branch and Copilot's production/development roles are the same.

The batch installation path opens setup PRs instead of treating local files as an installed result. Those PRs still need human review, merge and runtime verification.

Verify the installation

  1. After a successful Apply, Verify installed setup (read-only) checks metadata in the same session. Alternatively, from the checkout, run:

    copilot doctor --read-only

Supply a valid setup PAT when prompted. Inspect failures and warnings; preserved Secret values remain unverified. This mode does not dispatch Actions.

  2. Complete Your first issue-to-PR workflow. Check issue admission, the linked branch, the PR results and the exact revision tested. This is the runtime proof for the capabilities exercised.

  3. Delete the temporary setup PAT yourself in GitHub when you no longer need it. Keep the bot PAT active and renew it before expiry. If you deleted the setup PAT earlier, create a valid one before another local diagnosis.

Plain copilot doctor can dispatch the installed credential-health workflow when available. Choose it explicitly when you want that additional check; metadata verification and credential health are different evidence.

If you get stuck

Symptom Next action
Browser does not open or pairing code is lost Use the terminal's local URL; if its output is unavailable, stop and relaunch from a readable terminal
No Issue Forms or workflows appear in GitHub Check that the reviewed installation reached the default branch
Wrong account or missing PAT grant Follow the displayed corrected-token/account guidance and Authentication
Apply is partial or cleanup needs inspection Inspect the named resources and terminal diagnostic before starting a fresh reviewed run
Metadata checks pass but Actions fail Check the run's Job Summary, runner availability, bot PAT and runtime authentication using Troubleshooting

For a no-change preview, use copilot setup --web --dry-run. The web assistant cannot be combined with unattended approval or secret-bearing CLI flags. For terminal setup, automation, updates and advanced integrations, use the setup and maintenance reference.
