track(platform): assess W600 FastLED build support #390

Closed as not planned
Closed as not planned

Description

Context

FastLED/FastLED#1178 asks whether FastLED can support the W600 platform similar to ESP. This is a distinct platform request and needs a fbuild tracker so support is either implemented, scoped, or explicitly marked out of scope.

Source FastLED issues

Acceptance criteria

  • Determine whether fbuild has any usable W600 board metadata, Arduino core package path, and toolchain support.
  • If support is feasible, add a representative fbuild smoke fixture and build a minimal FastLED sketch far enough to prove platform detection/build setup.
  • If support is not feasible, document the missing toolchain/core pieces and keep the source FastLED issue linked to this blocker.
  • Comment back on the source FastLED issue with the fbuild assessment.

Assessment: not feasible, closing as not planned

Investigated W600 (Winner Micro W60x) support across fbuild, PlatformIO, Arduino, Zephyr, and probe-rs. Posted full write-up on the source issue: FastLED/FastLED#1178 (comment).

    Summary

    • fbuild today: zero W600 references (board JSON, orchestrators, fixtures). Would require a brand-new fbuild-build/src/w600/ Cortex-M3 orchestrator with a custom SDK whole-archive link and wmtools flash integration.
    • Arduino core: https://github.com/w600/arduino last commit 2019-09-25 (~6.5 years stale). Predates Arduino IDE 2.0. Vendor wmtools flasher is Windows-.bat-only.
    • PlatformIO: no platform-winnermicro upstream (404). No third-party platform survives.
    • External board sources (uv run python ci/board_sources.py --search w600 and --search winnermicro): zero hits across Arduino official, ESP32, ESP8266, Adafruit, SparkFun, Teensy, and Zephyr indices.
    • FastLED: no src/platforms/arm/w600/ stub exists either.
    • Silicon vendor: W60x is end-of-life; superseded by newer Beken/Winner Micro parts (W800, BK72xx).

    Decision

Closing as not planned. Reopen if a maintained W60x Arduino core with a modern arm-none-eabi-gcc toolchain and a non-Windows-only flasher appears upstream, and FastLED grows a platform stub.

No fbuild code changes were made for this tracker.
