[FEATURE]:Expose GitHub Copilot "Auto" option in model selector #25239
With the recent change to the GitHub Copilot subscription, this might be an interesting feature to implement.
Reacted by Guille Figueras, Mert Kaan Güzel, Dan Tompkins, Alex Kucksdorf, Klas Stålbröst, RvK, Hugo Woodiwiss, Ryan Schlesinger, xi, Tomás Francisco and 8 more
I’ve since updated it to follow Copilot auto-session flow via /models/session (with Copilot-Session-Token + runtime model override), which fixed the auto behavior/rate-limit mismatch in opencode.
It still does not directly call /models/session/intent itself; it relies on Copilot’s returned auto session selection. But works!
Looking better, so the gap is now on "chat.params" doing the call to /models/session/intent?
Now auto is exposed with a stable id: "auto", and chat.params/chat.headers reliably apply the runtime model override plus Copilot-Session-Token. There is a special session handling for the auto model.
But there is no gap left. opencode -m github-copilot/auto works and shows the auto assigned model in the TUI.
m0wer/opencode-github-copilot-auto-model#1 fixes the routing based on first message using /models/session/intent and scoping the selection to the session instead of globally. It follows the VSCode convention of sticking to the same model family and uses candidate_models instead of selected_model.
No matter which one I chose, I'm still getting the error model is not supported. One thing I noticed is that if I start a new session with the Auto model, I saw briefly the notification stating a model like GPT 5.4 and reasoning something before this error appears.

That is weird. It is working just fine for me. I can do
Maybe try:
"opencode-github-copilot-auto-model@0.2.0"
to force the latest version? Maybe? I just tried and "Auto Claude", "Auto GPT", and "Auto Gemini" work for me just fine. And I see the toast popup with the model chosen.

Implemented a plugin that enables this! See: https://github.com/m0wer/opencode-github-copilot-auto-model

This feature is also very important now that Copilot Student only accept auto model selection :/

The plugin is now working fine with the npm package instead of the GitHub install. And auto model works even after hitting 5h or weekly rate limits.
See https://github.com/m0wer/opencode-github-copilot-auto-model for the new install instructions.

So I put this in my
opencode.jsoncfileI'm able to see these options in the models list

@binbalenci One thought. Maybe you need the "first" section for it to work? Not sure. But maybe:
binbalenci commentedon Jul 15, 2026
@mathomp4 I did both of those and still not working. Which Copilot plan are you using?
m0wer commentedon Jul 15, 2026
It's for copilot pro+ annual subscription (only for the existing annual subscriptions).
mathomp4 commentedon Jul 15, 2026
ohhhhh. I'm on enterprise through work. Well, uh, it works for that too.
