Skills not hot-reloaded: must restart opencode after creating a new skill #34408

Closed as not planned

Description

@yearzen1

Description

After creating a new skill file (in ~/.config/opencode/skills/\ or project-level .opencode/skills/), the new skill does not appear in the available skills list until opencode is fully restarted. This makes the skill development workflow cumbersome — every edit requires a restart to test.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Create a new skill directory and SKILL.md under ~/.config/opencode/skills/my-skill/\
  2. The skill is not detected by the running opencode instance
  3. Restart opencode
  4. The skill now appears in /skill\ and is usable

Expected behavior

opencode should watch the skills directories for file changes and hot-reload newly added or modified skills without requiring a restart. Alternatively, provide a /skill reload\ command to trigger a manual rescan.

Environment

  • Mode: opencode CLI
  • Platform: Windows 11

Related

  • Skills are loaded at startup; a file watcher or a reload command would greatly improve the developer experience.
