Swiss German keyboard: typing "\" causes subsequent "^" to be interpreted as "\" #3066

Open

Description

@timon-kick

Environment

  • MathLive 0.110.0 (in my application)
  • macOS Tahoe 26.6.2
  • Safari
  • Swiss German keyboard layout
  • Physical keyboard

Reproduces on

https://mathlive.io/mathfield/demo/

Steps to reproduce

  1. Focus an empty mathfield.
  2. Type 3^4 → the superscript works correctly.
  3. Delete the content (optional).
  4. Type \.
  5. Delete the \.
  6. Type 3^4 again.

Expected

3^4 is interpreted as a superscript and rendered as 3^{4}.

Actual

The output becomes 3\4.

Once \ has been typed, the issue persists for subsequent ^ input until the page is reloaded.

Console warning

Ambiguous key binding [IntlBackslash] (insert("^"))
matches
[IntlBackslash] (switchMode("latex", "\", "\\"))
with the German keyboard layout

Additional notes

  • The issue reproduces on the official demo site, independent of my application.
  • The issue does not occur when using a US keyboard layout.
  • On the Swiss German layout, pressing ^ generates a dead key (key="Dead").
  • The problem is triggered by typing \; it is not specific to commands such as \log.
