\exponentialE behaves differently from a regular e with superscripts #3067
\exponentialE behaves differently from a regular e with superscripts
When using a regular (e), pressing the square/superscript button works as expected:
$$
e \rightarrow e^2
$$
However, when using the semantic constant \exponentialE, the same action appears to insert an extra placeholder before the exponent.
Expected:
$$
e^2
$$
Actual behavior is visually similar to:
$$
e \square^2
$$
Rendering question
I also noticed that \exponentialE and \imaginaryI are rendered with noticeably different glyphs/styles from regular mathematical letters.
For example, comparing the regular and semantic versions of (e) and (i), the semantic versions appear typographically different from the surrounding math letters.
Is this intentional?
Would it make sense to preserve the semantic identity of \exponentialE and \imaginaryI, while rendering them using glyphs from the active math font so they are visually more consistent with the surrounding mathematical expression?
