Babysitter: verify the session message-injection (nudge) call shape against a live session #2870

Closed

Description

@dezren39

Follow-up from the #1188 verification (queue task 1384, 2026-10-30): of the pilot's three remainders, the nudge call shape is the one still unverified.

State of evidence

  • The API inventory (files/openchamber-api-inventory-2026-10-26.md in the keep-the-four-repos-healthy goal workspace, gap 4) records that a message-injection route exists in the OpenChamber proxy family, but the exact call shape for "send a follow-up into running session X" was never exercised against a running session.
  • The babysitter has run every 20 minutes since 2026-10-27 and its log (hidden_files/babysitter-log.md, same workspace) states in round after round — including today, 2026-10-30 — "the nudge injection shape remains unverified"; no nudge has ever been sent. The babysitter instruction gates both nudges and finished-session restarts on this verification.

What to do

  1. Against a live, bound, low-stakes session (a dispatch of this very issue is ideal), perform one message injection through the OpenChamber API layer (never a managed server's dynamic port directly).
  2. Verify delivery by the session's next assistant-message CONTENT (the babysitter rule), not by API acceptance alone.
  3. Record the exact call shape (route, method, payload fields, auth context by credential NAME only — never a value) in the inventory doc's gap-4 slot and in the babysitter instruction's nudge section, and close this issue with the evidence.

Acceptance

  • One live injection delivered and content-verified.
  • Call shape documented in the inventory doc; babysitter instruction updated to drop the "unverified" gate.
  • No credential value in any artifact.

Related: #1188 (pilot, closed with this as a named remainder), #1271 (paired-client enrollment — the other remainder), #1338 (babysitter live rounds).

Acceptance criteria

  • The session message-injection (nudge) call shape is exercised once against a running OpenChamber session and the exact request/response is recorded (route, method, payload, response) in the API inventory or a linked note.
  • The babysitter's nudge path either uses the verified call shape, or the gap is closed with a filed follow-up naming what blocks it.
  • The long-standing 'nudge injection unverified' line disappears from subsequent babysitter log rounds.

    Intake review

Related: #1188 verification (queue task 1384); API inventory gap 4 in the goal workspace; babysitter log rounds since 2026-10-27. Risks: low — a read/verify task; the only risk is another unverified round. Suggested approach: exercise the injection route once against a live session during a babysitter round and record the wire shape verbatim.

    — Fleet monitor intake enrichment (protocol §5): verified still live this run (no merged PR resolves it), labels normalized, acceptance criteria appended. Marked meta/enriched.

    • Agent: queue worker (repo-worker-code), lane D shift
    • Session / ID: queue task 4053
    • Found via: queue claim
    • Task: Parked 2h without attempting the injection: this verification needs a full timebox and a deliberately chosen low-stakes bound session, and it was claimed at this shift's tail (~25m left). A rushed live injection is exactly what this task must not be.
    • Expectation: a lane with a full timebox picks a live bound low-stakes session, performs one injection via the OpenChamber API layer, verifies delivery by the session's next assistant message, and documents the call shape per the issue's acceptance.

    • Agent: repo-worker-code (OpenChamber scheduled lane)
    • Session / ID: queue task 4053
    • Reason: The authoritative goal workspace is not mounted on the laptop. The local hatch-personal checkout is divergent and stale, so its inventory and live babysitter instruction cannot safely be treated as current. No injection attempted and no workspace files changed.
    • Resume: Obtain access to the current inventory and babysitter instruction, create a deliberately bound low-stakes session, verify delivery by the next assistant-message content, and document the verified wire shape. Local source suggests POST /api/session/:sessionID/prompt with text, but this is not live-verified.

    • Agent: queue worker (repo-worker-code), lane E shift
    • Session / ID: queue task 4053
    • Found via: queue claim (resume)
    • Task: Parked without attempting any live-session injection this shift. No injection was sent, no session was created, and no files were changed for this task. Prior attempts' blockers are recorded in the notes above.
    • Expectation: a later lane with a full timebox and verified access picks this up from the parked state.

    • Agent: queue worker (repo-worker-code), lane E shift
    • Session / ID: queue task 4053
    • Task: Live-verifying the nudge injection shape this shift (full timebox). Prior lanes' blockers do not apply from the sandbox: the authoritative inventory + babysitter instruction are here, and the laptop OpenChamber API answers at localhost:3000 via laptop-ssh (the babysitter's own access path). Call shape grounded in OpenChamber source (packages/web/server opencode-proxy forwards POST /api/session/:sessionID/prompt; message-queue + session-goal runtimes POST body {text} to that route). Target: finished bound session ses_e5e6dab1346ffeHQhYyu0qxCRa (Queue lane code 2026-10-31 09:20 CDT; final assistant summary records tasks 4255/4318 terminal; idle since 14:29Z). Injection is a do-not-resume marker ping; delivery will be verified by the next assistant message's content.

    • Agent: queue worker (repo-worker-code), lane E shift
    • Session / ID: queue task 4053 — completed (live verification performed)
    • Task: Verify the session message-injection (nudge) call shape against a live session, content-verify delivery, document the shape, close with evidence

Verified live — the nudge call shape

Call (OpenChamber layer, from the laptop over ssh — the babysitter's own access path):

    POST http://localhost:3000/api/session/<sessionID>/prompt
    Content-Type: application/json
    {"text": "<message>"}

The OpenChamber opencode-proxy forwards this route to the managed server and injects its auth — no direct contact with a managed server's dynamic port, and no credential was handled (none needed from localhost). Source grounding: openchamber-fork packages/web/server/lib/message-queue/runtime.js + session-goal/runtime.js POST {text} to the same route; proxy route confirmed in packages/web/server/opencode-proxy.test.js. Optional body fields per the runtimes: files, agents.

    Live round-trip (2026-10-31 ~19:58Z):

    Documentation landed:

    • API inventory gap 4 (files/openchamber-api-inventory-2026-10-26.md) — now records the verified shape, response, and the content-verification rule.
    • Babysitter instruction (Nudges §3 + finished-unverified restart) — unverified gate replaced with the verified shape.
    • Conductor instruction (same two spots) — same update, since the conductor is the live merged babysitter.

The babysitter/conductor nudge and finished-session restart paths are unblocked. Closing #2870 as complete.
