id: design: custom GUI rendering as first-class overrides (from #5679) #5853

Description

Summary

Follow-on design ticket from #5679 — its decomposition sketch names this as a separate design, and the parent's acceptance requires these tickets to be filed and linked. Filed in the 2026-11-04 gap pass (WS-F) so the design work exists and can be prioritised on its own merits; implementation timing is a separate decision, possibly months out.

What this design must settle

Wholly custom presentations — image buttons, drawn controls — as first-class overrides of the standard renderings, not hacks around them.

Context from the parent

The parent design fixes the semantic markup + style-assertion model by which programs-as-websites render across web, native, and custom targets. The parent issue carries the surrounding decisions this ticket must not re-decide; where this ticket's answer would change a parent decision, record that explicitly rather than silently forking it.

Decision record expected

Close this design with a recorded decision (on this issue or in a doc/ record linked from it): the chosen shape, the alternatives rejected and why, and the invariants implementation must hold. If the design splits further, file the splits and link them here rather than growing this issue.

Relations

Parent: #5679. Programme: epic #2056. Filed by WS-F (2026-11-04 ID design gap & expansion pass).

    Triage outcome — task 10256 (2026-11-05, lane code-p)

Verdict: CONFIRMED as a valid standalone design ticket — routed with its tier-2 dependency recorded. It should not be designed before the vocabulary tickets settle.

Fresh verification (2026-11-05): issue #5853 OPEN, labels task/triage + queue/queued + app/id — no hard-stop labels, no prior comments beyond the tracking link. Parent #5679 (Markup & styling model for programs-as-websites) is OPEN and was triaged today (task 10112, lane code-h): grandparent #2146 is CLOSED, the gap pass filed all seven children #5849–#5855, all OPEN. No doc/ record covers custom GUI rendering overrides (doc/ hits are a screen-render alignment feature note and a remote-GUI runbook — neither is this design), and no other issue covers it.

Ordering (from the parent triage, task 10112 — dependencies, not a schedule):

    1. id: design: semantic markup vocabulary v1 (from #5679) #5849 (semantic markup vocabulary v1) + id: design: style assertion vocabulary (from #5679) #5850 (style assertion vocabulary) first — every rendering ticket maps from the settled vocabularies.
    2. id: design: web rendering: assertion → Tailwind mapping (from #5679) #5851 / id: design: native rendering: assertion → OS-standard controls (from #5679) #5852 / id: design: custom GUI rendering as first-class overrides (from #5679) #5853 next, in parallel — each maps the vocabularies to one target class; this ticket is the custom-target one.
    3. id: design: per-target customisation system (from #5679) #5854 (per-target customisation) after the rendering tickets; id: design: rendering pipeline & conformance suite (from #5679) #5855 (pipeline & conformance) last.

So #5853's design start is gated on the #5849/#5850 decision records existing — not on Drew, and not on its tier-2 siblings #5851/#5852.

    Boundary discipline for the design:

Routing: follow-up design task enqueued with the tier-2 dependency stated in its packet (a worker claiming it early must check #5849/#5850 state first and park with that reason if the records do not yet exist).
