Description
Hosted worlds & always-on hosting — v1 — first-iteration design
Part of the Phase 14 core topic #6276 (Hosted worlds & always-on hosting), filed from the next-horizons discussion #1240 per Drew's 2026-11-05 decision. The Phase 14 epic links the whole map.
Scope (rough outline — the core topic's research refines it)
Single-node hosted world: one id server binary hosting persistent worlds on a small server (basement cluster first). World survives zero connected clients; restart/recovery from journal; operator basics (list, start, stop, inspect); the same binary and journal format as a local host. Deliverable: design doc + issue breakdown for implementation.
Entry condition
The core topic's research (#6276) has produced its first-pass findings, and the design-queue items ahead of it (see core issue) are moving.
Deliverable
A design document (in .opencode/plans/ or doc/) plus a breakdown of implementation issues for this step, linked from this issue and the core topic.
Drew's Phase 14 principles (#1240) govern this step: local-first always; hostable by anyone at any scale; p2p behavior identical to hosted behavior; our hosted instance is the public backstop, never a requirement.
Acceptance criteria
- A design document for hosted worlds v1 (single-node hosted world, journal restart/recovery, operator basics) is landed in .opencode/plans/ or doc/ and linked from this issue and from core topic issue id(phase-14): Hosted worlds & always-on hosting — core topic (research + design) #6276.
- An implementation issue breakdown for this step is filed and linked, with each implementation issue carrying its own acceptance criteria.
- The entry condition is checked and recorded: core topic issue id(phase-14): Hosted worlds & always-on hosting — core topic (research + design) #6276's first-pass research findings exist before the design is finalized.

Intake review
Related: Core topic: issue #6276 (Hosted worlds & always-on hosting). Origin discussion: issue #1240 (Drew's Phase 14 principles, quoted in the body).
Notes: Design-step issue in the Phase 14 set: labels were already complete (kind/feature, priority/normal, effort/m, app/id) — this pass adds the acceptance criteria and the enriched mark only. Verified still live: no merged PR resolves a design deliverable. Risks: designing ahead of the #6276 research (the stated entry condition) — the criteria make that check explicit. Suggested approach: this is design-queue work, not a code fix; route through the design lane when #6276's findings land.
