Move generic breadcrumb implementation from JDT to JFace #4495

Open

Description

@LukasHackl2

The breadcrumb implementation currently used by the JDT Java editor contains
generic viewer infrastructure that is not specific to Java.

Move the reusable breadcrumb viewer implementation to
org.eclipse.jface.viewers and adapt JDT to use the JFace implementation.

The refactoring keeps JDT-specific behavior in JDT through extension hooks,
including:

  • ProblemTreeViewer for the drop-down viewer
  • Java-specific element openability semantics
  • persistent dialog settings

The goal is to make the breadcrumb viewer reusable by other clients while
preserving the existing Java editor behavior.

The change spans eclipse.platform.ui and eclipse.jdt.ui and will be submitted
as coordinated pull requests.

    I have already broken the rules to reuse it in CBI p2 aggregation analyzer editor!

    It really is very generic and it's super useful to have breadcrumbs in a big complex tree view so that you can see the full path in the tree even when that parents are scrolled out of view:

    It will be so great to finally have it become reusable API! 🥇
