Consider this comment from @SteveSandersonMS in #1873 comment link:
(and it is not good that it involves mutating the
mainbranch)
I assert that this is "just the way it is in Java". I already researched and dismissed doing it another way, yet the complaint remains. See this comment for the previous litigation of this matter.
I am aware that you're more persuasive than I am. Can you look into this and make the case for keeping it the way it is?
