Subject: Deepest thanks — and one feature request that would change everything for students
I want to start by saying something I don't say often: thank you, truly, from the bottom of my heart.
I am a student. I do not have a laptop. For a long time, that meant I could not run the software my coursework required — Python, NumPy, SciPy, Matplotlib, the whole scientific stack. I watched my classmates open their laptops, run code, and see results appear instantly, while I was stuck. It felt like the door to serious computational work was simply closed to me, not because I lacked the ability, but because I lacked the hardware.
Then I found Conduit.
You gave me a real Linux environment — Arch Linux, running natively on my mobile, in my pocket. No account. No cloud subscription. No monthly fee. No asking anyone for permission. Just a genuine, powerful, honest-to-goodness Unix shell that I could carry with me everywhere. I installed Python, NumPy, SciPy, and Matplotlib through pacman. I wrote my entire practical coursework inside it. I ran every script on my phone. And it worked. It just worked.
Do you understand what that means to someone like me?
It means I am no longer excluded. It means I can sit in the same classroom, do the same work, submit the same assignments, and stand on equal ground with students who own laptops. It means my circumstances stopped deciding what I was allowed to learn. Conduit did not just give me a terminal — it gave me dignity, independence, and a fair chance. For that, I will always be grateful.
I recommend Conduit to every student I meet who cannot afford a laptop. I tell them: this is your way in. This is the door that opens. And they thank me, but really, they should be thanking you.
Now, one humble feature request — the only thing standing between Conduit and perfection for students like me:
Please add a way to display Matplotlib graphs directly inside Conduit — a built-in image viewer, a lightweight VNC or display bridge, or even a simple file-viewer panel that renders PNG and JPG files right in the app.
Right now, the workflow I use is this:
- Run my script with matplotlib.use('Agg')
- Save the graph as a PNG file
- Start python3 -m http.server 8000
- Switch to my mobile browser and open http://10.2.0.2:8000/plot.png
- Refresh the browser every single time I regenerate a plot
It works — and I am genuinely grateful that it works — but for a student producing 20+ plots in a single session, it is a lot of friction. Every graph means leaving Conduit, switching apps, and hoping the server is still running.
If Conduit could render images directly in the terminal — the way kitty does with its graphics protocol, or through even a minimal built-in image panel — it would remove the single biggest obstacle preventing Conduit from being a complete scientific computing environment for students without laptops. That one change would make a tool that is already extraordinary into something truly unmatched.
Thank you for the work you put in. Thank you for the care you show. Thank you for building something that treats students without expensive hardware as people who deserve powerful tools too. You have made a real, tangible difference in my education, and I will never forget it.
With deepest gratitude and respect,
A student
