What changed in Copilot CLI

These updates are based on Copilot CLI v1.0.63 (released 2026-06-16), the most recent release within the last 7 days.

New features found

  1. deferTools MCP server config option — Keeps a server's tools always available even when Copilot's tool-search feature is active. Previously, Copilot could silently hide tools it predicted weren't needed for a task.

  2. Agent mode is now session-scoped — Agent mode no longer carries over when you create a new session, clear the conversation, or switch sessions. Each new session starts in default mode.

Course sections updated

Chapter 06: MCP Servers (06-mcp-servers/README.md)

  • Added "deferTools": true row to the MCP server config reference table inside the "New to JSON?" callout
  • Added a beginner-friendly explanation of what tool search is and when to use deferTools

Chapter 04: Agents and Custom Instructions (04-agents-custom-instructions/README.md)

  • Added a callout note below the "Switching agents" tip explaining that agent mode is session-scoped and resets when starting a new session
