Remove irrelevant dropdown options for installing Node.js rather than disabling them #8638
On https://nodejs.org/en/download, the irrelevant options for downloading Node.js are currently shown in the dropdowns as disabled items:
This creates ambiguity for new users who are not familiar with these technologies. E.g., Chocolatey being disabled for Linux could imply that it's supported but not endorsed by Node.js.
And I believe that AIX needs to be removed from this list:
Even though AIX is enabled for Node versions 6+, it seems that all installation options for it are disabled. The AIX option is disabled for Node versions below 6. So, there is no way to download Node.js on AIX with the recommended or community methods.
@ljharb I've now confirmed that it still works. I remember IBM PRed changes to nvm years ago for AIX and my uncertainty was just being overly cautious before suggesting it as recommended.
TL;DR Please do not remove AIX from the drop downs, and instead recommend use of nvm.
Reacted by Aviv Keller, Stewart X Addison, Jordan Harband and Sebastian Beltran
We getting several PRs on this since it is open. But again, there's no consensus here and I don't believe that hiding them is better than disabling, hence, I'm closing this.

I agree that AIX should be removed, cc @nodejs/nodejs-website @nodejs/platform-aix (for the AIX team, do you have a recommended package manager?)
richardlau commentedon Mar 5, 2026
No, because the recommendation for AIX is to download the (now hard to find) tarballs from the website.

We can still show it for the tarballs, I meant specifically for the package managers, it doesn't need to be on that list

We think that nvm might work on AIX, but would need to validate.

nvm works on AIX:

I'm not sure why it wouldn't, as long as it's got a POSIX-compliant shell (or zsh)
