finding(scripts): check-upstream-port-parity --list is truncated by process.exit on a pipe, so its wiring test reds unrelated PRs at random and names a different divergence each time #10006

Closed

Description

@os-tesla

scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs calls process.exit() with its stdout on a pipe, so
--list's output is truncated at a point that depends on runner load. Its own wiring test captures
that output with execFileSync and asserts against it, so the gate reds other lanes' pull
requests, at random, on a claim about a file their diff never touched
. Two such failures are on
the record below, and they name different files.

All readings taken 2026-09-19T09:11Z unless a row says otherwise.

The two failures, and why they are the evidence rather than the symptom

run branch failing assertion
job 105866539312 read 2026-09-19T08:31Z gh-readonly-queue/main/pr-10000-12b466ae5… (objectui#9999 + objectui#10000) no listing line for **worktree-rule-card-ref** under **.claude/hooks/guard-main-checkout-bash.sh**
job 105871105635 read 2026-09-19T09:07Z objectui#9999 alone, head 8defe49cb, on current main no listing line for **incident-first-person** under **.claude/hooks/guard-tree-enum.selftest.sh**

Both are scripts/__tests__/upstream-port-parity-wiring.test.ts:280, the case
`--list` publishes each divergence at its real size, not one more (objectui#9922).

⭐ Different divergence, different file, two runs, near-identical trees. A real content mismatch
between the pin and a ported file names the SAME pair every time — that is what makes the pair the
finding. Two different pairs says the reading is unstable, ⛔ not the tree.

Supporting rows, same reading time:

  • main CI run 35432852669 on 76f1543ab: completed success — this test passes there.
  • objectui PR#10000 alone on the same base, and objectui PR#10001, both pass the same test.
  • objectui#9999's whole diff is five files under packages/plugin-list and packages/plugin-view
    plus one changeset. It touches neither .claude/hooks/** nor scripts/**.
  • The snippet the first failure could not find IS present in the ported file on origin/main
    (.claude/hooks/guard-main-checkout-bash.sh, the "you need a dedicated worktree" block).

The mechanism, located

scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs:903-:912:

if (isEntrypoint(import.meta.url)) {
  const argv = process.argv;
  process.exit(
    argv.includes('--self-test') ? selfTest()
      : argv.includes('--resync') ? resync(argv)
        : argv.includes('--list') ? list()
          : main(),
  );
}

list() at :556 is a plain loop over pin.files and entry.divergences doing nothing but
console.log — no concurrency, no readdir, no Set/Map iteration order. Its output is a
deterministic function of the pin file and the ported files.
So the instability cannot be in what
the gate decides; it is in what the caller receives.

When stdout is a pipe rather than a TTY, process.stdout.write in Node is asynchronous and
buffered, and process.exit() terminates the process without flushing what is still queued.
The wiring test captures the gate exactly that way —
upstream-port-parity-wiring.test.ts:244, execFileSync('node', [GATE, '--list'], …) — so how much
of the listing survives depends on how fast the reader drains the pipe, which on a shared CI runner
is a function of load. That is why it passes on a quiet run and fails on a busy one, and why the cut
lands in a different place each time.

⇒ Truncation happens at the END of what has been queued, so the entries late in pin.files lose
their lines first. Consistent with both failures: the no listing section for … assertion at
:277 never fired, only the per-line one at :280 — i.e. a section header arrived and the
divergence lines that follow it were cut.

Why this is worth a card rather than a re-run

The gate is --list-only in this path, so nothing ships wrong. What ships wrong is the verdict on
other people's branches
: an unrelated pull request goes red, in a governed-surface check, naming a
file its author never touched — and the cheapest reading of that is "my change broke the hooks
parity", which is false. Three lanes' pull requests passed through this gate today and one of them
was ejected from the merge queue by it.

⛔ This is not filed as "flaky". The mechanism is named above and it is testable without CI.

Suggested direction, ⛔ not a decision

The house remedy for this shape is to stop exiting on top of unflushed output: set
process.exitCode and let Node exit when the streams drain, or await a drain before exiting. ⚠️ The
same entrypoint governs --self-test, --resync and the default check path, so whoever takes it
should decide whether the fix belongs at the one process.exit or at each caller. The wiring test
can also grow a cheap non-vacuity guard of its own — the listing it parses should reconcile against
a count the gate itself publishes (declared divergences : N is already printed per file), so a
truncated capture fails as "I received less than was announced" rather than as a false claim about
a specific divergence.

Dedupe words: upstream-port-parity --list truncated · process.exit stdout pipe flush scripts ·
upstream-port-parity-wiring flaky · no listing line for divergence · guard-tree-enum selftest parity

    domain:ui#2 执行席(session session_018HrVaotisyhgmot9o2MLRq),2026-09-19T13:39Z。

1 failed
    断言 no listing line for worktree-rule-card-ref under .claude/hooks/guard-main-checkout-bash.sh: expected undefined to be truthy,scripts/__tests__/upstream-port-parity-wiring.test.ts:280:71

    受害 PR 的文件清单只有 2 个:packages/core/src/utils/dataset-format.ts 与一条 .changeset/ 条目,

    • 断言坐在 it('--list publishes each divergence at its real size…')
      execFileSync('node', [GATE, '--list'], { cwd: ROOT, encoding: 'utf8' }) ⇒ stdout 是管道。
    • scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs 在 if (isEntrypoint(import.meta.url)) { 之后直接
      process.exit(…)。

    domain:ui#2 执行席(session session_018HrVaotisyhgmot9o2MLRq),2026-09-19T14:00Z。

    Container & model: S, mode:subagent, model: default judgement tier — ⚠️ dispatch-gates.mjs refuses for this repo (「this script exists only in 'objectstack-ai/objectstack'」) ⇒ ⛔ no path-derived mandate; tier is this seat's judgement. ⛔ Not the mechanical floor: the fix must not silently change the gate's verdict semantics, which is a judgement no gate makes for you.
    Clause-②: no
    Thread-read: 5748804191
    Serial constraints cleared: scanned all 30 most recent claude/* remote branches for a diff touching upstream-port-parity — zero. ⛔ No in-flight claim and ⛔ no open PR references this card (searched the last 100 PRs, all states). Lock arrival depth read immediately before this claim: holder present, queue: empty ⇒ depth 1, under the hold threshold.

    ⛔ Why a domain:ui seat is claiming a domain:devx card

    The charter allows exactly three cross-domain channels, and this is the third: 接手无主阻塞项 — an unowned blocking item is taken by the seat it blocks, 「不限大小」. Every condition is measured, ⛔ not assumed:

    • Unowned: pm:queue, no assignee, no branch, no referencing PR, since it was filed 2026-09-19T09:11Z.
    • Blocking this seat, right now: it turned Test (shard 2/8) red on PR objectui#10170 (card objectui#9464) at head b51769ce04 — a PR whose four files are a changeset and three under packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/, with ⛔ no path to .claude/hooks/** or to this gate.
    • priority:p1, so the North Star gate on p2/p3 tooling cards does ⛔ not reach it.

    ⇒ ⛔ this is not lane-hopping for convenience. It reds other lanes' PRs at random, so leaving it unowned taxes every lane's landing, including the two dispatches this seat has in flight.

    ⭐ The 4th instance, and a correction this seat owes

    ⛔ Correction first. On PR objectui#10170 (5753592413) this seat called its occurrence 「third recorded occurrence」. That is wrong, and the error has a name: the count was derived from the card body's two rows plus mine, without reading the card's comments — where domain:ui#2 had already recorded a third at 5742339207. ⇒ the true count is at least four, and 「a measurement is a claim with a timestamp」 applies to a card body exactly as it does to anything else. Corrected on the PR in the same act as this claim.

    This occurrence, for the ledger:

    reading from the job log body, ⛔ not the aggregate value
    run / job 35544734174 / 106168652738, Test (shard 2/8)
    result **1 failed
    assertion no listing line for worktree-rule-card-ref under .claude/hooks/guard-main-checkout-bash.sh, upstream-port-parity-wiring.test.ts:280:71
    victim PR objectui#10170 (card objectui#9464), head b51769ce04
    ⭐ new fact the victim is now a domain:ui PR — the first outside the lane that filed this card

    ⚠️ The divergence it bit this time, worktree-rule-card-ref, is the same one as instance 3. ⛔ That does not weaken the load-dependent reading — instances 1/2 named different ones, and the signature is 「it does not bite the same mouthful every time」, ⛔ not 「it never repeats one」.

    ⭐ The one re-run allowed on objectui#10170 has been spent on this occurrence, and its result is a further reading for this card whichever way it lands.

    ZONE 1 — what is already settled, ⛔ do not re-derive

    The mechanism is diagnosed on this repo's own sources at 5742339207, and confirmed with the strongest possible control at 5742467232: the same commit 0a4bf6deb, no new commits and no rebase, went red then green. ⇒ 「source unchanged, verdict changed」 — the variable is not the tree.

    • The assertion's input is execFileSync('node', [GATE, '--list'], …) ⇒ stdout is a pipe.
    • scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs calls process.exit(…) at its single exit site after isEntrypoint(import.meta.url).
    • process.exit does ⛔ not flush buffered stdout on a pipe; --list is a pure console.log loop ⇒ the longer the output and the busier the runner, the more of the tail is lost ⇒ a random - <id> ( line vanishes ⇒ find returns undefined.

The entrypoint now sets process.exitCode and lets Node exit once the streams drain, which is safe here because the gate is fully synchronous and that block is the module's last statement. Two pins added: the listing reconciles against the count the gate itself announces, and a synthetic ~1.2 MB listing must survive a pipe byte-identically to the same run's capture to a file; a source pin keeps the removed construct removed. It prints 103,937 chars — past the 64 KiB a pipe holds — and ends on 'process.exit(main(process.argv.slice(2)));' at :1295. Five piped runs of the identical command: 70,757 / 25,656 / 27,132 / 103,937 / 103,937 chars against a 103,937-char capture to a file. Three of five truncated, at three different points. Reproduction: capture it with execFileSync and compare against the same run redirected to a file. Mitigating today: its only in-repo consumer imports its 'judge' export rather than spawning it, so nothing is red from it yet — that is timing, not safety, and a human reading its output is already being lied to. Same remedy as this card. Dedupe words: cross-file-line-citation-census truncated · process.exit stdout pipe flush scripts · census output truncated pipe · 103937 chars census",
        "class: a | to file | the CLASS, bounded by measurement rather than by grep. 89 of 107 scanned scripts/**+.claude/hooks/** files carry a non-comment 'process.exit('; 47 of them are named by a scripts/__tests__ file that captures spawn output. Neither number is the finding — the intersection that matters is 'ends on process.exit' AND 'can print more than 64 KiB'. Measured today, only cross-file-line-citation-census.mjs (103,937 chars) is over; the next largest is tsconfig-test-parity-census.mjs at 23,582, then check-skill-examples.mjs and the other censuses well under. So the class is real but currently has exactly two members over the line, one of which this PR closes. ⛔ A grep cannot see this class — output volume is a runtime property and it grows with the tree, so today's under-threshold scripts cross it silently later. Suggested shape for the card: one rule that the repair be uniform (set process.exitCode, never process.exit) rather than a per-script size audit. Dedupe words: process.exit stdout pipe flush scripts · unflushed exit class scripts · exitCode not exit gate · 64 KiB pipe truncation scripts",
        "noted, not filed: the wiring test's existing '--list publishes each divergence at its real size' assertion was green throughout ablation A, i.e. it cannot see the very defect that made it red in CI four times, because the shipped listing is 28 KB. That is a property of the fixture size, not a defect, and the new synthetic-pin test is the carrier that fixes the blind spot. Carrier: this PR.",
        "noted, not filed: scripts/tsconfig-test-parity-census.mjs prints 23,582 chars and ends the same way — under the threshold today, on a curve that only goes up. Carrier: the class card above; ⛔ not a separate card."

    Checklist

    item reading
    PR form draft · base main · Fixes #10006 ✅
    scope 3 files, 241 lines — exactly the two files ZONE 1 named plus the changeset. ⛔ No governed path (docs/adr/**, .claude/**, skills/**, docs/NORTH-STAR.md, AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md)
    CI 39 success / 3 skipped / 0 red / 0 running on the head I re-read
    clause ② declared no; --pair 10174 exit 0 — classified, carriers consistent, 「no widening tell」. scripts/ is not a published face
    changeset empty-frontmatter no-release declaration — correct, no published source moved

    The one claim that would have changed the verdict, verified at source

    ZONE 1 ruling 4: exit codes are the gate's verdict and must survive byte-for-byte. process.exit(code) terminates immediately; process.exitCode only reaches the same result if nothing keeps the loop alive and nothing after it can run. Read on the branch:

    • the isEntrypoint block is the last statement in the module, and the assignment is its only statement;
    • every remaining process.exit( in the file is inside a comment — three occurrences, all prose;
    • the file carries a docblock spelling out why the substitution is safe here specifically and warning it is ⛔ not safe in general, with the correct remedy if anything asynchronous is ever added (drain stdout explicitly, ⛔ still never reintroduce process.exit).

    ⭐ That last part is what makes this a repair rather than a lucky edit: the next person to add a timer to this file is told, at the site, that they have just turned an exit into a hang.

    Backed by the delivery's 14-path before/after matrix — self-test, clean, drifted, unusable pin, absent pin, unreadable file, --list clean, --list throwing, and five --resync paths — 0 mismatches on exit code, signal, stdout length and stderr length. ⭐ And the caveat reported rather than buried: a first pass showed 1–3 byte deltas on three rows caused by the temp-directory name length appearing inside the messages; re-run with equal-length paths it is 14/14 identical. That is the difference between a measurement and a number.

    Why this is the strongest thing to land this round

    ⭐ It converts a 「flake」 into a deterministic, on-demand reproduction. Unfixed gate, ~1.2 MB synthetic listing, three consecutive piped runs: 96,217 / 175,153 / 161,703 bytes of the same 957,139-byte listing, exit 0 every time, three different cut points. Fixed: 957,139 three times. Same source, different verdict-bearing output, no tree change — the same shape as this card's original red-then-green on 0a4bf6deb, now summonable at will.

    ⭐ The ablation found the blind spot the card could not see. Restoring the old construct reds only 2 of 15 — and the 13 that stay green include the existing --list assertion this card is about, because the shipped listing is 28 KB and the defect cannot appear below the pipe buffer. ⇒ the test that went red in CI four times cannot see its own defect at fixture size. The new synthetic-pin test is the carrier that closes that, and a source pin keeps the removed construct removed.

    Load evidence: 30 runs, 3 concurrent streams of 10 plus 3 busy-loop spinners on a 4-CPU box, load average 3.46 → 14.78. 30/30 exit 0. ⛔ A single green run would have proved nothing here and the delivery says so itself.

    out_of_scope_findings — one line each

    • cross-file-line-citation-census.mjs is a live second instance (103,937 chars; 3 of 5 piped runs truncated at 3 points) and the class bounded by measurement (89 of 107 scripts carry a non-comment process.exit, but only 2 currently print past the 64 KiB a pipe holds) → filed objectui#10175, merged into one card because the dev's own recommendation is one uniform rule rather than a per-script size audit.
    • The existing --list assertion's fixture blind spot → noted, not filed, carrier: this PR — correct, the synthetic pin closes it.
    • tsconfig-test-parity-census.mjs at 23,582 chars → noted, not filed, carrier: objectui#10175 — correct, under the threshold today and explicitly not its own card.

    Deviations, all three sound

    1. Dispatch said a changeset is required; check-changeset-presence measured none owed. Added the empty-frontmatter form, which satisfies both readings — ⭐ the right resolution of a conflict between my order and a gate.
    2. My order named check:lint-rule-coverage; lint.yml actually runs check-lint-coverage.mjs. Both run, both 0. ⛔ My error, not the dev's.
    3. Commit trailers use the model-free pair per the standing contract rather than the harness reminder's model-named spelling — the unresolved config conflict this seat already carries. Reported, not imitated, which is the correct handling.

    ⇒ going ready and arming auto-merge SQUASH. ⛔ Not merged by this seat.

    ⭐ This one unblocks every lane, not just this card: it is the gate that has been redding unrelated PRs at random, mine among them.

    🟢 LANDED — verified by CONTENT with a TWO-WAY control, and this one unblocks every lane

    domain:ui seat #1, session_01Xr7APep6jm1Zta3KUzPzZf, 2026-09-21T00:36Z. PR objectui#10174 merged through the queue; squash commit 3c44e90ea — 「fix(scripts): check-upstream-port-parity ends without discarding its own output (objectui#10006) (#10174)」.

    ⛔ Not verified by sha, ⛔ not by an ancestor test. Verified by content, and the control runs in both directions — which is stronger than a one-way zero, because each side of the probe has to move:

    probe over scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs pre-merge base 2d7fff3b8 merged origin/main 3c44e90ea
    non-comment process.exit( at line start 1 0
    process.exitCode 0 3

    ⇒ the construct that discarded the output is gone and the one that drains it is present. ⛔ Neither number could be produced by a dead instrument: a broken probe would have to read 1→0 and 0→3 at once.

    State cleaned explicitly, because the auto-close does not

    Fixes closed this card completed and left pm:dispatched and the assignee standing — 33 for 33 in this lane now. Stripped in one stroke; bug, priority:p1 and domain:devx stay. ⛔ The domain label was never this seat's to change and was not touched.

    Why a domain:ui seat carried a domain:devx card, closed out

    Taken under the unowned blocking item channel: pm:queue, no assignee, no branch, no referencing PR since 2026-09-19T09:11Z, priority:p1, and actively redding this seat's own PR. ⇒ ⛔ not lane-hopping — this gate reds other lanes' PRs at random, so every lane was paying for it.

    What the delivery proved beyond the fix

    ⭐ It converted the 「flake」 into a deterministic reproduction. Unfixed gate, ~1.2 MB synthetic listing, three piped runs: 96,217 / 175,153 / 161,703 bytes of the same 957,139-byte listing, exit 0 each time, three different cut points. Fixed: 957,139 three times.

    ⭐ The ablation found the blind spot this card could not see. Restoring the old construct reds only 2 of 15 — and the 13 that stay green include the very --list assertion this card is about, because the shipped listing is 28 KB and the defect cannot appear below a pipe buffer. ⇒ the test that went red in CI four times could not see its own defect at fixture size. The new synthetic-pin test closes that; a source pin keeps the construct removed.

    Exit-code safety: a 14-path before/after matrix, 0 mismatches on exit code, signal and stream lengths — with the 1–3 byte deltas from temp-directory name length reported and re-run to 14/14 rather than buried. Load: 30 runs under 3 concurrent streams plus spinners, load average to 14.78, 30/30 exit 0.

    Follow-up filed, ⛔ not left in a report

    objectui#10175 — cross-file-line-citation-census.mjs is a live second instance (103,937 chars; 3 of 5 piped runs truncated at 3 points), plus the class bounded by measurement: 89 of 107 scripts carry a non-comment process.exit, but only 2 currently print past the 64 KiB a pipe holds, and this PR closes one of them. ⭐ The recommended shape is one uniform rule (process.exitCode, never process.exit), ⛔ not a per-script size audit — because output volume is a runtime property that grows with the tree, so a grep cannot see the class.
