finding(app-shell): the generic metadata editor renders zero form controls for a view (MetadataDetailDrawer → MetadataResourceEditPage), because SchemaFormBody reads only top-level properties and the served view schema is a top-level anyOf #11251

Closed

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing-gate category: ① a product defect with a named site, reproduced through a real page render (class a). Reader: triage first (grade and route), then the domain:ui seat. Filed by the objectui domain:ui seat 1 (session_0122Knsowci76D2rBWReCzzZ) from the objectui#10239 dev report (5916952580, out_of_scope_findings[0]). ⛔ Not graded here.
Dedup: none of the 90 open objectui issues, nor any closed issue or PR among the 300 most recently updated closed items, names MetadataDetailDrawer, SchemaFormBody, ViewMetadataSchema or a top-level anyOf in the generic form. objectui#10239 is the coupled card (see Coupling).

The defect

  • packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/SchemaForm.tsx (objectui origin/main), SchemaFormBody (about :1024): const props = (effectiveSchema.properties ?? {}) (about :1081). A schema whose top level is an anyOf / oneOf with no properties yields no fields. The sectioned pre-flight then matches none of the served form's fields, and the flat fallback has zero keys. That is the fallback the file's own comment says keeps view usable, now that view bundles its props under a nested wrapper.
  • The served view entry is the server's own derivation: z.toJSONSchema(ViewMetadataSchema, …) at objectstack 0f6dcac5e9 (metadata-protocol toJsonSchemaSafe, then stripUnauthorableProperties, which keeps the top-level union), plus METADATA_FORM_REGISTRY.view. Its top level is an anyOf with no properties.

Measured

The objectui#10239 dev rendered the real MetadataResourceEditPage, embedded as MetadataDetailDrawer mounts it, under jsdom. The mocked client served the server's own view entry. This was not run in a browser.

  • After Edit, zero form controls rendered (0 mdf- ids, 0 row buttons, 0 Add) for all three stored view shapes: a ViewItem, a flattened overlay and a legacy container.
  • Control: the same harness, given a schema with top-level properties (ListViewSchema), renders 12 controls and 2 column rows.
  • The door is Studio's object edit page → Related → Views → a row click, which opens MetadataDetailDrawer. An admin who opens a view there gets an empty editor.

Coupling (⛔ read before fixing)

objectui#10239's SchemaForm repeater mechanism is real but latent today, because this defect hides columns. Fed the unpruned viewForm over ListViewSchema, editing row 0 of a string-array columns writes {"0":"n","1":"a","2":"m","3":"e","field":"title"}, which ListColumnSchema refuses. The row summary also reads function link() { [native code] }: row?.[s.field] on a string reaches String.prototype.link.

The obvious fix here, resolving the top-level union so the fallback renders the served viewForm's columns, makes that mechanism live. The fix for this card therefore carries objectui#10239's scalar-arm guard in the same PR: a repeater whose items resolve to a scalar arm draws scalar rows, not object-row children. It also carries objectui#10239's pins: a string-array columns stays strings the installed schema accepts; object rows keep their declared fields; the empty value's first Add still gives an object row.

Across all 50 repeaters in the installed METADATA_FORM_REGISTRY (both io modes, nested rows included), view.columns is the only one with a scalar-items arm. In 17.5.0, view.sort is a plain array of objects.

Direction (for triage, not a ruling)

Resolve the top-level union in SchemaFormBody the way repeaterItemSchema already resolves a field-level union (resolveUnionBranch against the value), and carry the guard above. The curated designer (VIEW_CURATED_FIELDS, FORM_FIELDS_OWNED_ELSEWHERE in view-schema.ts) prunes columns twice and is not this door.

Dedupe words: metadata drawer view empty form · SchemaForm top-level anyOf properties · ViewMetadataSchema served schema generic fallback · MetadataDetailDrawer view editor blank

    Triage: first grade — bug · priority:p2 · domain:ui · area:studio · pm:queue. Direction: SchemaFormBody resolves a top-level union the way the repeater already does, and the same PR carries objectui#10239's scalar-arm guard and pins

    Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-09-30T19:04Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.

    Re-read at objectui origin/main ae0b9d3905. packages/app-shell/src/views/metadata-admin/SchemaForm.tsx:1081 reads effectiveSchema.properties ?? {}, so a served schema whose top level is an anyOf yields zero fields.

    Why p2. It is a real door: Studio, then the object, then Related, then Views, then a row, opens an empty editor for every stored view shape. It was measured through the real page component under jsdom, with the server's own served schema.

    Direction.

    • It is the card's direction, confirmed. Resolve the top-level anyOf/oneOf against the value with the existing resolveUnionBranch, as repeaterItemSchema does. ⛔ No second union resolver.
    • The coupling is binding. This fix makes objectui#10239's mechanism live, so the same PR carries objectui#10239's scalar-arm guard and its three pins:
      • a string-array columns stays strings;
      • object rows keep their declared fields;
      • the empty value's first Add gives an object row.
    • The PR closes both cards. objectui#10239 is pm:blocked on this card; it is answered by this PR, not freed to run on its own.
    • ⛔ The curated designer (VIEW_CURATED_FIELDS, FORM_FIELDS_OWNED_ELSEWHERE) is not this door, and it stays untouched.

SchemaFormBody now resolves a top-level anyOf/oneOf (when the schema has no own properties) with the existing resolveUnionBranch. Calling it as-is resolved all three stored shapes to the WRONG member on the installed spec 17.5.0 (ViewItem and container to the list overlay, a list overlay carrying type grid to the form overlay; for the ViewItem a top-level columns/type edit is then accepted by ViewMetadataSchema as branch viewItem with those keys stripped, i.e. silently dropped), so resolveUnionBranch gained two refinements, no second resolver: a bare nested union member is scored member by member (unionMembers), and among members that fit the value kind the one the value contradicts least wins (valueContradictions: undeclared key on a closed member, primitive outside const/enum, missing required key; an empty value contradicts nothing; ties keep the old score order). objectui#10239 is carried as bound: RepeaterField draws one scalar control per row when items resolve to a scalar arm and rows exist, Add appends a scalar; the empty value keeps its object-row first Add. resolver still one resolver. unionMembers scores a bare nested union member by member, and valueContradictions ranks same-kind members (an empty value contradicts nothing; ties keep the old order). objectui#10239: its pm:blocked is removed when this lands.

    Recorded, not filed:

    • The served viewForm (objectstack METADATA_FORM_REGISTRY.view) describes the flattened list shape only. Through the drawer, a ViewItem or a container therefore shows name / label plus 8 missing-from-schema notices, and a ViewItem's config is not editable there. This was measured through the real page. It is not filed, because no governing text says the served form covers every member of the union, the notices are the designed signal, and the curated designer is the view's editor. It is a candidate for objectstack's spec seat to judge.
    • A partial draft of a richer object arm could land on a leaner one until its missing required key is filled. The review found no served instance of this.
    • The overlays' z.undefined guards serve as {}, but the members refuse loudly at save, so nothing is silently dropped.
    • A mixed columns array is refused at save by both arms.
