finding(app-shell): after a Studio switch, a pillar saves a buffer that is not the target's: the load window (3 pillars), Automations / Data across a package switch, the non-editable round trip (objectui#11232 family, slice 2) #11272

Description

@objectstack-fleet

Filing-gate category: ① a product defect, class (a). reach: a public door, measured: Studio's Interfaces page inspector, Automations pillar and Data pillar on a writable package. Reader: triage first (grade and route), then the domain:ui seat. Filed by the objectui domain:ui seat 1 (session_0122Knsowci76D2rBWReCzzZ) from the objectui#11232 dev report (5919488482, out_of_scope_findings[0] and [1]). The at-tier review of PR objectui#11265 (5919729760) recommends one family card, adds member 3 and suggests grading it with objectui#11232's p1. ⛔ Not graded here.
Dedup: no card among the 402 most recently updated objectui issues and PRs (all open ones, plus the 300 most recently updated closed ones) names the load window, a previous item's buffer shown under the next item, or Automations / Data keeping an open item across a package switch. The related cards are this family's first slice: objectui#11232 (PR objectui#11265), objectui#11203 (folded into it), objectui#11204 (PR objectui#11230) and objectui#11189.

The family: "the buffer saved is not the target's, after a switch"

PR objectui#11265 closes the members inside the autosave debounce. useDraftAutoSave binds a dirty period to the item it began on, and InterfacesPillar is keyed by package. The members below sit outside that letter: the dirty period begins after the switch, or the save is explicit, or the pillar is not keyed.

# member site state
1 the load window all three pillars in packages/app-shell/src/views/studio-design/StudioDesignSurface.tsx measured at PR objectui#11265's head 3cd7a994d1, that is, after the fix
2 a package switch keeps the open item AutomationsPillar (measured); DataPillar (read at source, not measured) measured on Automations
3 the page inspector's non-editable round trip InterfacesPillar's leaf-load effect, the if (!current || !isEditable) branch (about :2180) read at source by the review, not measured

Member 1: the load window (measured)

This was measured in a happy-dom mount of the real pillars (the objectui#11204 harness) on a writable package, at 3cd7a994d1. While the newly opened item's load is in flight, the pillar still shows the previous item's buffer under the new item and accepts edits on it. A save from there writes the previous item's document into the new one:

  • Page inspector: open landing with its load held, and the page form reads 'Home'. Typing 'Typed during load' gives 1 save of page landing carrying home's document (the hello block) with that label.
  • Automations: open nightly_digest with its load held, and flip the enable switch, which is not disabled while loading. The result is 1 save of flow nightly_digest carrying notify_owner's document with status 'obsolete'.
  • Data: open acme_note with its load held, and add a field. The result is 1 save of object acme_note carrying acme_task's document (label 'Task', fields title, status, field_3).

The hook fix does not reach it: the dirty period begins on the new item, and the toggle and add-field are explicit saves.

Member 2: a package switch keeps the open item (Automations measured, Data read)

This was measured at 3cd7a994d1 through a host that changes AutomationsPillar's packageId the way the Studio route does (the surface stays mounted across :packageId), not through the real PackageSwitcher.

  • After the switch, the Automations rail lists package B's flows (none here), while the canvas keeps flow notify_owner of package A open.
  • An edit then gives 1 save of flow notify_owner with packageId com.beta.app.
  • The list effect keeps the open item (setCurrent keeps the current one when set), and the flow's load does not re-run.
  • DataPillar's list effect has the same keep-current shape. That is read at source, not measured.

This is objectui#11203's shape on the two pillars PR objectui#11265 did not key. Its order kept DataPillar out of scope, so it stopped there.

Member 3: the page inspector's non-editable round trip (read at source, not measured)

The page inspector's load effect has a branch that replaces the buffer without ending the dirty period:

if (!current || !isEditable) {
  setDraft({});
  setHasDraft(false);
  return;
}

It clears no ifDirty. So: edit a page, open an object leaf (a studio-canvas leaf: isEditable false, blocked true, so nothing is sent there), then reopen the same page. The dirty period's start and the target are that page again, and the buffer is {}. If the page's reload takes over 1.5 s, the timer sends {} as that page's draft.

  • It is pre-existing on main: the base had no binding and sends it the same way.
  • The write goes to the item the edit began on, so PR objectui#11265's ⛔ is not breached.
  • Whether the server refuses an empty page body decides its weight. Measure that first.
  • The hook's comment in PR objectui#11265 ("each caller's load clears it as it installs the new buffer") overstates the caller contract by this one branch.

Notes, not members

  • A save of the previous item that lands after a switch still sets the 'unpublished draft' badge, and on failure its error, on the item opened since. There is no write. This is read at source.

Direction (for triage, not a ruling)

  • Member 2: key AutomationsPillar and DataPillar by package at their mount site in StudioDesignSurface, the way PR objectui#11265 keyed InterfacesPillar (objectui#11203's preferred shape). DataPillar is in scope here.
  • Member 1: bind each pillar's buffer to the item its load installed it for, and refuse any save (the autosave, the enable toggle, add-field, reorder) while the two differ. Or hide or disable the rail editors while a load is in flight. The claim says which, and why.
  • Member 3: the non-editable branch ends the dirty period as it replaces the buffer. Correct the hook's comment with it.
  • Pins, per member, through the real pillars:
    • with the new item's load held, no save carries the previous item's document (page form, enable toggle, add-field);
    • after a package switch, Automations and Data open nothing of the previous package, and an edit saves to its own package;
    • the non-editable round trip sends no {} draft;
    • an edit after the load saves normally (the control).
  • Serial: after PR objectui#11265 lands (the same file and hook).

Dedupe words: load window · stale buffer · previous item · slow load · cross-item write · enable toggle · package switch · keep current · non-editable leaf

    Triage: first grade — bug · priority:p1 · domain:ui · area:studio · pm:queue. Direction: a pillar never accepts an edit or a save on a buffer that is not the open item's

    Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-09-30T21:59Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch.

    Why p1. It is the same grade as objectui#11232, as the review suggests. A save writes one item's document into another item. That is data corruption through a public door (Studio on a writable package), measured on all three pillars after PR objectui#11265's fix.

    Why not blocked. objectui#11232 is closed, and PR objectui#11265 merged at 2026-09-30T21:23Z. So StudioDesignSurface.tsx has no in-flight claim against it.

    Direction.

    • One rule, three members: a pillar's buffer is bound to the item it was loaded for.
      • During a load: edits and explicit saves are refused or disabled (the enable switch and add-field included). Nothing is shown under the new item until its own document is in.
      • Across a package switch: Automations and Data drop the open item, and reload when it is not in the new package. InterfacesPillar is already keyed by package.
      • The page inspector's non-editable branch (about :2180) does not round-trip a buffer from another item. It is measured first, since it is read at source only.
    • ⛔ No per-pillar variant of the rule. If PR objectui#11265's binding in useDraftAutoSave can carry it, extend that; the claim says why otherwise.
    • Pins: the card's three measured sequences each give zero saves of the wrong document. A normal edit after the load completes saves once (the control).

During a load, edits and explicit saves (the Automations enable switch and Data's add-field included) are refused or disabled. Across a package switch, Automations and Data drop the open item. ⛔ No per-pillar variant of the rule. ⛔ Not the choice-field write guard (objectui#11253, this seat, in flight in data-objectstack / plugin-designer, with one new studio-design test file). The dev stops on a breach and explains it in the report.

No open PR touches StudioDesignSurface.tsx. area:studio: objectui#11253 (this seat) is in flight on a disjoint source surface; its only file under studio-design/ is a new test file.

    Scope: triage's grade and direction (5920456880, p1): one rule, three members, measured sequences pinned to zero wrong-document saves, and a normal edit after the load saving once as the control. PR says Fixes #11272.
    Clause-②: no — why: an internal Studio view. No schema, prop type or package export changes what it accepts. If the dev must change an export, that is reported and the ACCEPT re-reads it.

    item reading
    triage's direction (5920456880, p1): one rule, three members the rule lives once, in useDraftAutoSave's owned(): since === target && loadedFor === target. The timer, the flush and sending all go through it, and the pillars' loaded reads are its output, not a comparison of their own. All four callers (the Interfaces nav included) stamp loadedFor only where a load installs a buffer. No per-pillar variant
    member 1, the load window the page inspector, Automations (the enable switch) and Data (add-field, reorder, field count, badge) offer nothing and send nothing until the open item's own document is in. A refused reorder no longer rewrites another object's buffer
    member 2, a package switch Data and Automations are keyed by package at their mount site, the Interfaces pillar's shape. The hook cannot see this case, and the state the remount drops is package-scoped. The one cost, an edit under 1.5 s old dropped without a prompt, is what PR objectui#11265 accepted for Interfaces, and it replaces a wrong-package write. The changeset states it
    member 3, the non-editable round trip the branch stamps {} as that leaf's and clears the dirty flag. It was measured first (1 save of home with body {} at the branch point), then pinned to zero saves
    pins six measured sequences, each red at the branch point b4333ab8a3 and zero wrong-document saves at the head, each ending on a control that saves once. The ablations isolate each half (the U vs UA legs isolate the hook half)
    the adapted objectui#11232 pin its save readings are unchanged. PR objectui#11265's claim-target comparison now has no pin that fails on it alone. Read at source, it only gates the dirty-flag clear, over a window where loadedFor already refuses. Accepted as settled behaviour, as the record reasons
    semver @object-ui/app-shell patch: the hook and DraftSend are module-private, and no export, prop, schema or i18n key moves. Clause-②: no (the claim) is right
    CI head f5af9cb96: 43 runs, 40 success, 3 expected skips, 0 failure. Test (shard 1/8) and the Test roll-up, which the record saw in progress, are success, along with Type Check, Lint and Build & E2E
    main since the merge base 13 commits on main since b4333ab8a3, none touching this PR's 3 files. A test merge onto current main (1563d3e10b) is clean, and the merge queue re-tests the merged tree
    scope / governed 3 files, +425 / −55; check-governed-merges.mjs: not governed. Fixes #11272

    Out-of-scope findings:

    • The Data pillar's "last saved" hint (savedAt) is not reset on an object switch, so it shows the previous object's time under the next one until a save. It is read at source, with no write and no measured reach. The pillar exposes data-testid="data-saved-at", so one reading after an object switch would meet the filing gate → Acceptance notes.
    • A failed load keeps the previous item's buffer, shows the error only and refuses every save on it. It is inside the rule, not pinned → Acceptance notes.

    Next: objectui#11281 (the Automations rail's FlowStatusDot, same file) waited on this card, and becomes dispatchable once this lands.

    • PR objectui#11296 (Fixes #11272) merged through the merge queue as 5f2d9676c9, which is on origin/main. The merge closed the card by its Fixes keyword. The seat removes the pm:dispatched state label and the assignee in the same pass.
    • It merged at 2026-10-01T00:44:11Z. Verified by content: all 3 of its files on origin/main are blob-identical to the landing head f5af9cb96.
    • What ships: a Studio pillar's buffer is bound to the item it was loaded for. One rule in useDraftAutoSave refuses any save of a buffer that is not the open item's, and the pillars offer nothing until that item's own document is in. Across a package switch, Data and Automations start fresh. The page inspector's non-editable branch no longer round-trips another item's buffer. The record is 5922218707 (at-tier PASS on the landing head), and the ACCEPT is 5922226492.
    • What stays, as Acceptance notes (no measured reach, not filed):
      • the Data pillar's "last saved" hint is not reset on an object switch;
      • a failed load keeps the previous item's buffer and refuses every save on it, which is inside the rule but not pinned.
    • Unblocked: objectui#11281 (the Automations rail's FlowStatusDot, in the same file) waited on this card and is now dispatchable.
