console app bar: inside an app, the search trigger sits centered between the left group and the utility cluster from lg up, the design's middle zone that objectui#12461 measured missing #12472
Description
This card carries the centered-search half of objectui#12461's design target; objectui#12461 (PR #12469) keeps the other half: the left group (no object crumb, the PREVIEW chip beside the app pill) and the icon-only Edit app button.
Filing gate ③, a task the maintainer dispatched in person, derived from an in-flight card. The maintainer's 「同意开卡」 (chat, 2026-10-15, session session_019YFzJp4o8Ck4NsT1toC4UP, quoted on objectui#12461) covers the design's app bar: app switcher · Preview badge · centered search · Edit app icon · bell · help · avatar. objectui#12461's build item 3 read "The search stays centered"; its dev measured that premise false (dev report 6190092384, open_questions[1], recommendation A: a child card, scoped to app context first). As an in-flight derivation, this card inherits objectui#12461's domain and priority, and the seat that claimed objectui#12461 dispatches it.
Parent: objectstack-ai/objectstack#25945. Derived from: #12461.
Blocked-by: #12461
Serial after #12461: PR #12469 moves the PREVIEW chip out of the right-hand cluster, from the slot right before the search group this card re-zones. objectui#12429 already landed (PR #12466, e869e41275), so the sidebar trigger's left slot is settled.
Reader who acts: the domain:ui seat 1 (the seat that claimed objectui#12461), one dev round in @object-ui/app-shell, size S, after PR #12469 merges.
Dedupe (MCP search_issues, scope objectstack-ai/objectui, all states, read 2026-10-15T10:42Z): "app bar search centered AppHeader search position top bar three zones" → 3: #12461 (the in-flight card this one derives from), #12201 closed (the app identity moved into the top bar), #11912 closed (the Search ⌘K trigger opened nothing outside an app). None is this card.
The problem
Inside an app at 1440 px, the search trigger is the first item of the right-hand utility cluster. It sits at that cluster's left edge, right of the bar's center, and it moves whenever the cluster's contents change (presence avatars, the offline chip, the connection status). The design puts it in the bar's middle zone: centered, with the app's left group on one side and the utility cluster on the other.
Readings (objectui origin/main e869e41275, read 2026-10-15T10:42Z)
packages/app-shell/src/layout/AppHeader.tsxline 507: the root isflex items-center justify-between w-full h-full. Line 509: the left group isflex items-center min-w-0 flex-1.- Line 702: the right-hand cluster is
shrink-0. Its first children are the offline chip, the connection status and the presence avatars (lines 704–719), then the PREVIEW chip inside an app (line 724, which PR feat(app-shell,i18n): the console app bar's left group is the app pill and its PREVIEW chip; an object route draws no crumb; Edit app is an icon button (objectui#12461) #12469 moves), then the search group (lines 726–760): the desktop triggerhidden lg:flex … w-48 xl:w-64, and the icon buttonlg:hiddenbelow lg. - The search group renders only where a command palette is mounted (
hasCommandPalette, objectui#11912), so thehome/orgs/studiovariants draw no search today.
What to build
- Inside an app, from
lgup, the bar is three zones: the left group, the search trigger centered in the bar, and the utility cluster on the right. The trigger's center stays at the bar's center whatever the two side zones contain. The left group truncates (it keepsmin-w-0) and never pushes the trigger off center. - Below
lgthe search stays the icon button in the utility cluster, as today. The phone bar is unchanged. - The
home,orgs,studioandsystem/*variants are unchanged. If scoping the three zones to app context costs more than applying them wherever the search renders, report that with both shapes measured. Do not build both. - No change to the trigger itself: its width classes,
aria-label,aria-keyshortcuts,data-testidand the palette it opens.
Acceptance
- An
AppHeadertest (app context, desktop width) pins the structure: the search trigger is neither inside the left group nor inside the utility cluster, and the two side zones share the same flex or grid sizing, so the middle zone is centered. The existinghome/orgs/studio/systempins and the phone-bar pins pass unchanged. - Browser reading by the landing seat on the HotCRM Leads list. At 1440: the trigger's horizontal center is within 8 px of the bar's center. At 1024: nothing overlaps, and a long app name truncates in the pill. At 390: the bar is as today.
pnpm testfrom the repo root green on the affected files; a changeset (patchorminor, nevermajor) for@object-ui/app-shell.
Out of scope
- The search trigger's width and the command palette's contents; the left group (objectui#12461); the sidebar trigger (objectui#12429, landed); the dashboard, page and report crumbs (the maintainer's open question on PR feat(app-shell,i18n): the console app bar's left group is the app pill and its PREVIEW chip; an object route draws no crumb; Edit app is an icon button (objectui#12461) #12469).

"summary": "Inside an app (variant app, palette mounted, not a system/* route), AppHeader's root is three zones from lg up: the left group (flex-1 min-w-0), a middle zone (hidden lg:flex shrink-0) holding the unchanged desktop search trigger, and the utility cluster (lg:flex-1 lg:justify-end lg:min-w-max). Both side zones grow from a zero basis, so the trigger is centered, and the cluster never shrinks below its content, so when the utilities need more than half the bar the search yields left instead of overlapping. The cluster's search group keeps the lg:hidden icon button below lg, leaves at lg, and three lg: rules keyed on data-topbar-search stop the Edit app group from drawing an orphan divider. Mechanism assumption A2 measured false: on main the app pill never truncates, at any width (label 415 of 415 px), and a long name overlapped the cluster from sm up. The card's own 1024 acceptance therefore needed min-w-0 on the pill wrapper (AppHeader left group) and on AppSwitcher's trigger button, which sit outside the claim's file surface (deviations[1]). Real-layout harness (Chromium 141, the console's compiled Tailwind sheet, the real AppHeader DOM, at de6c171):\n- the trigger center equals the bar center at 1440, 1280 and 1024 in the typical and long-name cases (base: +402, +322, +226 px);\n- the worst-case cluster (459.6 px against a 388 px share at 1024) moves the trigger 71.6 px left;\n- 0 overlaps in 25 of 25 cells (base 25);\n- 390 is pixel-identical to base in all 5 scenarios;\n- system/* is identical at lg and up.\nDraft PR objectui#12487 is stored byte-identical (10532 bytes) with assignee sunhaolin. (a) and (b) are the card's own 1024 acceptance, a long app name truncating in the pill, after A2 measured false. I applied the os-dev rule-3 bounded in-place fix: same card, mechanical, no open PR naming AppSwitcher (MCP text search plus a live control), no new gate family. That rule and the dispatch's fix-at-producer line conflict with the claim's stop line, so I name the conflict here rather than choosing silently. The claim's file surface needs the seat's amendment; the PR body declares all three edits.",

"B: drop it, so every app-shell route centers. Business need: the maintainer's design names one app bar; this removes the measured jump within one app. Long-term: the simplest rule, 'inside an app the search is centered'. AI-error axis: n/a. Startup axis: deletes code, one boolean term; the system CONTROL cell in AppHeader.centeredSearch-12472 flips; the system/* crumb pins are unaffected (measured: they read crumbs, not zones). Cost: one patch round, size XS."
