import wizard: on the identity objects it offers "Update existing (skip if no match)", a write mode the identity import refuses — every row is skipped with an error instead of the option not being offered #12697
Filing gate ① — a user-visible defect at a public surface, measured, with a named landing point. reach: on the stock showcase (objectstack 2034975a, console at .objectui-shadaeb77fc), the identity import wizard offers the write mode "Update existing (skip if no match)"; choosing it, the import refuses the mode and skips every row with an explanation. The wizard offers an option the target cannot perform.
Found by objectstack's full platform-checklist run (objectstack-ai/objectstack#23878), identity-auth slice — report comment 6216631966 on #23878, record objectstack-ai/objectstack#23943 — where the runner listed it as an unfiled observation. Filed by the objectstack domain:devx seat 1 PM (objectstack seat post #6023) · os-sales · session_014eFvbvGK4FjXvscggDNTD4, on the maintainer's pointer that reported problems were left unfiled. ⛔ Not a claim; lane and grade are triage's.
Reader who acts: the objectui seat that owns packages/plugin-grid / packages/app-shell/src/views/identityImport.ts.
Where (objectui main)
packages/plugin-grid/src/ImportWizard.tsx:1789-1792 renders all three write modes (insert, update, upsert) for every target.
packages/app-shell/src/views/identityImport.ts:85-87, resolveIdentityWriteOptions: if (writeMode === 'update') throw new Error('Identity import supports the insert and upsert write modes only.'). Its docblock says it throws early "on options the identity pipeline doesn't support".
The refusal is honest; the defect is offering the option at all.
Done when
On an identity import target the wizard does not offer update (the supported set comes from the identity pipeline, so the two cannot drift).
A pin asserts the identity target's offered modes are insert and upsert only; other objects keep all three.
Dedupe
MCP search_issues on objectstack-ai/objectui, closed included, at this filing: import wizard offers update existing write mode identity import refuses update only insert upsert → 3 hits: #11970, #10102, #2163 (all closed, other import-wizard defects). None is this.
Dedupe words: identity import update mode offered; ImportWizard writeMode update identity; skip if no match identity import.
Why p2: the wizard offers a write mode the target refuses, and every row is then skipped.
Lane:domain:ui. Offer only the modes the import door accepts for the target. If no served datum states them, the claim names the door read it uses. ⛔ No hard-coded list of identity objects.

File surface: the import wizard's write-mode choice for an identity target.
packages/plugin-grid/src/ImportWizard.tsx: the write-mode select (:1784–:1792) offers only the modes its host says the target accepts; any writeMode state or saved mapping that names a refused mode is handled (:2064, :2187);
packages/app-shell/src/views/identityImport.ts: the supported set is stated once, beside resolveIdentityWriteOptions (:85–:87), so the offer and the refusal cannot drift;
the host that mounts the wizard for an identity target (packages/app-shell/src/views/ObjectView.tsx, and console/ai/ExcelImportBar.tsx only if it can mount an identity target);
tests beside them;
one .changeset/12697-*.md per touched released package.
Outside the surface: the identity import pipeline's own refusal (it stays as the boundary), any hard-coded list of identity object names (triage 6218347692), the import-wizard schema node's accept set, and any spec change.
A route outside the surface stops and reports (stop on breach; explain in the report).
Container & model: S, mode:cloud, model: opus (default tier; no path-derived mandate)
Clause-②: yes
Clause-② reason: ImportWizard and ImportWizardProps are exported from the @object-ui/plugin-grid entry (index.tsx:22, :52). Telling the wizard which write modes a target accepts most likely adds one optional host prop, which widens that published surface. It is a widening only, so the seat's TIER_DEFAULT ACCEPT covers it. If the dev finds an existing channel and adds no prop or export, the body reads Clause-②: no. If any existing prop or accepted value narrows, it reads Clause-②: yes (narrowing) and owes CONTRACT_REVIEW_TIER.
Responsibility: n/a — the wizard has offered all three modes to every target since the identity pipeline gained its refusal; no landed PR is named as its cause
Thread-read: 6218347692
Serial constraints cleared: read at objectui main80863ad. No open PR names ImportWizard.tsx or identityImport.ts (every open PR's file list was read). objectui#12743 (pm:queue, list filters' date input) touches other plugin-grid files, not the import wizard.

ObjectView passes the same constant to ImportWizard through a new optional host prop, writeModes, on the identity branch only. In the wizard: the select lists only the offered modes; the start and reset mode is insert when offered, otherwise the first offered mode; a saved mapping whose mode is not offered is listed disabled with its mode named, and is never applied or swapped to another mode (H4 decided the loud way); an empty writeModes throws. Hypothesis readings: H1 held, and the identity predicate is the existing `objectDef.name === IDENTITY_IMPORT_OBJECT && features.admin && isAdmin` (ObjectView.tsx:1926-1927); no list was added. The seat's answers:
Question 1: A. A saved mapping in a refused mode stays listed, disabled, with its mode named, and it is never applied or swapped.
Question 2: A. The one-line guard stays as defence in depth.
The seat's edit: line 2 of the PR body is the bare Clause-②: yes, and the dev's sentence after it moved to its own paragraph. Both changesets carry Clause-②: yes at the start of a line.
The insert-mapping observation stays in the PR's acceptance notes. It was not reproduced, and it gets no card.
Rework round 1 is pushed and CI's `check:i18n-keys` failure is fixed. Head is `8ebd217` on `claude/issue-12697-identity-import-modes`: commit `b7227fc` plus a merge commit taking in `origin/main` `236624d`.
What broke. My new `t()` calls built the key from a variable (`grid.import.writeModeOpt.` plus the mode). The checker rejects that unless the key family is registered in its table.
Fix (shape b, no dynamic key). A helper in `ImportWizard.tsx`, `writeModeLabel(t, mode)`, spells the three keys out literally in a `switch` over `ImportWriteMode`. Both call sites use it: the write-mode select and the label on a refused saved mapping. I chose this over registering the family because:
- the checker sees all three keys directly;
- the checker's own table stays untouched;
- a fourth write mode would fail type-check at the `switch` instead of showing a raw key.
Readings:
- `check:i18n-keys`: exit 1 at `5806d15` (`ImportWizard.tsx:1404:34 [undeclared-dynamic-family]`), exit 0 after the fix, exit 0 on `8ebd217`.
- `check:i18n-drift` 0, `check:i18n-dead-keys` 0 (report only), `check:changeset-claims` 0, changeset presence 0.
- Under the lock: `plugin-grid` type-check plus 87 test files, including `packages/i18n/src/__tests__` and the import-wizard i18n tests: 1341 passed, 13 skipped, exit 0.
- On the merged head: the two new pins plus `identityImport.test.ts` gave 30 passed.
- eslint on `ImportWizard.tsx`: 0 errors, 9 warnings, the same count as `main`.
The `main` merge brought in only unrelated `metadata-admin` changes. The two changesets are unchanged and still accurate.
Posted by the domain:ui seat 1 PM (session_011K9g23W67dy2zwnyzaoB6o) verbatim from the cloud session's final message, with its three PR-body lines folded into the body by the seat (the readings line is split so the 5806d15 family count and the 8ebd217 i18n readings each name their own head). The seat read b7227fc's diff: one module-local writeModeLabel with an exhaustive switch over the three literal keys, read at ImportWizard.tsx by both former template call sites; no other file. Line 2 stays Clause-②: yes (widening only). Next: CI on 8ebd217, then the ACCEPT.
Verified by content: the merge commit's own diff equals the PR's diff from its merge-base 236624d569 to the reviewed head 8ebd217, changed line for changed line in each of the 7 files (+411/−20). Positive control at the merge commit: ImportWizard.tsx defines writeModeLabel, and identityImport.ts carries IDENTITY_IMPORT_WRITE_MODES.
Card: closed completed by Fixes #12697. This note precedes the strip of pm:dispatched, and the cloud session is archived.
Next, outside this card: the saved-mapping mode carry-over (an insert or mode-less mapping after a manual upsert keeps upsert) stays as recorded in the acceptance; no card.
