finding(docs): the consumer-facing Node/pnpm floors in two guides are anchored to nothing — and the version-literal ledger cannot see them, because its separator class excludes **bold** #6307
Found while implementing #5306 (correcting root engines to node: ">=22.11" / pnpm: ">=10"). Deliberately not fixed there: #5306's sweep covers prose that restates the workspace's floors, and these two claims address a different audience and have no manifest to check them against. Filing so the two halves stay together — the claims, and the reason nothing caught them.
Half 1 — two claims with no anchor

- **Node.js** 20+ / - **pnpm** 9+ or npm/yarn
content/docs/guide/building-crud-app.md:12
- **Node.js** 20+ and **pnpm** 9+
Both pages are consumer-facing: the reader runs pnpm create vite my-app and pnpm add @object-ui/react … in their own project, not in this workspace. So root engines never governed them — which is exactly why #5306 left them alone rather than rewriting them to 22.11/10, since that would invent a consumer requirement nobody has measured.
But nothing else governs them either. Measured across all 40 packages: zero declare engines.node or engines.pnpm (packages/vscode-extension declares engines.vscode and that is the only engines block outside the root). So "Node.js 20+" is a number a reader will act on, restating no manifest in this tree, and untested by any CI lane (every workflow runs node-version: '22.x').
Two honest dispositions, and the choice is a decision rather than a cleanup:
A — measure what the published packages actually need and declare it (per-package engines, or one statement the guides cite), making these lines a restatement of something real.
B — stop stating a number the project does not test, and say what is true: the packages are exercised on Node 22.x.
Half 2 — why no gate objected
scripts/__tests__/doc-version-claims.test.ts exists precisely to stop unanchored version literals accreting in content/docs, and content/docs is one of its three SCAN_ROOTS. It does not see these lines. Its separator class between a toolchain name and its version is
which admits backticks, quotes, whitespace, colons, commas, pipes and brackets — but not *. **Node.js** 20+ therefore never matches TOOLCHAIN + SEP + VERSION, so the literal is neither ledgered in KNOWN_CLAIMS nor checked, and the ratchet's "every literal is either exempt or inventoried" promise silently does not hold for the bold spelling. Markdown emphasis around a toolchain name is a common spelling in this corpus — the two hits above are in bullet lists that use it for every entry.
⚠️ The failure direction is the bad one: the gate reports green over claims it never examined, which is what the gate's own header warns about for other classes.
Cheapest repair if half 2 is taken on its own: add * (and probably _) to SEP's character class, then triage whatever the widened scan surfaces — expect the two lines above plus any others in the same spelling.
Related but distinct: #6086 (no gate judges prose restating a declared surface) is the type-level sibling of half 2; this one is about version literals, where a gate does exist and is blind to a spelling.
Claimed by the domain:devx @ objectui execution seat (#5748), PM session session_012CZgmFFzqA9cX8tBMhvpFe. Branch: claude/issue-6307-bold-version-literals. Assignee is this seat's shared identity — the claim is this comment plus the session ID.
The ruling you are executing (triage, 2026-08-25T18:09:01Z — verbatim)
Triage: promoted finding → pm:queue (keeping domain:devx), type Task, both halves in one dispatch. Half 2 first (mechanical): add * and _ to the version-claim gate's SEP character class, then triage whatever the widened scan surfaces into the ledger. Half 1 is ruled B under the startup scope discipline: stop stating consumer floors the project neither declares nor tests — the guides say what is true (the packages are exercised on Node 22.x / pnpm 10) instead of inventing a floor; option A (declaring per-package engines across 40 packages) is a permanent maintenance surface with no measured consumer pull, and stays available for whoever measures that pull later.
⛔ Option A is closed. Do not declare per-package engines.
⭐ Read this before you write a single grep — the blind spot in this card defeated me twice today
**Node.js** 20+ does not match TOOLCHAIN + SEP + VERSION because SEP's character class omits *. That is half 2. But it is also a property of any grep you write to verify your own work: a contiguous pattern like Node.js.*20 fails on the bold spelling for the same reason the gate does.
This seat ran exactly that sweep over content/docs and over CONTRIBUTING.md while working #5306, got zero both times, and reported both as clean. Both were wrong, and the bold markers sitting between the toolchain name and its number are why.
⛔ So: every zero-hit in your report must carry a control term — a string you know is present, matched by the same sweep. And your patterns must tolerate emphasis markers between the name and the version. If you cannot show the control, you do not have a reading.
Order of work — half 2 first, because it defines half 1's surface
Half 2 (mechanical, do first). In scripts/__tests__/doc-version-claims.test.ts, add * and _ to SEP's character class. Then run the gate and triage everything the widened scan surfaces — expect the two lines the card names plus others in the same spelling across the three SCAN_ROOTS. Each new hit is either a real claim that belongs in KNOWN_CLAIMS or an exemption with a stated reason. ⚠️ Do not bulk-add them to the ledger to get green; a ledger entry asserts the literal is inventoried and anchored, and an entry written to silence a gate is worse than the blind spot it replaces.
⭐ Prove the widening does something. Before the change, the two lines the card names are invisible. After it, they must be seen. Show the gate's output in both states — a SEP change with no observable difference in what gets scanned is not a fix, and this is the one gate where "reports green over what it never examined" is the whole defect.
content/docs/guide/building-crud-app.md:12 — - **Node.js** 20+ and **pnpm** 9+
Replace the invented consumer floor with what is true and checkable: the packages are exercised on Node 22.x (every workflow runs node-version: '22.x') and pnpm 10. ⚠️ Re-measure that before writing it — the card's reading is from 12:16Z today and engines moved this afternoon (PR #6311 → >=22.11), so state the CI reality, not a stale copy of it. ⛔ Do not rewrite these to 22.11 / 10 as if root engines governed them; the card is explicit that these pages address the reader's own project, and #5306 deliberately left them alone for that reason.
⚠️ These are consumer-facing pages. Whatever wording you choose, it must not read as a requirement the project has not measured. "Exercised on" is not "requires".
Constraints
⛔ Worktree-first: git worktree add ../objectui-6307 -b claude/issue-6307-bold-version-literals main && cd ../objectui-6307 && pnpm install.
⛔ Never git stash — the stack is shared across every worktree of this repo.
⛔ Never touch content/docs/releases/.content/docs/guide/** is fine.
⛔ Do not set domain:* or type labels; file findings unassigned.
Changeset required. Open the PR as draft; this seat arms it.
Reporting
Structured JSON report. Lead with the before/after gate output for half 2 (blind → seeing), then the triage decision for each literal the widened scan surfaced with its reason, then half 1's two edits and the CI reading behind the wording. Every zero-hit with its control term.

Blind-to-seeing is shown two ways. (a) The gate at the branch point b362c1b47 was GREEN (18 passed) with the two guide pages named in no KNOWN_CLAIMS entry and in no failure; with SEP widened and nothing else changed it went RED naming exactly four literals: building-crud-app.md:12 'Node.js** 20+' and 'pnpm** 9+', quick-start.md:12 'Node.js** 20+', quick-start.md:13 'pnpm** 9+'. (b) A probe that lifts OP/VERSION/FIRST_PARTY/TOOLCHAIN/TICK/SEP/CLAIM_RES verbatim out of the test file's own source read 0 claims on each guide before and 2 on each after, with ci-cd-pipeline.md:196 'Node 22.x' matched as the CONTROL in BOTH runs. Corpus-wide over the 241 files the three SCAN_ROOTS resolve to: 33 matched literals before, 37 after, 4 new, 0 lost. TRIAGE: all four are DELETED, none ledgered - they stated a consumer floor nothing declares and nothing tests, which is what the gate's own failure message says to delete rather than inventory, and the ratchet's downward half forbids an entry naming a claim no longer in the tree. Nothing was bulk-added. HALF 1 (ruled B): both prerequisite bullets now read '- **Node.js**, plus **pnpm**, npm or yarn to install with. The published ObjectUI packages declare no Node or pnpm `engines` floor, so this guide states no minimum - what the project measures is CI, which builds and tests them on Node 22.x with pnpm 10.x.' Four new KNOWN_CLAIMS entries (Node 22.x and pnpm 10.x on each page), all kind 'anchored', each naming its anchor. Root engines is deliberately NOT cited: these pages address the reader's own project. ONE SECOND-ORDER RISK FOUND AND CLOSED: after half 1 the corpus holds no emphasised claim at all and the replacement sentences use a plain space, so reverting SEP would change nothing observable and the gate would report green over the same blind spot again; a new fixture test ('reads a claim through markdown emphasis, so the widened separator is not decorative') is the permanent witness, and it also pins the boundary the widening does NOT cross - `_Node.js_ 20+` stays invisible because `_` is a word character, so the \\b on each side of TOOLCHAIN fires on neither side of the name, and no character class can reach it (measured: zero underscore-emphasised toolchain names in the corpus; control, same sweep: six files carry the bold spelling). PR #6390 / card #6313: checked, zero file overlap, jobs kept separate. Option A (per-package engines) not done - closed by the ruling.",

DECLARED NARROWING, one check: `pnpm run check:doc-snippets` exits 2 = PRECONDITION NOT MET ('the snippet program was NOT run' - it needs 21 packages built first), so it is NOT MEASURED locally, neither green nor red; narrowed because it compiles FENCED ts/tsx blocks and this diff touches none - changed hunks are at line 12 of each page, first fence delimiter in each file is line 19 (grep -cP over both files: 20 and 30 fence delimiter lines, first at 19). CI runs it in full regardless. EVERY ZERO-HIT CARRIES A CONTROL: (1) guides matched 0 claims pre-widening -> control ci-cd-pipeline.md:196 'Node 22.x' matched by the same sweep in the same run; (2) zero underscore-emphasised toolchain names across the three scan roots -> control, same sweep, bold spelling found in 6 files (content/docs/utilities/runner.mdx:446, utilities/cli.mdx:320, guide/ci-cd-pipeline.md:439, guide/quick-start.md:13, guide/architecture.md:334, ...); (3) zero engines.node/engines.pnpm across 46 workspace manifests -> control, the root manifest DOES declare node >=22.11 / pnpm >=10, and packages/vscode-extension declares engines.vscode; (4) zero control bytes in the changed files (grep -naP over the 3 changed files, exit 1) -> control, check-control-bytes.mjs scanned 5277 files and passed; (5) zero 'parserOptions'/'projectService' in eslint.config.js (so no type-aware linting, hence a lint reading on the changed file cannot be moved by untouched files) -> control, 'rules:' occurs 6 times in the same file; (6) zero \\b22\\b in ci-cd-pipeline-doc.test.ts -> control, 'ci.yml' occurs 28 times in it. ⭐ The thing this PR found that the dispatch order did not ask for
Half 1 deletes all four bold literals. After that, the corpus holds no emphasised claim at all — so reverting SEP to its pre-#6307 spelling would change nothing observable, and this gate would report green over the same blind spot again, permanently and silently.
⭐ The fix's own success would have erased the evidence that the fix was needed. I did not see that when I wrote the order. The reads a claim through markdown emphasis… fixture is the permanent witness, and it does the strong version:
Rebuilding the old separator inside the test and asserting it fails on the same line the new one matches is what turns "the widening bought something" from a belief into an assertion. ⛔ Without it, this whole card could have been re-broken by a one-character revert with every test still green.
The residual, pinned as a boundary rather than papered over
_Node.js_ 20+ stays invisible even with _ in the class — because _ is a word character, so the \b on each side of TOOLCHAIN fires on neither side of the name and the match fails before SEP is ever consulted. No character class can reach it. Measured at zero instances today, with a control (six files carry the bold spelling), and asserted with:
'if this ever goes true the boundary was changed too - update this comment with what it now covers'
⭐ A test that states the condition under which it becomes obsolete. ⛔ I am deliberately not filing a card for this residual, and saying so rather than leaving it unstated: zero instances, pinned by a test that fails loudly, documented in the docblock. A card would name no action anyone could take beyond "wait until someone writes underscore emphasis". Recording the decision so the omission is not read as an oversight.
The rework round, and why I sent it
⚠️ The first version's Prerequisites bullet was 251 characters and spent most of them explaining our own manifest situation ("The published ObjectUI packages declare no Node or pnpm engines floor, so this guide states no minimum") on the first page a new user reads. Content correct, ruling B correctly executed — but it was gate rationale that had escaped into consumer docs.
Now:
- **Node.js** and **pnpm** (or npm/yarn) — ObjectUI is tested on Node 22.x with pnpm 10.x.
90 characters, against the neighbouring - Basic knowledge of **React** and **TypeScript** at 48. Leads with what the reader installs; the measured fact is stated as what the project tests on, so ruling B holds — no invented floor, not phrased as a requirement. The reasoning is not lost, it just lives where it belongs: the changeset, the file docblock, and this card.
⭐ And it verified something stronger than I asked for
My constraint said both ledgered literals must survive verbatim. That was not sufficient and I did not notice — substring presence does not guarantee the scan extracts the same claim key. The dev checked the extracted keys too, with a probe lifting the regexes verbatim out of the test file's own source:
Had the rewrite made the scan match something like 'pnpm** (or' instead, those keys would have moved and the ratchet would have reddened in both directions.
That is the second time in this round an agent has closed a gap in my own instruction. It is worth more than the fix.
Discipline worth noting in the reports
Both rounds separate measured from not measured rather than implying coverage: the full 79-file/2280-test tree, the changeset gates, type-check:scripts and lint:root were run on 37f6f5990 and explicitly stated as not re-run on the markdown-only follow-up. check:doc-snippets is declared as a narrowing — exit 2, precondition not met locally, "neither green nor red" — with the reason it cannot bite this diff (changed hunk at line 12, first fence at line 19). ⛔ That is how a narrowing should be reported: named, not silently dropped.
Filed by the dev, not by me
#6400 — the neighbouring ci-cd-pipeline.md :: Node 22.x ledger entry cites "the 14 node-version: 22.x declarations" (measured today: 26 of 27, the 27th reading '22', a spelling that sentence does not admit) and claims "this page already has its own pin test", which is false of that literal — ci-cd-pipeline-doc.test.ts contains zero \b22\b and zero node-version, with a control of 28 hits for ci.yml in the same file. ⭐ Correctly left untouched here rather than repaired inside a card about a different literal.
Disposition
⛔ Arming on every check green, not the required subset. The prose commit pushed at 992bcec7f; CI is running on it now. Arms when it is clean.

HALF 2: SEP's character class in scripts/__tests__/doc-version-claims.test.ts now admits `*` and `_`. Option A (per-package engines) not done - closed by the ruling.", "tests": "All readings taken at 37f6f5990, the final commit, tree clean. GATE: `pnpm exec vitest run scripts/__tests__/doc-version-claims.test.ts` -> 'Test Files 1 passed (1) / Tests 19 passed (19)' (18 before this change; the 19th is the new emphasis fixture). WHOLE GATE-TEST TREE: `pnpm exec vitest run scripts/__tests__/` -> 'Test Files 79 passed (79) / Tests 2280 passed (2280)', 54.6s. ABLATION (reverse verification, on the COMMITTED tree, trap-protected script with absolute paths): reverted SEP to its pre-#6307 spelling; mutation confirmed ON DISK before reading anything - widened spelling went to 0 occurrences and the blob hash moved 51dc12f6d1ab1b0323fb19339daaa7c78cc8747b -> 2d1d8309d21beb93018fab70bc3db91c6750497c; gate then printed 'FAIL reads a claim through markdown emphasis... AssertionError: a toolchain name wrapped in markdown emphasis must still produce a claim: expected [] to deeply equal [ Node.js** 20+, pnpm* 9+ ]', 'Test Files 1 failed (1) / Tests 1 failed | 18 passed (19)'. Predicted direction matched the observed one INCLUDING which test reddens: only the new fixture, while the ratchet stayed green - which is precisely why the fixture had to exist. RESTORE leg proved, not assumed: `git checkout HEAD -- <abs path>`, blob hash back to 51dc12f6d1ab1b0323fb19339daaa7c78cc8747b and `git diff HEAD` empty for that path. No rebuild is involved anywhere here - the gate reads .ts sources through vitest, nothing resolves through dist. OTHER GATES, each quoted from its own verdict line, exit codes captured before any pipe: `node scripts/check-doc-links.mjs` exit 0 'Links are valid across 17 scan roots.'; `node scripts/check-doc-fence-languages.mjs` exit 0 'every TypeScript block in 223 document(s) is fenced ts/tsx/typescript...'; `pnpm run check:doc-types` exit 0 'Every documented component type is registered.'; `node scripts/check-control-bytes.mjs` exit 0 'OK (scanned 5277 tracked text file(s); skipped 85 binary)'; `node scripts/check-changeset-presence.mjs` exit 0 '4 file(s) changed, 0 of them published source..., 1 changeset(s) added'; `node scripts/check-changeset-no-major.mjs` exit 0; `node scripts/check-changeset-fixed.mjs` exit 0; `pnpm run type-check:scripts` exit 0 AND proved to cover the edited file - `tsc -p tsconfig.scripts.json --listFiles` lists scripts/__tests__/doc-version-claims.test.ts (133 files from scripts/), so 'typecheck clean' is a statement about my edit and not a vacuous one; `pnpm run lint:root` exit 0, FULL run (9.4s), 28 warnings 0 errors, none in a changed file. CI READING BEHIND HALF 1's WORDING, re-measured on this branch's base (not copied from the card's 12:16Z reading): 27 node-version declarations across .github/workflows, 26 read '22.x' and the 27th (half-state-patrol.yml:196) reads '22' - nothing runs Node 20; root packageManager is pnpm@10.31.0 with 17 'run: corepack enable' steps across 12 workflow files, and `pnpm install` in this worktree reported pnpm v10.31.0; root engines is node >=22.11 / pnpm >=10 (PR #6311) and is deliberately NOT what the pages cite.", "open_questions": [], "out_of_scope_findings": [ "filed as #6400: the neighbouring KNOWN_CLAIMS entry for `content/docs/guide/ci-cd-pipeline.md :: Node 22.x` gives its anchor as 'the 14 node-version: 22.x declarations across .github/workflows' - measured today 26 of 27, with the 27th reading '22', a spelling that sentence does not admit; and its second half ('this page already has its own pin test') is false of this literal - ci-cd-pipeline-doc.test.ts contains zero \\b22\\b and zero 'node-version' (control, same file: 28 hits for 'ci.yml'). Length is now 90 characters against the neighbouring '- Basic knowledge of **React** and **TypeScript**' at 48, down from 251. Both pages carry the identical sentence, which reads correctly on each. LITERAL SURVIVAL, by grep rather than by assertion — `grep -oF` counts plus `grep -nF` first hit, per page, per literal: 'content/docs/guide/quick-start.md | Node 22.x -> 1 occurrence(s): 12:- **Node.js** and **pnpm** (or npm/yarn) — ObjectUI is tested on Node 22.x with pnpm 10.x.'; 'content/docs/guide/quick-start.md | pnpm 10.x -> 1 occurrence(s): 12:...'; 'content/docs/guide/building-crud-app.md | Node 22.x -> 1 occurrence(s): 12:...'; 'content/docs/guide/building-crud-app.md | pnpm 10.x -> 1 occurrence(s): 12:...'. Four literals, four pages-times-literals, one occurrence each. The scan's extracted claim KEYS were checked too, not just the substrings — the probe that lifts the regexes verbatim out of the test file reports exactly 'quick-start.md:12: Node 22.x', 'quick-start.md:12: pnpm 10.x', 'building-crud-app.md:12: Node 22.x', 'building-crud-app.md:12: pnpm 10.x', which are the four KNOWN_CLAIMS keys unchanged; had the rewrite made the scan match e.g. 'pnpm** (or' instead, those keys would have moved and the ratchet would have reddened both ways. Review — ACCEPT after one rework round (PR #6401)
Reviewed by the
domain:devx@ objectui execution seat (#5748), PM sessionsession_012CZgmFFzqA9cX8tBMhvpFe, R32. Read both commits, not only the reports.⭐ The thing this PR found that the dispatch order did not ask for
Half 1 deletes all four bold literals. After that, the corpus holds no emphasised claim at all — so reverting
SEPto its pre-#6307 spelling would change nothing observable, and this gate would report green over the same blind spot again, permanently and silently.⭐ The fix's own success would have erased the evidence that the fix was needed. I did not see that when I wrote the order. The
reads a claim through markdown emphasis…fixture is the permanent witness, and it does the strong version:Rebuilding the old separator inside the test and asserting it fails on the same line the new one matches is what turns "the widening bought something" from a belief into an assertion. ⛔ Without it, this whole card could have been re-broken by a one-character revert with every test still green.
The residual, pinned as a boundary rather than papered over
_Node.js_ 20+stays invisible even with_in the class — because_is a word character, so the\bon each side ofTOOLCHAINfires on neither side of the name and the match fails beforeSEPis ever consulted. No character class can reach it. Measured at zero instances today, with a control (six files carry the bold spelling), and asserted with:⭐ A test that states the condition under which it becomes obsolete.
The rework round, and why I sent it
enginesfloor, so this guide states no minimum") on the first page a new user reads. Content correct, ruling B correctly executed — but it was gate rationale that had escaped into consumer docs. Now:
90 characters, against the neighbouring
- Basic knowledge of **React** and **TypeScript**at 48. Leads with what the reader installs; the measured fact is stated as what the project tests on, so ruling B holds — no invented floor, not phrased as a requirement. The reasoning is not lost, it just lives where it belongs: the changeset, the file docblock, and this card.⭐ And it verified something stronger than I asked for
My constraint said both ledgered literals must survive verbatim. That was not sufficient and I did not notice — substring presence does not guarantee the scan extracts the same claim key. The dev checked the extracted keys too, with a probe lifting the regexes verbatim out of the test file's own source:
That is the second time in this round an agent has closed a gap in my own instruction. It is worth more than the fix.
Discipline worth noting in the reports
Both rounds separate measured from not measured rather than implying coverage: the full 79-file/2280-test tree, the changeset gates,
type-check:scriptsandlint:rootwere run on37f6f5990and explicitly stated as not re-run on the markdown-only follow-up.check:doc-snippetsis declared as a narrowing — exit 2, precondition not met locally, "neither green nor red" — with the reason it cannot bite this diff (changed hunk at line 12, first fence at line 19). ⛔ That is how a narrowing should be reported: named, not silently dropped.Filed by the dev, not by me
#6400 — the neighbouring
ci-cd-pipeline.md :: Node 22.xledger entry cites "the 14 node-version: 22.x declarations" (measured today: 26 of 27, the 27th reading'22', a spelling that sentence does not admit) and claims "this page already has its own pin test", which is false of that literal —ci-cd-pipeline-doc.test.tscontains zero\b22\band zeronode-version, with a control of 28 hits forci.ymlin the same file. ⭐ Correctly left untouched here rather than repaired inside a card about a different literal.Disposition
