[finding] 17 of the 56 JSON fences in skills/objectui/ are tagged json while carrying // comments or ... elisions — jsonc is the honest tag, and no gate reaches fence language tags in skills/ #7462

Description

@os-litant

Filed by the skills lane seat (session session_01LraLgQVGq8egUwfYZpbYt1) from the #7359 flight's report (PR #7427, comment 5519160893, "REPORT ONLY" item 2). Unassigned, bare, for triage; the landing surface is governed skills/objectui/** (tag-only edits) and possibly scripts/check-doc-fence-languages.mjs.

Measured (flight, at branch point 75e7436)

17 of the 56 json / jsonc fences under skills/objectui/**/*.md are tagged json but contain // comments or ... elisions, so they do not parse as JSON: 12 in guides/schema-expressions.md, 4 in rules/protocol.md, 1 in rules/styling.md. They are legitimately unmarked for check-skill-examples.mjs (an os:check marker would fail them), so the new gate says nothing about them.

scripts/check-doc-fence-languages.mjs judges fence language tags but walks content/docs + package READMEs — it does not scan skills/, so nothing says so today.

Why it matters

A reader (or a future gate) that trusts the json tag parses the block and fails; a jsonc tag tells the truth and keeps the block eligible for a JSONC parse under the fence gate later. Same class as #7358 (the paths gate's scan root) and #7359: a surface every gate excludes by construction.

Claim: skills lane seat — graded and dispatched in one write (priority:p3 + pm:dispatched + domain:skills), 2026-09-03T07:40Z. Triage is vacant in objectui and this is the lane's own programme follow-up (from the #7359 / PR #7427 flight), so the seat grades it, as it did #7359. Value gate (#13597): a tag that lies to every reader and every future gate, on a surface no gate reaches — passes as a truth item.
    Session: session_01LraLgQVGq8egUwfYZpbYt1
    Branch: claude/issue-7462-jsonc-fence-tags
    Worktree: /home/user/objectui-issue-7462
Clause-②: no — fence tags carry no contract claim. Governed: skills/objectui/** ⇒ the PR stays DRAFT (ui#6866 批 #7); review requests are the seat's step.

Scope, exactly the card: re-count at claim (the 17 / 56 figure is from branch point 75e7436); retag json → jsonc only where the block carries a // comment or a ... elision (a fence that parses as JSON keeps json); no content edits; state the byte/token arithmetic (+1 byte per retagged fence); decide and say whether scripts/check-doc-fence-languages.mjs gains a skills/ root (its declared-file baseline is shrink-only and must not grow — if widening would grow it, do not widen and say why). Gates: node scripts/check-skill-examples.mjs (must stay green — the retagged fences remain unmarked), node scripts/check-doc-fence-languages.mjs, node scripts/check-skills-paths.mjs, node scripts/check-shell-escape-residue.mjs, node scripts/check-governed-queue-guard.mjs --test on the final path list, plus the union objectstack's scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs derives (it answers "absent from this tree" for objectui paths — report that verbatim, then run objectui's own scripts by name).

    Session: session_01LraLgQVGq8egUwfYZpbYt1
PR: #7473 (DRAFT, governed skills/**, no ready flip, no reviewers, no labels touched)
    Branch: claude/issue-7462-jsonc-fence-tags · head sha ec67429b2a984b27307b4d23345c9c094785e0d9 · branch point 0246d11
Status: done — premise still valid, and re-measured rather than trusted.

    Re-count at the branch point

skills/objectui/**/*.md holds 56 fences tagged json and 0 tagged jsonc.
    17 fail JSON.parse — the card's figure reproduced exactly, same per-file split:

file failing fence opener lines count
    guides/schema-expressions.md 32, 170, 206, 328, 355, 365, 374, 391, 447, 463, 479, 492 12
    rules/protocol.md 157, 166, 177, 187 4
    rules/styling.md 170 1

    What landed

16 retagged, not 17 — the one judgement call that changes the edit, called out
below. Tag-only, applied by line number after asserting each opener is exactly the
six bytes of the json info string. git diff -U0 filtered to changed lines is 16
removals of the json opener and 16 additions of the jsonc opener and nothing
    else; 3 files, 16 insertions, 16 deletions.

file bytes before after delta lines before after
    guides/schema-expressions.md 20653 20664 +11 518 518
    rules/protocol.md 13549 13553 +4 320 320
    rules/styling.md 10793 10794 +1 319 319

+1 byte per fence, +16 total, zero line-count change. Token ratchet: none exists
in this repository over skills/** — the only two budget scripts,
check-eager-closure-budget.mjs and render-budget-comment.mjs, measure the shipped
JavaScript closure, not markdown. So the arithmetic is reported because the card
asked, not because anything gates on it.

Measured with the repository's own parseJsonFence: after the retag, 39 of the 40
remaining json fences parse strictly and 7 of the 16 jsonc fences parse under the
    repo's JSONC dialect — 46 of 56, up from 39 of 56.

    Judgement calls

    1. The card's number and the card's criterion select different sets, and the gap is
      exactly one block.
"Carries a // comment or a ... elision" (the claim
      comment's wording) selects 16; "fails JSON.parse" selects 17. The
seventeenth is guides/schema-expressions.md:206 — two top-level JSON documents
listed in one fence, using no JSONC feature at all. I left it json, because
jsonc would be a different false claim rather than a truer one: its defect is
being a listing, not being a dialect. Every one of the 16 I did retag carries a
// comment, so the elision criterion added nothing separately. If the seat reads
the headline 17 as the scope instead, it is a one-byte follow-up on that line.
    2. check-doc-fence-languages.mjs does NOT gain a skills/ root. Measured, not
argued, in two ablation legs (mutation proven on disk by marker count and blob
hash before any verdict was read; restore proven byte-identical to the HEAD blob
with an empty git diff HEAD):
      • widened, the gate exits 1 on guides/project-setup.md:115 — a javascript
fence opening export default — which is UNKNOWN mode, and its header is
explicit that UNKNOWN "can never be baselined and fails on sight". So this is
stronger than the card's "would the baseline grow" test: the baseline could not
take it at any size. Zero SYNONYM findings, one UNKNOWN.
      • the gate's scan surface is pinned element-by-element to
        check-doc-snippet-types's by scripts/__tests__/check-doc-fence-languages.test.ts.
Under the mutation the lists are 243 versus 227 and the assertion is false, the
difference being exactly the 16 skills/objectui pages. Widening one gate is a
        three-gate surface move.
      • and check-doc-snippet-types.mjs already states, beside UNGATED_DOCS, that
skills/objectui/** is deliberately unclaimed and that pointing a doc gate at it
"is a decision for whoever owns that surface — never a side effect of a root
move". The four-axis argument is in the PR body; long-term soundness leads it.
      • consequently no self-test leg is owed (no gate changed). The reverse
verification that would have accompanied a widening was still run — it is what
makes "do not widen" a measurement.
    3. The tag is load-bearing, proven both directions. Throwaway probe on
rules/styling.md under a trap: opt one retagged fence into check-skill-examples
with the tag left jsonc and the gate exits 0 ("JSON phase: 40 fence(s)
parsed, 0 failed"); flip that same fence back to json with the marker still
there and it exits 1, naming skills/objectui/rules/styling.md:171 Expected double-quoted property name in JSON at position 50. Restored, hash back to the
HEAD blob, git diff HEAD empty.
    4. No changeset, by check-changeset-presence's own verdict, quoted in the PR
body. No needs:contract-review: a fence tag carries no contract or
operator-semantics claim. No labels touched at all, per the seat's instruction.

    Gates

All re-run at the final commit ec67429 with a clean tree; every exit code captured
by redirect before any pipe; verdict lines quoted in full in the PR body.

check-skill-examples 0 (after the build it needs — it exits 2, PRECONDITION NOT
    MET, unbuilt, which is not a verdict) · check-doc-fence-languages 0 ·
    check-skills-paths 0 · check-shell-escape-residue 0 · check-control-bytes
0 (plus a direct control-range scan of the three changed files: no hits) ·
    check-doc-links 0 · check-changeset-presence 0 ·
check-governed-queue-guard --test on the three final paths 3 = GOVERNED, the
correct verdict · vitest run over 8 scripts/__tests__ specs under the shared lock
    0 ("Test Files 8 passed (8) · Tests 347 passed (347)") · the turbo run build
closure the skill-examples gate names 0 ("Tasks: 29 successful, 29 total").
eslint over changed .mjs: nothing to run, the diff is three markdown files.

    objectstack's dispatch-gates.mjs --repo objectstack-ai/objectui exits 2,
verbatim: "dispatch-gates: REFUSING — asked for 'objectstack-ai/objectui', but this
checkout is 'objectstack-ai/objectstack'." and "this script exists only in
'objectstack-ai/objectstack', so a sister repo's list is hand-derived from its own
package manifest and its own workflow files." The union above was therefore
hand-derived from this repo's package.json and .github/workflows/, none of which
carry a paths filter for these gates.

Not measured: remote CI (reported at draft time by dispatch contract; the merge-queue
leg of the governed guard cannot run on a draft at all), and whether a widened trio of
doc gates would pass over skills/ — deliberately declined as out of scope.

Out-of-scope findings — recorded here, not filed by me

    1. guides/schema-expressions.md:206 — a json fence holding two top-level JSON
documents, no comment, no elision. No tag can make it honest; it needs a content
edit (two fences, or one array).
    2. Nine more fences still parse under no dialect after the retag — seven are the
      same multi-document listing shape (schema-expressions.md 32, 170, 447, 463, 479,
492; protocol.md 177), two carry ... elisions no JSON dialect accepts
(protocol.md 157, 166). With item 1 that is eleven blocks. Content edits, one
      coherent follow-up card.
    3. Seven retagged fences are now opt-in-able (schema-expressions.md 328, 355,
      365, 374, 391; protocol.md 187; styling.md 170) — adding the
check-skill-examples marker above each would move the corpus from 39 to 46
enforced JSON fences. Cheap coverage win, but a content edit, so out of this
      tag-only flight.
    4. guides/project-setup.md:115 — the single block that blocks any future
decision to point a doc gate at skills/. It is a real JavaScript postcss config
under a javascript fence, and it fails check-doc-fence-languages in the one
mode that gate never baselines. Worth recording now, because it is the whole cost
      of that surface decision.
    5. Card-text discrepancy (item 1 of the judgement calls): the card's Measured
section says the 17 "contain // comments or ... elisions", but one of the 17
contains neither. Worth a correction if the count is ever re-derived from that
      sentence.

MCP GitHub calls this run: 6.

ACCEPT — skills-lane seat (session session_01LraLgQVGq8egUwfYZpbYt1), reviewer of record, verified against GitHub and the branch fetched into the seat's objectui checkout, not the report (report comment 5522566624 witnessed by get_comments). 2026-09-03T08:12Z.

    • PR docs(skills): tag the 16 comment-carrying JSON fences jsonc #7473 exists, is DRAFT, head ec67429, 3 files, +16 −16, one commit; Fixes #7462; no reviewers were requested by the dev, no labels touched, no changeset (the presence gate's own verdict: none owed).
    • Diff re-read by the seat at 08:05Z: exactly 16 opener lines json → jsonc (guides/schema-expressions.md ×11, rules/protocol.md ×4, rules/styling.md ×1); no other changed line; every retagged fence carries a // comment (the seat's own walk over the 16 bodies found 0 without one); guides/schema-expressions.md:206 keeps json.
    • Premise correction accepted, and the seat's own filing corrected here: the card said the 17 parse-failing fences "carry // comments or ... elisions" — 16 do; the 17th (:206) is two top-level JSON documents in one fence with neither, so no tag makes it honest and jsonc would be a different false claim. The dev's judgement to leave it json and hand it to a content-edit follow-up is right; the seat's 17-by-parse-failure headline and the comment-or-elision criterion selected different sets, and the card should have said so.
    • The widening question answered by measurement, accepted: check-doc-fence-languages.mjs does NOT gain a skills/ root — widened, it reds on guides/project-setup.md:115 (a genuine javascript postcss config, UNKNOWN mode the gate never baselines) and its scan surface is pinned element-by-element to check-doc-snippet-types's (243 vs 227 under the mutation); check-doc-snippet-types.mjs's own UNGATED_DOCS note says pointing a doc gate at skills/objectui/** is the surface owner's decision. Long-term soundness leads: one surface decision, made once, by its owner. No self-test leg owed because no gate changed.
    • The tag is load-bearing, proven both ways (marker + jsonc → check-skill-examples exit 0; marker + json → exit 1 naming rules/styling.md:171), with on-disk proof of each mutation and a hash-proved restore; the dev also recorded a perl no-op it caught by that same proof.
    • CI at ec67429, read 08:11Z: every one of the 27 check runs success or skipped, including Skill Example Check (the gate that reads these files), Doc Fence Language Check, Skill Guide Path Check, Shell Escape Residue Scan, Governed Surface Queue Guard (draft — correct), Changeset Declaration, Doc Snippet Type Check (completed 08:10:53Z), all four Test shards, Lint, Type Check.
    • Follow-ups filed by the seat after dedup: [finding] After the jsonc retag (PR #7473), 11 JSON fences in skills/objectui/ still parse under no dialect (8 multi-document listings, 2 ... elisions, 1 kept json) and 7 now-parseable jsonc fences carry no os:check marker #7474 (the 11 blocks that parse under no dialect + the 7 retagged fences now eligible for the os:check marker — one content-edit flight). Recorded on the ledger, not carded: guides/project-setup.md:115 is the whole cost of any future decision to point a doc gate at skills/.
    • Governed skills/objectui/** ⇒ stays DRAFT; reviewers os-zhuang + hotlong requested at 08:12Z; human merge is the record. At MERGED the seat strips pm:dispatched (Fixes ⇒ the card closes).

"Repository-wide pnpm lint — NARROWED AND DECLARED, with all three pieces of evidence: population read from eslint's own config (root flat config extends tseslint.configs.recommended, not the type-checked variant, and languageOptions names no parserOptions.project or projectService, so no verdict depends on a TypeScript program); file count read from --format json (448 files judged in the changed package, 0 errors); invariance for untouched files follows from the absence of type-aware linting plus the diff adding no file to any other package.",
"The nine jsonc fences and one json fence in the corpus that still parse under no dialect — untouched by this increment, still the follow-up recorded on the card."

An org admin must connect the Claude GitHub App for this organization.' and gh is absent. Writes therefore went through MCP (4 calls). Bulk reads used the zero-quota channel instead: the public PR page's clipboard-copy raw-markdown payload, which is how the PR body was captured byte-exactly before the edit and read back after it.",

"NOT FILED, out of scope: the pull-request-level workflow's 'Decide whether this change needs a full run' step trims the suite for a docs-only diff, so a docs-only diff can be fully green on its PR checks and red in the merge queue's full run. That gap is the whole reason this PR was ejected twice with no signal on the PR itself; a card asking whether the trim should keep any suite that reads files under skills/ or content/docs at run time would close the class rather than this instance.",
"NOT FILED, platform measurement: a PATCH to a PR body strips a trailing bare '_Generated by [Claude Code](https://claude.ai/code)_' footer when the body already carries an earlier footer. Measured today by writing the body and reading the stored markdown back: the 15303-byte pre-existing prefix came back byte-identical (cmp clean) and the 57-byte trailing footer was gone. Not re-posted in a loop, per the standing rule; the session URL survives in the body prose and the comment carries the footer intact.",
"NOT FILED, brief-versus-tree mismatch: the brief named 'check-governed-queue-guard.mjs --test' as the self-test. In this tree --self-test is the self-test and --test takes a path list; both were run and both are in the gates table."
