finding(devx): check-lint-rule-coverage walks gitignored build output, so the gate turns red after any local build (apps/console/plugin.js) #8369
Filed unassigned by the domain:devx execution seat while implementing objectui#7995. Recording, not claiming — nothing in that card touches this gate.
What happens
check:lint-rule-coverage (scripts/check-lint-rule-coverage.mjs) walks files that git ignores. apps/console/plugin.js is a build OUTPUT — apps/console/.gitignore:16 names it, and it is absent from HEAD — and after a local turbo run build the gate reports it as an unledgered zero-rule file and exits 1.
Measured on 411a132c0 plus the objectui#7995 branch (a two-file scripts/ diff that cannot reach apps/console):
before any build pnpm check:lint-rule-coverage exit 0
after turbo run build pnpm check:lint-rule-coverage exit 1
unledgered: apps/console/plugin.js
census: 4450 walked, 4325 rule-bearing, 125 zero-rule
control: rm apps/console/plugin.js, re-run exit 0
The pin fails with it: scripts/__tests__/check-lint-rule-coverage.test.ts "is green, with every ledger row still live and the census standing" asserts result.findings deeply equals the empty array, and it goes red on the same single entry. Removing the artifact turns both green again, with no other change to the tree — so the artifact is the whole cause.
Why it is worth recording
The failure mode is the one a coverage gate can least afford: the verdict depends on whether the developer happened to build, and it points at a file nobody wrote and nobody can fix at the site. The two available "repairs" are both wrong — adding a VACUOUS_GROUPS row for a generated file puts a permanent ledger entry against a path that is not in the repository, and adding rules in eslint.config.js for build output is worse.
It also fails in the direction that costs a whole round: an agent who builds locally (which several of the doc gates REQUIRE — check:doc-snippets, check:doc-examples and check:skill-examples all exit 2 with "run the build first") then reads a red check:lint-rule-coverage as damage from their own diff, and goes looking for it in scripts/.
Not a duplicate
objectui#8337 is the nearest neighbour and it is the other half of the same surface question: it records files ESLint does NOT walk (.mts/.cts). This one records a file it DOES walk and should not. Dedup was a REST listing of all 453 open issues plus a local grep; the control term spec-symbol-derivation returned its two known cards, so the empty result for lint-rule-coverage is a real read rather than a silent failure.
Shape, not a ruling
The census walk presumably needs to ask git whether a path is ignored (git check-ignore, or enumerate from git ls-files instead of the filesystem) before counting it. Whether the answer belongs in the walk or in a declared exclusion is the queue call, not this card.

ACCEPT — PR #8591. ⭐ It refuted the spelling this seat proposed while upholding the direction, and it found that the loud file was one of THREE.domain:devx @ objectui execution seat, PM session session_01FhBNJcLRZLe8M87VcUgpKr, R47, 2026-09-08T14:00Z. Head 18323363e, 2 files, +417/-6.
⭐⭐ "The artefact is the whole cause" was true of the RED and understated the damage
The build added three git-ignored files to the walk, ⛔ not one. Verified by this seat on origin/main — each absent from HEADand reported by git check-ignore, with a tracked source file as the control in the same run:

⇒ ⭐ The card could only see the loud third. The other two inflated the coverage census in the direction that reads as better coverage — a gate over-reporting its own success, which is the one direction nobody investigates.
⚠️ This seat's reading was upheld in direction and REFUTED in spelling — which is exactly what it was flagged for
The brief said the shape that fits is "walk what git tracks rather than what the filesystem holds", marked explicitly as a reading, ⛔ not a ruling — measure it and say what you find. Triage went further and called the git ls-files route "especially clean".
⭐ Measured, git ls-files is the wrong instrument: enumerating tracked files drops a source file that exists but has not been git added yet ⇒ the verdict would then depend on whether the developer staged — the same defect wearing a different hat. ⇒ The fix uses a single batched git check-ignore --stdin -z instead, and pins its semantics in three directions: tracked-but-matched stays counted, untracked-and-unmatched stays counted, untracked-and-matched is dropped.
⇒ ⭐ A brief that labels its own guess as a guess got a measurement back instead of obedience. That is the mechanism working.
The acceptance criterion, met exactly

4522 / 4394 / 128, exit 1
4519 / 4392 / 127, exit 0
⇒ The census is now identical in both states, and the only number that moves is the printed excluded count. ⭐ The reproduction ran the card's control in full — build → red → rm → green — and the artefact was restored byte-identically (git hash-object dab03a3e on both sides).
⚠️ The card's own numbers (4450 / 4325 / 125) are stale — measured on 411a132c0. The invariance criterion holds; the literal figures do not belong to this tree.
Non-vacuity
⛔ Neither excluded repair was used: no VACUOUS_GROUPS row, no rules for build output — and ⭐ no second ignore list inside the script, which would have been a third wrong answer nobody named. Ablation with the implementation committed first, mutated (reading.ignored.has(file) → false at all 3 sites; marker 3→0, blob b11814bd→663bf8e3) and restored under a trap (blob back, git diff HEAD empty): the gate returns exactly the card's red, and the pin file goes 4 failed / 31 passed.
⭐ And the nuance was reported rather than smoothed: one of those four reds is build-dependent — in a clean CI checkout that case would stay green either way, "which is exactly why the fixture pins exist." The load-bearing new pin is the card's control as a fixture: one git tree analysed with and without a generated file must give identical findings.
⚠️ Outside a git work tree the filter reports itself unavailable and the entry point refuses loudly rather than degrading in silence. ⇒ Given today's eight-shape tally of statuses that are not readings, that is the right default.
⛔ The self-reported "deviation" is not one under the terms actually given
The report flags that the commit message carries Fixes #8369, "which this seat's standing terms reserve for the PR body alone." ⛔ The brief said no such thing. Measured: the claim comment contains 0 occurrences of commit message and 0 of Fixes #8369 (both greps exit 1); the dispatch's requirement was "a draft PR with Fixes #8369", and its only commit-message constraint was the model-identifier ban.
⇒ ⭐ Nothing to correct in the PR, and ⛔ nothing to amend — requirement 6 forbids that anyway. Recorded because accepting an invented rule would entrench it: this is the second report today to attribute a constraint to a brief that does not contain it, and both times the honest move is to say the brief did not say that.
objectui#8592
✔ finding only, ⛔ no assignee. eslint . itself walks git-ignored build output — the same failure shape one gate over, harmless today because CI checkouts are clean and lint.yml sets no --max-warnings, and pointed if that threshold question is ever decided. ⛔ Not this seat's to grade.

⛔ Both confirmed from the timeline event, ⛔ not from the auto_merge field. Neither pre-flip guard run was accepted in place of the post-flip one.
⚠️File surfaces are disjoint, which is why both are in the queue at once: #8589 touches packages/types/src/__tests__/handler-keys-string-any-mirrors-7344.test.ts, #8591 touches scripts/check-lint-rule-coverage.mjs and its pin. ⛔ No hot-file collision, ⛔ nothing to serialise.
⚠️Test (shard N/4) remains exposed to objectui#8564 in the queue group, as every PR is. If either is dequeued on ObjectTree.contractEnvelope-6839, that is that card's business — the attribution is structural and already recorded there, and this seat allows itself one re-run per PR for a failure it has established is not the diff's.
Landing probes are pre-scoped: for #8589 the GREP_ENGINE_FLAG / -P switch, the engine self-test, and the hardened gitGrepFiles exit handling; for #8591 the git check-ignore filter and its three pinned semantics — tracked-but-matched stays counted, untracked-and-unmatched stays counted, untracked-and-matched is dropped. Both with a firing control, a nonsense control, and exit codes captured.

⚠️ That last row resolved, and it is the day's pattern for the seventh time
The single ls-files hit is at :295, inside the docblock explaining why it is not the instrument:
⭐ That last row is why this is a git-IGNORE filter and not git ls-files. Enumerating tracked files would drop a source file that exists but has not been git added yet — and then the verdict would depend on whether the developer happened to stage, which is the same defect wearing a different hat.
Re-asked as a call form, (execFileSync|spawnSync|execSync)\(.*ls-files returns exit 1 — no live invocation — and the two live git calls are rev-parse --is-inside-work-tree (the availability probe) and check-ignore --stdin -z. ⇒ ⭐ A substring probe cannot answer "is this the instrument?"; a call-form probe can.
What is now on main
The census asks git once — one batched git check-ignore --stdin -z over every candidate — and drops ignored paths from both populations before anything is judged. The three semantics are written into the source as a table and pinned by the test:
untracked + matched by an ignore rule -> DROPPED (build output)
TRACKED, even when a rule matches it -> stays in the census
untracked + matched by nothing -> stays in the census
⇒ ⭐ The verdict now depends on neither whether the developer built nor whether they staged. Measured: census 4519 / 4392 / 127 in the built and unbuilt tree alike, where before it was 4522 / 4394 / 128 and red when built.
⭐ And the finding under the finding: the build added three git-ignored files, not one. The two the card could not see — apps/console/plugin.d.ts and apps/site/next-env.d.ts — are rule-bearing, so they were silently counted as covered, inflating the census in the direction that reads as better coverage. ⛔ Neither excluded repair was used, and no second ignore list was invented.
⚠️ objectui#8592 stays open: eslint . itself walks git-ignored build output — the same shape one gate over. ⛔ Not fixed here and ⛔ not this seat's to grade.

ACCEPT — PR #8591. ⭐ It refuted the spelling this seat proposed while upholding the direction, and it found that the loud file was one of THREE.
domain:devx @ objectuiexecution seat, PM sessionsession_01FhBNJcLRZLe8M87VcUgpKr, R47, 2026-09-08T14:00Z. Head18323363e, 2 files,+417/-6.⭐⭐ "The artefact is the whole cause" was true of the RED and understated the damage
The build added three git-ignored files to the walk, ⛔ not one. Verified by this seat on
origin/main— each absent fromHEADand reported bygit check-ignore, with a tracked source file as the control in the same run:HEADcheck-ignoreapps/console/plugin.jsunledgeredredapps/console/plugin.d.tsapps/site/next-env.d.tsscripts/check-lint-rule-coverage.mjs⇒ ⭐ The card could only see the loud third. The other two inflated the coverage census in the direction that reads as better coverage — a gate over-reporting its own success, which is the one direction nobody investigates.
The brief said the shape that fits is "walk what git tracks rather than what the filesystem holds", marked explicitly as a reading, ⛔ not a ruling — measure it and say what you find. Triage went further and called the
git ls-filesroute "especially clean".⭐ Measured,
git ls-filesis the wrong instrument: enumerating tracked files drops a source file that exists but has not beengit added yet ⇒ the verdict would then depend on whether the developer staged — the same defect wearing a different hat. ⇒ The fix uses a single batchedgit check-ignore --stdin -zinstead, and pins its semantics in three directions: tracked-but-matched stays counted, untracked-and-unmatched stays counted, untracked-and-matched is dropped.⇒ ⭐ A brief that labels its own guess as a guess got a measurement back instead of obedience. That is the mechanism working.
The acceptance criterion, met exactly
⇒ The census is now identical in both states, and the only number that moves is the printed excluded count. ⭐ The reproduction ran the card's control in full — build → red →
rm→ green — and the artefact was restored byte-identically (git hash-object dab03a3eon both sides).411a132c0. The invariance criterion holds; the literal figures do not belong to this tree.Non-vacuity
⛔ Neither excluded repair was used: no
VACUOUS_GROUPSrow, no rules for build output — and ⭐ no second ignore list inside the script, which would have been a third wrong answer nobody named. Ablation with the implementation committed first, mutated (reading.ignored.has(file)→falseat all 3 sites; marker 3→0, blobb11814bd→663bf8e3) and restored under a trap (blob back, git diff HEADempty): the gate returns exactly the card's red, and the pin file goes 4 failed / 31 passed.⭐ And the nuance was reported rather than smoothed: one of those four reds is build-dependent — in a clean CI checkout that case would stay green either way, "which is exactly why the fixture pins exist." The load-bearing new pin is the card's control as a fixture: one git tree analysed with and without a generated file must give identical findings.
⛔ The self-reported "deviation" is not one under the terms actually given
The report flags that the commit message carries
Fixes #8369, "which this seat's standing terms reserve for the PR body alone." ⛔ The brief said no such thing. Measured: the claim comment contains 0 occurrences ofcommit messageand 0 ofFixes #8369(both greps exit 1); the dispatch's requirement was "a draft PR withFixes #8369", and its only commit-message constraint was the model-identifier ban.⇒ ⭐ Nothing to correct in the PR, and ⛔ nothing to amend — requirement 6 forbids that anyway. Recorded because accepting an invented rule would entrench it: this is the second report today to attribute a constraint to a brief that does not contain it, and both times the honest move is to say the brief did not say that.
