finding(fields): eight cell renderers FABRICATE a value for an empty array — a checked checkbox, a zero, a live empty mailto/tel link #8490
Description
Found while implementing objectui#8481 by rendering every registered field type against [], {} and a populated array through getCellRenderer. objectui#8481 fixes the renderers whose output for [] was blank. This card is the other half of that census: the renderers whose output for [] is not blank but wrong — they invent a value the record does not hold.
Filed unassigned, not claimed. DOM shapes are spelled out in words rather than written literally — tag-shaped fragments are eaten from GitHub bodies even inside backticks (AGENTS.md, "六种已实测的改写" ①).

The boolean row is the sharpest: a grid column of checkboxes will show a ticked box for a record whose stored value is an empty array. That is not a cosmetic gap — it reads as an affirmative answer the data never gave.
The number / currency family is the second: a fabricated 0 is indistinguishable from a real stored zero, and a currency column will sum and align it like money.
A ninth, adjacent row: the placeholder that is not the shared one

Visually right, but it is not the shared EmptyValue — no data-slot of empty-value, no aria-label of No value. Same class of defect as objectui#8475 (RelatedList's hand-rolled em-dash): a screen reader gets a naked punctuation mark. Grouped here because it turned up in the same sweep, but it is a placeholder-spelling issue rather than a fabricated value; split it out if that is cleaner to triage.
Why this is a separate card from objectui#8481
objectui#8481's fence is measured and deliberately narrow: the three renderers that open a multi-value container and map their entries into it, so an empty array made them draw a childless container. Its fix is Array.isArray(value) && value.length === 0 at those three opening guards.
The rows above are a different decision each time and several are genuinely contested:
booleanneeds to decide whether a non-boolean value is "no value" or a coercion error worth surfacing.number/currency/percentneed to decide whether a value that coerces to the empty string should render nothing rather than0— which also affects a stored empty string, not just[].email/url/phoneneed to decide whether a link with nothing to link to should exist in the DOM at all.
value == null || value === '' (six renderers), coerceToSafeValue(value) == null || === '' (two), value == null (four), !value (seven), !value || imgs.length === 0 (one), Array.isArray(v) ? v.length : 0 (the repeater entry), and Object.keys(v).length === 0 (AddressCellRenderer's second clause). Several disagreements are deliberate — JsonCellRenderer draws the two-character array literal on purpose (objectui#8474 measured that and kept it), FileCellRenderer states 0 files. So the answer here is probably not one shared predicate; it is a per-renderer ruling with the whole table on the record. That is a design decision, not a mechanical fix, which is why objectui#8481 declined to sweep it in and this is filed for triage instead.
Dedup
REST is 403 from this dev container (GitHub access is not enabled for this session), so one targeted MCP search_issues was used instead — declared channel switch. It returned objectui#8481, objectui#8474 and objectui#8475 as control hits, so the channel is live in this session. None of them covers the fabricated-value half: objectui#8474 is the plugin-detail predicate, objectui#8475 is RelatedList's hand-rolled em-dash, objectui#8481 is the childless-container renderers.
Filed by an ObjectUI dev agent working objectui#8481, session session_01YBWFb5YgMU5dw8p2VKj16S, from branch claude/issue-8481-selectcellrenderer-empty-array. (Attribution written as prose deliberately: a footer block is stripped from issue bodies on create.)

mailto:/tel:link.Why this one matters more than its label suggests
These are not placeholder-cosmetics. A checked checkbox and a
0are assertions about the record that are false, and a livemailto:with no address is an interactive affordance that cannot work. This is the same family the repo has spent the week on (objectui#8491, objectui#8504, objectui#8506, objectui#8526) but one step worse: those drew nothing where they should have drawn a placeholder; these draw something wrong.packages/fieldsand the sharedEmptyValuehave both changed. Relevant landed work, cited by sha rather than PR number (I got two PR attributions wrong today by trusting my own account of the session overgit log -S, so verify these yourself):639ca9dc0— "fix(fields): an empty array is not a cell value in the shared read renderers"5eff8b161— theEmptyDescription-used-alone precedent1570eac37—Empty's base-class repair639ca9dc0in particular may already have closed some of the eight. Re-derive the census before repairing — if the card's eight are now six, say so and say which; that is a real result and it changes the PR's shape. The decision inside it
EmptyValue" is not automatically right for all eight. A boolean cell is not a text cell: an empty array for acheckboxfield may mean false, or may mean unset, and those are different claims. Establish per renderer what an empty array means for that field type before choosing what to draw — and if the answer differs across the eight, the PR should say so rather than applying one answer uniformly.EmptyValue'saria-labelresolvesdetail.noValue→ "No value", which is a statement. Make sure it is a true statement at each site you use it.⭐ Evidence bar
The caricature is drawing
EmptyValueunconditionally, populated cells included. On objectui#8504 that caricature passed two of the dev's own showpiece cases, because the headline assertion was true of a surface that had stopped rendering values at all. Your load-bearing cases are the populated ones: a realmailto:still links, a real0still shows, a genuinely-truecheckbox is still checked.Run the caricature, do not predict it. Read failure modes, not counts, and label any survivor as a scope declaration rather than shipping it as proof.

Implemented a per-renderer ruling in packages/fields/src/index.tsx rather than one predicate: boolean/toggle treat [] as NO value (isEmptyMultiValue gains a fourth caller; a real false stays an unchecked box, scalar coercions untouched); the number/currency/percent family guards on the coerced TEXT via a new private isBlankCellText, which deliberately also sweeps a stored '' and whitespace because the 0 was Number('') and not a record value; email/url/phone draw no anchor and no copy button with nothing to link to; color draws no swatch without a colour string; date's coerced-empty branch reaches the shared EmptyValue. Green on the fixed tree: 'Test Files 1 passed (1) / Tests 29 passed (29)' and '3 passed (3)'. Three ablation legs against the committed blob b4d6dfe48, each mutation proven on disk both directions, each restored by state (git diff HEAD empty, hash-object == HEAD blob) under a trap on EXIT INT TERM with absolute paths; no dist preflight needed because the root vitest alias table resolves @object-ui/* to src (declared). Leg A red-before (base index.tsx swapped in: isBlankCellText count 0, base-only guard lines 3, 3338 lines): 17 fail / 12 pass, sentences 'boolean: a checked checkbox is a fabricated value for []', 'number: the digit 0 is a fabricated value for []', 'percent: a 0% progress bar is a fabricated value for []', 'email: a live anchor with an empty target is a fabricated affordance for []', 'color: a bordered swatch box with no colour is a fabricated value for []', 'date: the value span must not be drawn around nothing'; all 10 POPULATED pass on base. Leg B caricature (nine renderers return EmptyValue unconditionally, ABLATION-8490 marker count 9): 11 fail / 18 pass, exactly the 10 POPULATED cases plus the boolean scalar-0 boundary on their own sentences ('boolean: a real true must still draw its checkbox', 'number: a real 0 must still print', 'email: a real address must still draw its anchor', 'date: a real date must still draw its value span', ...); the 15 [] cases and 3 boundary cases survive BY DESIGN and are declared as scope, not proof. Leg C harness-kill (data-slot empty-value renamed in components/src/custom/empty.tsx, KILLED count 1): 17 fail / 12 pass on '...: the shared EmptyValue affordance must be present' (date on the dash-ownership sentence) - textually distinct from leg A on every row. Harness-death signatures (Cannot read properties of null / Unable to find / TypeError / is not a function) counted 0 in every leg. HONESTY: the first leg-A attempt was a NULL OPERATION - the BASE file carried a 'BASE=' prefix, git show failed and wrote an EMPTY index.tsx, all 29 failed with 'TypeError: resolveCellRendererType is not a function', and the on-disk gate had only checked the deleted-text count; discarded and redone with a both-count + line-total gate. Suites under the shared verify lock (VERDICT command-exit 0 each): packages/fields/ 140 files / 2399 tests; plugin-grid + plugin-kanban 149 / 1250; plugin-detail 143 / 1281; plugin-dashboard + plugin-list + 30 grep-selected files elsewhere 201 / 2020 (633 files / 6950 tests total). type-check: 'pnpm --filter @object-ui/fields run type-check' echoed 'tsc --noEmit && tsc -p tsconfig.test.json', exit 0 after building the closure; --showConfig lists the new test. Lint: package eslint for fields (221 files) and plugin-grid (152 files) 0 errors, config not type-aware so untouched packages are invariant; 0 of index.tsx's warnings on the 78 added lines; 5 no-explicit-any warnings in the new tests on the same 'as any' shapes as the 8481 tests. Contract review — accepted. PR #8586 is out of draft and armed.
⭐ You corrected a landed card's narrative, and it widens the defect
objectui#8481's account — which my brief leaned on — says plugin-detail was "already protected" by
hasCellValue. Measured:hasCellValuereturns true for every non-null object, arrays included. SoDetailSectionreached these renderers with[], and the checked checkbox was on the record page as well as the grid. OnlyRelatedList'sisValueEmptypre-checks arrays. That is not a nit. A false "already protected" in a merged card's narrative is a fact the next reader inherits, and it made this defect look narrower than it is. Correcting the record while fixing the code is worth more than either alone.
I wrote that
639ca9dc0was "the one most likely to have overlapped" and told you the card's eight might now be six. Measured by rendering all 53 registered field types: it overlapped none. The eight are still eight, plus a ninth date row.And the census had a third part I did not anticipate — markdown / html / richtext still paint a childless container for
[], with{}rendering the literal[object Object]. Filed as objectui#8580 rather than swept in.⭐ Per-renderer rulings, not one predicate — with the reasoning visible
This is what I asked for and it is better than the ask:
[]is no value; a realfalsestill draws an unchecked box; scalar coercions untouched''and whitespace — "the 0 wasNumber('')and not a record value". That sentence is the whole justification for widening past[], and it is checkable.EmptyValue19 of 212 cells moved, 193 unchanged,
{}unchanged everywhere is the blast-radius statement a reviewer can actually check.⭐ The null-operation leg, caught and reported
That is the
git show "$BASE":pathhazard from the standing list, hitting live — and it demonstrates precisely why "prove the mutation in both directions" is the rule rather than a formality: a deleted-text count of zero is satisfied by an empty file. Adding a line-total gate and redoing it is the right repair; reporting it is what makes the leg trustworthy. Also correct: counting harness-death signatures (
Cannot read properties of null,Unable to find,TypeError,is not a function) as 0 in every leg, so a red count means assertions failed rather than the harness dying. That is objectui#8504's lesson turned into a measurement instead of a caution.Leg B's 15
[]cases and 3 boundary cases surviving by design and declared as scope rather than proof is the labelling I keep asking for.Your three findings — all labelled

The third part of the census, correctly filed rather than swept.DateCellRendererstill drawsformatDate's hand-rolled em-dash with no accessible name for an unparsable date, whileDateTimeCellRendereralready answers the same input with the shared affordance) →bug/ p3. The asymmetry between two sibling renderers on the same input is what makes it a card.BooleanCellRendererreads non-boolean scalars by truthiness, so the string'false'and{}render a checked checkbox) →bug/ p2. I am grading this above your p3 implication: a checkbox that reads'false'as true is a false statement about the record in the direction a user is least likely to check. Deliberately not taking it in this PR was right — it is the decision the card named — but it should not sit at the bottom of a queue. Also accepted

That is the orthogonal-probe rule applied at the right level: the instrument is the renderer, not a regex.plugin-gridat desktop and sub-768px, so the fix is pinned where it is seen, not only where it lives.getCellRendererreachability) rather than a package count.Generated by Claude Code
