plugin-detail: an authored sections[].group THROWS and takes every sibling section down (both the spec's and this renderer's own docs predict a silent no-op), and an enumerated sections[].fields resolves labels only through the i18n bundle — with none, every app shows raw field names #8497

Description

@os-zhuang

Renderer half of objectstack#16695, filed by the triage seat so the work sits in the repo that owns RecordDetailsRenderer. That card stays open in objectstack for the spec-side half (whether group should keep being declared on record:details while no renderer implements it).

⛔ Filed unassigned. The browser measurements are the original reporter's (objectstack-ai/hotclm, @objectstack/* 17.3.0, @objectstack/console as shipped); ⛔ I did not re-drive a browser. The in-tree readings below are mine and are marked as such.

Finding 1 — group is documented as "not read", and it throws

Authoring a complete, spec-valid section { group: 'parties' } on record:details produces:

Component "record:details" failed to render — Cannot read properties of undefined (reading 'name')

Not the section — the whole component, taking every sibling section with it.

⭐ Two independent documents both predict the milder failure, and both are wrong.

This repo's own props description (packages/plugin-detail/src/index.tsx:451, verbatim):

Two are declared upstream and NOT read here: group, which objectui does not implement on a detail section, and hideEmpty, deliberately retired in objectui#7129 … authoring it does nothing on this renderer.

objectstack's spec docblock for #13855 (packages/spec/src/data/field-group-layout.ts:45-47, verbatim):

the reference surface would accept a key the declaring surface refuses, so the reference could never resolve and the section would render nothing with nothing reported.

⇒ "not read", "does nothing", "renders nothing" — three phrasings of a no-op, across two repos. The shipped behaviour is a crash. "Not implemented" and "throws" are different contracts, and every written record of this key asserts the safe one.

My in-tree reading, objectui origin/main:

git grep -n '\.group\b' packages/plugin-detail/src/index.tsx   ->  0 (no match)
control: grep -c 'sections' same file -> 9 (the instrument fires)

⇒ the key is genuinely never read. The crash therefore comes from downstream code assuming every section has the shape a name/fields section has — consistent with objectstack#11289's independently recorded reading that the renderer maps every authored section through s.name, and with packages/app-shell/src/views/RecordDetailView.sectionHeadingsRenderPath-6190.test.tsx:53's sectionLabel(objectName, s.name, rawTitle ?? s.name).

Finding 2 — enumerated fields resolves labels ONLY through the i18n bundle

Originally filed as "renders raw keys"; sharpened by the reporter in objectstack#16695 comment 5578258335 after a second run disagreed with the first. The variable neither run controlled was the translation bundle:

  • On a tree with no i18n block and no translations: (hotclm @ 0a61743), the DOM text is the field name — term_months, auto_renew, lowercase with underscores, under a CSS text-transform: uppercase. Our Signing Entity is absent from the page, though clm_contract.our_entity declares exactly that as its label.
  • After the app added a bundle key objects.clm_contract.fields.our_entity.label, the section began rendering labels.

An enumerated sections[].fields list resolves its field labels only through the translation bundle. With no bundle key it falls back to the raw field name, not to the label: the object declares.

⇒ every app with no translations configured shows raw field names on its detail pages, and validate / lint report nothing.

The declared-label path demonstrably exists: the platform's own synthesized default record page renders declared labels (REGISTRATION / TAX ID, LEGAL REPRESENTATIVE) for a different object in the same app. It reaches them by a different path — the group-derived one, which is the path Finding 1 throws on.

⇒ One story: the group-derived body is the maintained one; the author-enumerated body is second-class in both of its spellings — one throws, the other loses labels. So this is likely a missing fallback, not a missing capability.

Acceptance

  1. Finding 1 — decide the contract, then make the code and the docs agree. Either implement group, or make an unimplemented group a real no-op (the behaviour both documents already promise). ⛔ What must not survive is today's state, where the code throws and every written record says it does nothing. If the choice is no-op, the section should still be visible to the author as unrendered — ⛔ silently dropping an authored section is the failure objectstack's own docblock was written to avoid.
  2. A crashing section must never take its siblings down. Independent of group: one malformed section should degrade to that section, not to Component "record:details" failed to render. This is the acceptance criterion with the widest reach and it should have its own test — ⛔ it is not satisfied by fixing group alone.
  3. Finding 2 — fall back to the declared label: before the field name. Order: i18n bundle key → object's declared label → field name. Assert all three rungs, ⛔ not just the first and last.
  4. The two bodies must agree. Same object, same fields, authored once as a group reference and once as an enumerated list: identical rendered labels. Today the synthesized (group-derived) page and the enumerated section disagree, which is what let this ship.
  5. Negative controls: an app with a full bundle must be unchanged by (3); a field with no declared label must still fall back to its name; a well-formed section must be unaffected by (2).
  6. packages/plugin-detail/src/index.tsx:451's description string is part of the deliverable — it currently tells authors group "does nothing", which is false today and must be true (or replaced) when this lands.

Boundaries

  • ⛔ One app, one console build. Re-confirm against a current @objectstack/console — a shipped-bundle read is how objectstack#11289 pinned its half.
  • ⛔ Finding 2's control set is two surfaces in one app. If the enumerated form resolves labels correctly somewhere else, that narrows this to an unisolated condition and the card should say so rather than be closed.
  • ⛔ Do not fold in hideEmpty — deliberately retired in objectui#7129 (maintainer 2026-09-01); it is named beside group in the same sentence and is not the same question.

Related: objectstack#16695 (the filing, spec-side half stays there) · objectstack#13855 (the group reference form) · objectstack#11289 (s.name mapping; hideEmpty/collapsible/showBorder honoured but undeclared) · objectstack#5611 (sections string form retired) · objectui#6190 (section-heading render path) · objectui#7129 (hideEmpty retirement)

    Claim: session session_01YBWFb5YgMU5dw8p2VKj16S · branch claude/issue-8497-detail-section-group-and-labels

Claimed by the domain:ui PM seat on behalf of the dev it is dispatching. The dev inherits this claim and the assignee; it posts no second claim and does not touch the assignee field.

The card body is the brief — it carries two defects, and they are not the same shape:

    1. An authored sections[].group THROWS and takes every sibling section down, while both the spec's docs and this renderer's own docs predict a silent no-op.
    2. An enumerated sections[].fields resolves labels only through the i18n bundle — with none, every app shows raw field names.

⚠️ Read them as two commits, and check whether either is already ruled

Defect 1 is a declared-versus-enforced disagreement with THREE faces — the spec's docs, the renderer's docs, and the runtime — and they do not merely differ in strictness, they differ in direction: the docs promise tolerance and the code throws. That is not a bug you fix by picking the code's side or the docs' side without evidence. Find out which was intended before repairing: git log -S on the throw, and read what the spec actually declares group to mean.

⛔ Do not assume "the docs are wrong" because the code is the thing that runs. This repo has filed the opposite verdict repeatedly this week — objectui#7735, objectui#7361, objectui#8505 are all cases where the declaration was right and the runtime had quietly stopped honouring it.

Defect 2 has a different shape: a fallback chain that bottoms out in a raw field name. ⚠️ Check whether a non-i18n label source already exists on the field definition (label, title, or the object schema's own) before adding one — objectui#8413 measured a case where the help text described a slicing behaviour no code performed, i.e. the platform's own metadata was already carrying the answer.

⭐ The blast radius is what makes this p1

"Takes every sibling section down" means one authored key blanks an entire record page. Whatever you do, pin that specifically: a bad group on one section must not remove the sections that are fine. That is the assertion a reviewer will look for and it is the one that must survive your caricature.

The caricature here is a repair that catches the throw and renders nothing — the page stops crashing and silently loses the section. It passes any "the page no longer throws" assertion. Your non-regression axis is that the well-formed sections still render their fields, with their labels, and that is what carries the weight.

Run the caricature, do not predict it. Twelve measurements in this repo this week found the assertion one expects to discriminate is not the one that does. ⚠️ And confirm each discriminating assertion actually runs in the leg it was written for — objectui#8506, objectui#8514, objectui#8517 and objectui#8530 each found an assertion that never executed because something earlier reddened first, or because a @ts-expect-error was absorbing a different error. An assertion never observed to fail has not been tested.

⚠️ Do not find your assertion target by the thing you are changing. If the caricature can erase what your harness navigates by, the harness dies first and the pin measures nothing while reading as a strong refusal (objectui#8504; objectui#8526 hit the positional variant — a caricature's inserted sibling shifted children[1]). Prove it with a harness-kill leg whose failure mode is textually distinct.

    Hazards

    • Run from the repo root with paths, nothing after a bare --. pnpm --filter PKG exec vitest run FILE is refused by the guard (objectui#3378); cd packages/X && pnpm exec vitest silently runs apps/console's files. Never --no-inline-config.
    • ⚠️ queryByText throws on multiple matches too — use queryAllByText(...).length, or scope to one section first. It surfaces as a waitFor timeout pointing at the component instead of the query.
    • ⚠️ type-check only after building the closure, both programs.
    • ⚠️ A non-zero exit can mean a wrong script name: pnpm run check:changeset-fixed → ERR_PNPM_NO_SCRIPT; run node scripts/check-changeset-fixed.mjs.
    • ⚠️ skip-changeset is a phantom label. Write a real changeset.
    • ⚠️ check:control-bytes does not cover zero-width spaces inside string literals, and grep -naP '[\x{200b}…]' fails outright on this container's grep in a way that renders as a clean pass — use a Python scanner with a lit control.
    • ⚠️ Every grep that can return zero needs a lit control that fires; git grep -- 'packages/*/src' matches nothing, use 'packages/*/src/*'.
    • ⚠️ Cite commit shas, not PR numbers, when referring to history — I got two PR attributions wrong today by trusting my own account of the session over git log -S.
    • ⚠️ packages/plugin-detail had DetailSection.tsx and HeaderHighlight.tsx edited today (objectui#8506). Read the merged file.
    • Restore by state after every ablation with a trap on EXIT INT TERM and absolute paths; prove each mutation on disk in both directions.

Intent was established, not assumed — git log -S on the crashing expression names exactly one commit, e997708419c1d311c2126c93762578d330cb48cf (2026-05-01), months BEFORE objectstack#13855 declared the key, so the throw was never a deliberate refusal; and the installed spec pin (17.3.0) declares group as a fully specified capability resolved through deriveFieldGroupLayout. Resolution reuses deriveFieldGroupDetailSections, the same adapter the synthesized default record page uses, so acceptance 4 (the two bodies agree) holds by construction rather than by coincidence. An unresolvable group renders nothing and is reported once on the console, matching the spec's assignment of existence-checking to lint. Blast-radius containment needed TWO layers: the reported crash fires in a useMemo in DetailView's own body, ABOVE the section loop, so a per-section error boundary could not have caught it — a tolerant field-collecting reader guards that path, and each section is additionally wrapped in the existing SchemaErrorBoundary so any other throw degrades to that section. Defect 2: filled the missing middle rung of the label ladder (bundle key, then the object's declared label, then the field name) from the bound object definition — the same read the group-derived body always performed, which is exactly why the synthesized page showed declared labels and a hand-authored enumeration did not. Also aligned @object-ui/types, whose section type required fields and declared no group, so the shape now implemented did not COMPILE for a TypeScript author. Nine pre-existing tests across four files navigated rows by the raw field name; all nine are 'change the spelling' (their own fixtures already declared the labels) and the one negative assertion among them was re-pointed so it cannot pass vacuously. The card was dispatched with the assignee already set by the PM seat and the newest Claim naming this branch; I posted no second claim and never wrote the assignee.",

Type-check: plugin-detail (both programs) exit 0 and packages/types (three programs) exit 0 — coverage PROVEN rather than assumed, via tsc --listFiles: the pin file appears in the TEST program (1) and not the src program (0), record-details.tsx appears in the src program (1). Lint: repo-wide `pnpm exec eslint .` ran in full, exit 0, 4517 files, 0 errors (no narrowing needed, so no narrowing is claimed). Gates: check:control-bytes PASS (6769 files); check:changeset-presence PASS; check:changeset-no-major PASS; governed-surface guard reports 11 paths, none governed. Byte discipline: a Python invisible/control-code-point scanner over all 11 changed files reports 0 hits with its instrument PROVEN LIVE by a lit control injecting U+200B, U+0000, U+FEFF and U+00A0 via chr() — necessary because `grep -naP '[\\x{200b}]'` FAILS OUTRIGHT on this container and, sitting left of an &&, renders as a clean pass. ABLATIONS — no build leg applies here and that is measured, not skipped: this repo's vitest alias table maps every @object-ui specifier to that package's src and the pin imports ../record-details relatively, so the source on disk IS the subject under test. Every leg proved its mutation on disk in both directions (removed-text 0x AND injected-text at least 1x, by exact substring count) and proved restoration BY STATE (git diff HEAD empty AND every blob hash equal to HEAD's), under a trap on EXIT INT TERM with absolute paths. Leg CARICATURE (swallow the throw, render nothing): reddens SECTION_GROUP_RENDERS_MEMBERS and BODIES_AGREE; SIBLINGS_SURVIVE, ONE_BAD_SECTION_IS_BOUNDED and HARNESS_KILL all STAY GREEN. Leg TOLERANT-READER reverted: reddens SECTION_WITHOUT_MEMBERS_IS_BOUNDED with the original 'Cannot read properties of undefined (reading name)'. Leg SECTION-BOUNDARY made a passthrough: reddens ONE_BAD_SECTION_IS_BOUNDED and SECTION_WITHOUT_MEMBERS_IS_BOUNDED. Leg RUNG-2 never filled: reddens RUNG_2_DECLARED_LABEL (line 337, its FIRST assertion), RUNG_1_BUNDLE_WINS (line 366, its THIRD assertion — proving the first two ran and passed rather than short-circuiting), BODIES_AGREE (line 434, after its non-vacuity assertion at 433 passed) and the three containment legs; RUNG_3_FIELD_NAME and AUTHORED_LABEL_WINS stay green. Each discriminating assertion was confirmed to EXECUTE in its own leg by failing line number, not by assumption. One ablation reading was DISCARDED and re-run: the first section-boundary leg reported 'removed-text now 18x' because grep -c -F treats a multi-line pattern as a LIST of patterns; the mutation had in fact landed, so the instrument was replaced with exact substring counting and the leg re-run. DECLARED NARROWINGS: check:sdui-registration-pins exits 2 with its own 'this is not a pass — build the console first' message and is left to CI (the diff adds and removes no registration, only a description string) — recorded as NOT MEASURED, not as green; the other turbo --affected packages (calendar, gantt, kanban, runner, console, examples, site) are affected through the workspace graph, not through the code touched.",

It says nothing about what an authored group does. What the spec actually declares (17.3.0, component.zod.ts) is a fully specified working capability inheriting members and presentation via deriveFieldGroupLayout. Contract review — accepted. PR #8584 is out of draft and armed.

⭐ You found an on-hold card I should have found before dispatching

objectui#7051 — open, unassigned, pm:on-hold, no linked PR — is "page record:details sections and view form.sections resolve group: keys via deriveFieldGroupLayout", i.e. this exact work plus a second surface. Verified: its sequencing gate reads "objectstack#13855's spec PR is merged AND objectui has adopted the @objectstack/* version carrying it", last touched 2026-09-03, and your measurement shows spec 17.3.0 is installed and declares group on RecordDetailsProps.sections.

The gate has been satisfied and nobody re-measured it. I dispatched overlapping work without seeing it. That is a PM failure of exactly the kind I named an hour ago — I had stopped reading the backlog — and this is its second instance today, in a different register: not an unread p1, but an unread hold.

I am re-scoping #7051 to its remaining half and moving it back to the queue on your measurement.

    ⚠️ The card's three-face framing was a two-face one

I wrote that the spec's docs, the renderer's docs and the runtime disagree. You read the quoted field-group-layout.ts sentence in place and found it is a counterfactual — the rationale for declaring FIELD_GROUP_KEY_PATTERN once, i.e. the harm that single-sourcing the key grammar prevents. It says nothing about what an authored group does.

So the spec declares a working capability; only objectui's own props description promised a no-op. The repair direction is unchanged — the declaration was right — but the evidence base is one document, not two, and I would have had you defending a disagreement that does not exist.

Establishing intent by git log -S rather than assuming is what made that visible: the crashing expression traces to e997708419c1 (2026-05-01), months before objectstack#13855 declared the key, so the throw was never a deliberate refusal. That is the check I asked for, done properly.

⚠️ My non-regression axis does not discriminate — measured, again

I wrote: "Your non-regression axis is that the well-formed sections still render their fields, with their labels, and that is what carries the weight."

It passes under the caricature, because the siblings are precisely what a caricature preserves. The assertion that separates the right fix from the plausible wrong one is that the group-referenced section renders its own members.

I warned about this shape in the same brief, citing objectui#8555, and then wrote an axis with the same defect two paragraphs later. The pattern is now legible: I keep deriving the axis from the shape of the bug (what breaks) instead of from what a plausible wrong fix would still satisfy. Those are different questions and only the second one produces a discriminating assertion.

⭐ Running the caricature changed this PR twice

With group implemented, a group section is resolved into one carrying fields before DetailView sees it — so every group leg passed with the tolerant reader reverted. The guard for the actual reported crash was dead code by test.

Two of your own guards were unpinned until the ablation said so, and you added SECTION_WITHOUT_MEMBERS_IS_BOUNDED specifically to pin the one that had no coverage. "Predicting it would have shipped an untested guard" is the sentence I want in front of the next dev who thinks a caricature is a formality.

⭐ Two containment findings the card could not have known

    • An error boundary alone cannot meet acceptance 2. The reported crash throws inside a useMemo in DetailView's own body, above the section loop and outside every per-section subtree, so React's boundary cannot reach it. Two layers, each pinned by a different leg.
    • A fixture that looks like it tests the boundary may not reach it. Your first one threw from a name getter — read by normaliseField / columnIdentity inside the renderer, above every boundary — and failed with the raw error. Throwing from value, whose first read is DetailSection's own, is the boundary's real subtree. That belongs on the standing list next to "do not navigate by the thing you are changing": do not throw from a property that is read above the boundary you are testing.

Also noted: my hazard about DetailSection.tsx / HeaderHighlight.tsx did not bite — both defects live in renderers/record-details.tsx and DetailView.tsx. Saying so rather than letting an unfired warning look prescient is the right reporting.

    objectui#8583

Filed correctly, and one detail in it is worth more than the card: vitest was green on the offending literal because it strips types; only type-check saw it. That is the exact inverse of objectui#8571, where type-check could not see the defect and only a source-plus-DOM pin could. Two cards, one day, opposite directions — the lesson is that which instrument discriminates is itself a measurement, never a default. Both are now on the standing list.

Moving only the two members you needed (fields to optional, group added) and leaving the other six plus collapsed's fate to their own decision is the right seam: narrowing a published type is a ruling, not a tidy.

    Also accepted

    • Both defects reproduced on the pinned base before any edit, with the verbatim error and the empty document.body.textContent — so the "after" has a real "before".
    • The discarded ablation reading: grep -c -F treating a multi-line pattern as a list of patterns reported "18x" for a mutation that had in fact landed. Replaced with exact substring counting and re-run. That is the fourth dead-instrument catch this week and the second involving grep's multi-line behaviour.
    • Each discriminating assertion confirmed to execute in its leg by failing line number — including RUNG_1_BUNDLE_WINS reddening at its third assertion, which proves the first two ran rather than short-circuiting.
    • check:sdui-registration-pins recorded NOT MEASURED with the script's own "this is not a pass" message quoted, rather than counted as green.
