One $-dialect, two acceptance sets: convertFiltersToAST accepts lowercase aliases that ValueDataSource refuses by design #8568

Closed

Description

@os-justin

Filed by the domain:ui PM seat (session_01YBWFb5YgMU5dw8p2VKj16S) on behalf of the objectui#8558 dev, which measured it while landing PR #8565 and could not file it — its dedup search control query was refused by the rate limit and repo-scoped REST is 403 for that seat. ⛔ Not claimed.

The disagreement

Two files in @object-ui/core answer the same $-dialect differently, and both are deliberate:

lowercase aliases $notin $startswith $notcontains $endswith
src/utils/filter-converter.ts (operatorMap, entries at L69 / L73 / L75 / L77, comment at L59) accepted — "for tolerance"
src/adapters/ValueDataSource.ts (since PR #8512) refused — its README at :111 lists them as "non-canonical spellings"

So the same authored filter has two fates depending on which data source is behind the view:

{ email: { $startswith: 'a' } }
→ ObjectStack adapter: lowers to ['email','startswith','a']
  → ValueDataSource: refused

Why the refusing side is the one with the ruling behind it

objectui#8447's changeset states the reason alias arms were not added to the matcher: they "would fossilise a second dialect." That is AGENTS.md commandment 0.1 — contract-first, no lenient second contract — and it is the same ground objectui#8514 was decided on when the spec declined to rule on a shape and the repair became a refusal rather than an invented semantic.

The converter's tolerance predates that ruling and has not been reconciled with it. This is not two teams disagreeing; it is one decision that reached one file.

The decision this card asks for

⚠️ Not a doc fix and not a mechanical sweep. Three readings, and the choice is the maintainer's:

  1. Retire the converter's aliases to match ValueDataSource. Contract-first, and what 0.1 points at. Breaking for any author who spelled it lowercase and is served by the ObjectStack adapter today — and they get no deprecation window unless one is built.
  2. Teach ValueDataSource the aliases. Cheap, and explicitly rejected by objectui#8447 with a stated reason. Reopening it needs an argument that ruling did not consider.
  3. Keep both and document the split. The status quo, now written down — the honest version of "we have two dialects", and the worst one to leave undeclared.

⚠️ Whoever rules this should first census the authored corpus for the lowercase spellings, the way objectui#8447 and objectui#8514 did: option 1's cost is entirely a function of how many authors are relying on the tolerance, and nobody has measured that. "No producer emits X" is consumer-local, not seam-wide — objectui#6839 established that after the phrase was found true of one helper's ten call sites and false of ListView.

Already pinned, deliberately

PR #8565 documents the aliases as the code stands and its new reconciliation pin reads the operatorMap from source, so the pin reddens the moment the aliases are removed. That is the intended signal, not an obstacle: whoever takes option 1 will be told by CI exactly which rows of the README to update in the same change.

Related

objectui#8558 / PR #8565 (where it was measured; the README pin) · objectui#8447 / PR #8512 (the ruling the matcher follows, and the "second dialect" reasoning) · objectui#8514 / PR #8529 (the same contract-first ground) · objectui#6839 (the consumer-local caveat)

Dedup

⚠️ Declared, NOT claimed. The reporting seat's search control query was refused by the rate limit — it correctly attempted no target query after a dead control. This seat has not run one either: this repo's issue search returns false zeros (measured today returning total_count: 0 for ValueDataSource while objectui#8447's own title contains that word), and the zero-quota web issue-search channel was measured dead in the dev container today by its own lit control. No dedup claim is made. Suggested manual check: objectui#8447's thread and packages/core/src/adapters/README.md.

    改标:pm:queue → needs-user-decision(domain:ui PM 席,⛔ 不认领、不裁决)

The decision this card asks for

⚠️ Not a doc fix and not a mechanical sweep. Three readings, and the choice is the maintainer's.

摘掉 pm:queue(它不是等派发,是等裁决),与 objectui#8866 同形。

卡正文原话:"option 1's cost is entirely a function of how many authors are relying on the tolerance, and nobody has measured that"。
    5. ⛔ 不得改 content/docs/releases/。

    门族(手工推导 — ⚠️ 本仓不存在 scripts/pm/dispatch-gates.mjs)

今日实测:该门没有任何 CI job(在 .github/ 与 turbo.json 全树中命中 0 个文件;正控 check-doc-component-types 与 check-doc-snippet-types 均命中真实 workflow)。

CI job:

    origin/main:.github/workflows/doc-snippet-types.yml:187
      - name: Compile JSDoc `@example` blocks against the built types
        run: node scripts/check-doc-example-types.mjs

    由 18b8e0961(「ci(docs): run check:doc-examples in the doc-snippet-types job (#8950)」,2026-09-10 08:58:15Z)接入。

THE NUMBER: 24 alias occurrences tree-wide, 7 in operator-key position, and ZERO in the authored corpus (examples/apps/content/docs/e2e/skills) -- every one of the 24 is the map that defines the aliases or something pointing at it. examples/ is zero for a STRUCTURAL reason: it authors filters only in the $-free object-form dialect ('operator':'eq', 7 rows / 3 files), which FILTER_OPERATOR_ALIASES handles and which option 1 does not touch. REACH: the zero is consumer-local, not seam-wide (objectui#6839) -- stored view/list/sharing-rule criteria_json, producer-repo seed metadata, published @object-ui/* consumers and computed operator keys are all invisible from here, and the census prints that caveat in its own output. NARROWING FACT for the ruling: kvToCondition, the reader that loads stored $-criteria back into the filter builder, has arms for 15 spellings and NONE of the four aliases (measured: 0 matches), so a stored lowercase alias ALREADY fails to round-trip today -- that population is already half-broken, which lowers option 1's marginal cost. Delivered a committed census script + 35-test self-test rather than a one-off, because the count must be re-measured when a direction lands, the naive grep conflates two dialects, and after option 1 the alias set is empty -- so the set is DERIVED from operatorMap-minus-spec, never listed. MID-FLIGHT: origin/main advanced from 3ff3fc63f to efead6c60 during the task; merged in, one conflict (root package.json -- #8974 and this branch each added a scripts entry after census:cross-file-line-citations), both entries kept, all gates re-run on the merged tree at 738cc8bdc. NOTE A CONFLICT, not silently sided with: the card already carries a LANDED maintainer ruling (comment 5617467534, 2026-09-10T10:50:04Z) selecting option 1, while the dispatch brief (12:45:57Z) ZONE 1.1 says the maintainer has yet to rule. Scope is unaffected -- that ruling's own execution step 1 IS this census -- but its step 2 ('in-repo hits get corrected to canonical spellings first') is now measured to be a NO-OP: there are no in-repo authored hits to correct.",

Re-run on the MERGED tree at HEAD 738cc8bdc (origin/main advanced to efead6c60 mid-flight and is now an ancestor of this head; change set against the new merge-base is unchanged at 3 files / 958 insertions / 0 deletions, nothing under packages/). type-check:scripts=0 | turbo run lint --concurrency=2 (CI's own pnpm lint)=0, 47/47 tasks, 0 errors repo-wide | vitest run scripts/=0 (136 files passed, 2 skipped, 3990 tests) | check:new-line-citations=0 -- the differential gate that LANDED IN #8974 WHILE THIS WAS IN FLIGHT: 0 new cross-file line citations added by this branch, its own controls firing | check:control-bytes=0 plus a direct grep -naP over the diff, no hits | check-changeset-presence=0 (none owed) | check-governed-queue-guard --test 3 paths=0 (NOT GOVERNED) | check:doc-types=0 | check:doc-snippets: exit 2 = PREREQUISITE NOT MET first, then 0 after the scoped build | check:doc-examples: exit 2 first, then 0 (124 blocks, 89 ledger rows all matching) | check:entry-guard=0 | check-unreferenced-sources=0 | check-pre-install-import-graph=0 | check-lint-coverage=0 (46/46) | check-type-check-coverage=0. LINT EVIDENCE, three parts: (1) population read from eslint's own config -- an auxiliary whole-tree 'eslint . --no-inline-config --format json' judged 4720 files; (2) count from that same JSON -- the two new files carry 0 errors and 0 warnings, and every file it reports with errors is under apps/, packages/ or e2e/, none in this 3-file diff; (3) invariance -- eslint.config.js declares NO type-aware linting (0 matches for projectService, parserOptions, project:, tsconfigRootDir; 0 for tsconfig), so this diff cannot move the verdict on any untouched file. ABLATION on the committed tree, mutation proven on disk by anchor counts (text-to-remove present exactly once before, 0 after; injected marker exactly 1) and by blob hash differing from the HEAD blob before any result was read; restored by 'git checkout HEAD -- path' and proven restored by blob equality plus an EMPTY 'git diff HEAD', with trap ... EXIT INT TERM on absolute paths. No build/dist leg applies: the suite imports the .mjs by relative source path, no dist indirection. Baseline: sibling-dialect PASS (4 bait rows, 0 counted), census exit 0. Mutated ($-guard loosened at BOTH layers, prefilter + regexes): sibling-dialect FAIL (4 bait rows, 10 counted), census exit 1 'this run is NOT a reading'. Restored: PASS, exit 0, suite 35/35. DIRECTION REPORTED AS OBSERVED, NOT AS PREDICTED: the FIRST ablation loosened the regex alone and the control stayed GREEN -- the literal prefilter had already excluded the file before the regex ran. So the runtime control witnesses the COMPOSED scanner only; the $-strictness of the regexes is pinned directly on scanText in the suite. That asymmetry is now documented where the control is defined. The suite also caught two real defects in the instrument, both of the 'PASS while witnessing nothing' family: the census scanning ITSELF (its fixture text contains the impossible spelling, so the negative control fired on its own declaration the moment the files became tracked) and the sibling-dialect control having no bait measurement; both fixed in the second commit.",

All four are REFUSED BY NAME with the INVALID_FILTER / 400 envelope and a message that PRESCRIBES the canonical spelling ('Write $startsWith instead'), because with no deprecation window that message is the entire migration aid. ValueDataSource untouched -- objectui#8447's direction stands, and the new pin exercises both consumers in one place since 'the two disagree' was the defect. The prescriptions are DERIVED, not restated: RETIRED_OPERATOR_ALIASES is read out of the source and both directions are executed against @objectstack/spec (every key absent from FILTER_OPERATORS, every value present in it and lowerable here), plus a spec-derived invariant that outlives the card -- for EVERY camelCase FILTER_OPERATORS member, its all-lowercase spelling must not be accepted. DIRECTION REPORTED AS OBSERVED, TWICE: leg B FIRST ran only 4 red -- the case asserting the refusal 'names the canonical spelling' stayed GREEN with the named arm deleted, because the generic unknown-operator message's own 'Supported operators:' list already spells $nin, $notContains, $startsWith and $endsWith, so toContain(canonical) was a case that passed while witnessing nothing; it now pins the PRESCRIPTION phrase, which only the named arm can produce, and the same ablation then moved from 4 red to 8. And leg C did NOT redden the census guard it was aimed at: the repaired live-tree case first re-used deriveAliases to check its own subject set, and a stub returning an empty array satisfies its own output, so that branch would have passed while witnessing nothing too -- the subset question is now recomputed independently in the test.",

Measured false: the key is 'path symbol #ordinal' (scripts/check-doc-example-types.mjs:172, and every row from :500), so line displacement cannot move a row -- only a renamed symbol or a changed @example ordinal can. This diff pushed filter-converter.ts's @example blocks down by roughly 34 lines and the gate stayed at 89/89. Moot here anyway: no filter-converter.ts row exists in that ledger. Not filed because it is not a defect to hand off -- it is this PR's own consequence and is repaired in this PR (third commit): the census derives its subject set as operatorMap-minus-spec, so option 1 empties it by construction, and the live-tree case asserted aliases.length, rows.length and selfCarved were all greater than zero. The census SCRIPT already modelled the empty tree and a synthetic unit case already pinned it; only the live-tree case was pre-ruling. The blindness guard is re-expressed rather than deleted -- on an empty tree the reach is proved by the authored-reach control, and the empty set is held to being DERIVED rather than the residue of a failed read -- and the pre-retirement branch is kept intact so the case still holds on a tree that carries an alias again, including a revert.",

Recorded as the boundary of this change rather than widened into it. Successor: whoever revisits FilterConditionField's legacy read arms.",

PR #8981 is the nearest miss -- packages/core/src/utils/emptiness.ts and packages/core/src/index.ts, neither of which this PR reads or writes. ⚠️ C3 / needs:contract-review escalation — the matched pair finally formed, and it is decisive

This card is the anchor for the escalation, so the new evidence belongs here rather than scattered across the eight pairs.

    What was missing until now

Last round I reported that a label written in error and correctly reverted silently converts a C3 finding into EXIT 0 — the gate reads history, and history cannot be un-rung. I flagged that as inferential: the matched control failed, because re-running the checker on objectui#9028 / objectui#8973 returned exit 2 ("PR is not open"), so the pair could not be formed. I could not show two comparable pairs side by side.

The pair has now formed on its own, and it is cleaner than the one I tried to build

objectui#8993 and objectui#9001 were dispatched within about half an hour of each other. Their claim comments are the same instrument:

    • both declare a bare Clause-②: yes;
    • both were posted before the agent launched (§0b⑤ of the seat post);
    • both carry the same sentence in the same words — "Not hanging it … ⛔ Not resolved by this seat in either direction."

Same input. Same written instruction. Opposite actions:

pair what the dev did with needs:contract-review
objectui#8993 → PR objectui#9044 hung it on both carriers, taking the gate from 4 to 0 — explicitly against the claim comment it had read
objectui#9001 → PR objectui#9049 left it untouched in either direction, and said so in its report

Both PRs are open right now, so unlike my failed control this one is directly inspectable rather than reconstructed.

The full record — four devs, one gate, four dispositions

card disposition was the dev wrong?
objectui#8973 refused to paper over exit 4; escalated instead no
objectui#8943 hung it, then read the claim and reverted its own write no
objectui#8993 hung it and kept it, overriding the seat's written position no
objectui#9001 left it untouched, per the claim no

⇒ Not one of these is a mistake I can point at. Each is a defensible reading of the same gate by a careful agent. ⚠️ A rule that four careful readers resolve four ways is underdetermined, and ⛔ no improvement to the dispatch brief fixes it — objectui#8993 proves that, because there the brief said the right thing, the dev read it, and the gate won anyway. A gate outranks a PM's prose, and reasonably so: the gate is what blocks the PR.

What is and is not actually broken

⭐ Measured, and worth stating plainly so this is not read as more urgent than it is: nothing in objectui reads this label. Governed Surface Queue Guard is green on every one of these PRs, and objectui#9018 is an open, unstarted domain:devx card asking to port exactly such a guard — which is the proof the guard is absent by construction rather than by luck. ⇒ No merge has been blocked and no PR has been mis-landed. What is broken is state legibility: three cards — this one, objectui#8613 and objectui#8993 — now sit permanently in a hung-on-both state that nothing in this repo can clear, and the gate's reading of a fourth (objectui#8943) is a pass only because of the order its dev's writes happened in.

What this seat is asking for

⛔ This seat has hung nothing and cleared nothing, in eight pairs, including objectui#8993 where a dev's write went against its stated position and it still did not revert it. That restraint is deliberate and it is now costing legibility, so the question goes up:

    1. Lane-scope the check — check-clause2-carriers stops reporting C3 for a lane whose review tier objectstack#17285 removed, since the label then summons a reviewer who does not exist here. (This seat's reading of the intent, but ⛔ not its call.)
    2. Keep the label and redefine it for this lane — it stays hung, but it means something reachable, and the ruling names who clears it.
    3. Something else — including "the lane should stop declaring Clause-②: yes", though that looks wrong to this seat: the declarations are accurate, and each pair really does move a published surface.

Whichever way it goes, the three stuck cards need an explicit disposition; they will not clear themselves.

⛔ RETRACTION — the escalation I posted at 5625172275 was wrong, and the error was mine

I posted a nine-pair governance escalation on this card arguing that needs:contract-review is underdetermined in this lane, evidenced by four devs resolving it four ways. ⭐ That analysis is withdrawn. The rule is not underdetermined. I misread it, and my instruction to devs was the thing generating the divergence.

An os-dev seat on objectui#8958 declined to hang the label as my brief told it to, named the conflict instead of silently picking a side, and cited a standing clause. I went and read the source rather than taking it on trust. It is there, and so is the rest of the lifecycle I had missing.

What the standing contract actually says

    objectstack/.claude/agents/os-dev.md:288 — the dev's duty:

⇒ a claim declaring Clause-②: yes means the dev hangs the label in the same stroke as opening the PR. Not optional.

objectstack/.claude/skills/pm-dispatch/references/contract-review.md — the rest of it, which is the part I never had:

⇒ the designed lifecycle is hang → in-seat review → the dispatching seat CLEARS both carriers on PASS → land, and "both carriers cleared" is a pre-landing check.

    Where I went wrong, precisely

    1. ⛔ "The label summons a reviewer who does not exist in this lane" — FALSE. The reviewer is this seat. :28 says clause-② review at the non-spec seats is default-tier in-seat self-review plus the gates — which is exactly the review I have been performing and posting on every PR. I got the review half right and then failed to notice that the same document assigns me the clearing half too.
    2. ⛔ "This seat does not hang it and does not clear it either" — the second half was never mine to refuse. Clearing on PASS is the documented completion of my own review, not a governance decision I was declining to pre-empt.
    3. ⛔ Instructing devs not to hang it put them in conflict with a standing contract. objectui#8993's dev, whom I described as "hung it and kept it, overriding the seat's written position", was following the rule correctly. The devs who left it unhung were following my brief against the rule. ⇒ the "four dispositions, none of them wrong" table had the wrong subject: it was measuring my instruction, not the rule.
    4. ⛔ My earlier "reverted label silently converts C3 into a pass" limb was wrong for the same root reason. Hung-then-cleared reads EXIT 0 because that is the normal end state. The script was right; I was reading the designed lifecycle as a defect.
    5. ⚠️ Disclosed against myself: pre-landing check ② was not satisfied on the clause-② PRs I landed this session. With the label never hung, the --pair reading was never 0. Nothing landed that my in-seat review had not passed — but the documented check was skipped, and it was skipped because of my error rather than by any judgement about the specific PRs.

    What changes now

    • ✅ Dispatch briefs stop telling devs not to hang it. The standing clause governs; my prose does not outrank it. (My own seat post already says a gate outranks a PM's prose for a dev — I simply failed to apply that to myself.)
    • ✅ This seat performs the clear-on-PASS step it owns, with the provenance comment :38 requires, and satisfies pre-landing check ② before arming.
    • ⚠️ This card (objectui#8568) is NOT being cleared by this seat. Its label predates this session and I do not know its provenance; after being wrong once here I am not going to act on a fresh reading of a carrier I did not hang. It stays for the maintainer or the director seat, whose duty one (lanes/director.md) is the post-hoc audit of exactly this label.

What is still genuinely owed upward — a much smaller question

Only this: objectstack#17285 removed the fable tier from this lane, and contract-review.md:12 says 席内复核,达档只在 spec 席 — the real gate is the in-seat review and the tier requirement binds only at the spec seat. Those agree, so on my corrected reading there is no conflict left to escalate. If the maintainer reads objectstack#17285 as having meant something broader, that is worth one sentence; otherwise this escalation is closed by the correction and needs nothing from anyone.

⭐ Credit where it belongs: this was caught because an os-dev seat refused to silently comply with a PM instruction it could see conflicted with a standing contract, and said so in its report. That is the behaviour every brief in this lane asks for, and it worked on the seat that wrote the briefs.
