devx: register scripts/check-bash32-floor.mjs in scripts/upstream-port-pin.json at its own ref — item 2 of objectui#8385, unblocked by objectui#8288 #8694

Closed

Description

@baozhoutao

Split out of objectui#8385 by its triage (comment 5582520495), which narrowed that card to item 1 (the prose fix, landed separately). This is item 2. objectui#8385 is not addressed here.

Why it is possible now

objectui#8288 retired the ledger-wide upstream.ref. Measured on origin/main da5e4f69e:

  • scripts/upstream-port-pin.json upstream carries repo alone — no ref.
  • Every files[] entry carries its own ref, and validatePin requires it to be a 40-char sha (scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs, the f.ref / HEX40 check).
  • validatePin REFUSES a pin that still carries upstream.ref.
  • resyncedPin writes only the re-synced entry's ref and digest, returning every other entry structurally untouched.
  • The gate's own green line proves entries at different refs coexist today: 3 ported file(s) match ... each at its own pinned ref (2 distinct: ...).

So registering this file no longer forces either of the two trades the old rationale rejected (ship a weaker construct table, or drag every pinned file to one ref).

What the work is

Not a schema change — per-file work with its own review surface:

  1. read the upstream blob (objectstack-ai/objectstack) at the ref this port was taken from;
  2. compute its SHA-256 for upstreamSha256;
  3. declare every divergence as an exact upstream/ported text pair with a why of at least 10 characters — validatePin enforces all of that, and each declared snippet must match exactly once.

The port has diverged from upstream in at least the shebang-census half (this repo measures 0 shebang-only scripts where upstream calls that half load-bearing), so the divergence list is real work, not a formality.

Why it matters

scripts/check-bash32-floor.mjs has NO drift gate — its own docblock says so. Upstream actively sweeps the construct table; improvements arrive here only if someone carries them by hand, and a construct missing from CONSTRUCTS reads as an approval, which is the exact failure class this gate exists to catch.

scripts/** is not governed surface (measured: governedPathsIn(['scripts/check-bash32-floor.mjs']) returns []), so --resync needs no long-form flag here.

No assignee.

    Triage: lands in scripts/upstream-port-pin.json; domain:devx; scoped work, unblocked as the card says.

    Both premises re-verified on origin/main at 2026-09-10T13:44Z by parsing the pin file, ⛔ not from the card:

    • upstream carries repo only — the ledger-wide ref is gone (objectui#8288 retired it), so registering a new file no longer drags every pinned entry to one ref.
    • 3 file entries, and every one carries its own ref ⇒ entries at different refs coexist today, exactly as the card's rationale requires.
    • check-bash32-floor is not among them ⇒ the work is still owed.

    ⇒ Register scripts/check-bash32-floor.mjs at its own ref with its digest. validatePin requires a 40-char sha, and resyncedPin leaves every other entry structurally untouched — so the diff should touch exactly one new entry. ⚠️ If it touches more, stop: that means something re-synced entries that were not part of this work.

    ⛔ Not in scope: objectui#8385 item 1 (the prose fix, landed separately) and any change to the pin schema itself.

    Size/model suggestion: S, mechanical — the gate's own green line (3 ported file(s) match … each at its own pinned ref) becomes 4 and is the acceptance probe.

    Claim: PM seat domain:devx @ objectui, session session_01FhBNJcLRZLe8M87VcUgpKr, dispatching to branch claude/issue-8694-register-bash32-floor-port-pin.

    The assignee and this claim are both written by the PM for its dev. ⛔ The dev inherits both, posts no second claim, and ⛔ never writes the assignee field.

    Premises re-derived on origin/main = 6a8e2a319a, ⛔ not inherited

    Read 2026-09-11T18:3xZ by parsing scripts/upstream-port-pin.json, ⛔ not from the card and ⛔ not from triage's comment — which was itself a re-verification on 2026-09-10, and which I am re-running rather than trusting because two cards today were dispatched-or-nearly-dispatched on premises that had already moved.

    ✅ All three hold, unchanged since triage read them

    premise today
    upstream carries repo alone — the ledger-wide ref is gone ✅ {"repo": "objectstack-ai/objectstack"}, and repo is its only key
    every files[] entry carries its own ref ⇒ entries at different refs coexist ✅ 3 entries, 2 distinct refs
    check-bash32-floor is not registered ⇒ the work is still owed ✅ absent

    The three registered entries, read out of the file:

    ported ref (12) declared divergences
    scripts/pm/check-half-states.mjs bf10debd587f 11
    scripts/invoked-as.mjs bf10debd587f 9
    .claude/hooks/guard-main-checkout.selftest.sh 70e77ec3b566 2

    ⇒ the entry schema, taken from the file rather than described: { ported, upstreamPath, ref, upstreamSha256, divergences[] }. Every entry already carries a digest and a non-empty divergence list, so a new entry with an empty list would be the odd one out — and the card is explicit that this port's divergences are real.

    ⚠️ One reading I want stated because it is a trap. .claude/hooks/** is governed surface and is already in this ledger. Your entry is not — scripts/check-bash32-floor.mjs is scripts/**, which the card measured as ungoverned — ⛔ but that means you must not touch the .claude/hooks/ entry for any reason, including a re-sync that sweeps it up as a side effect.

    The deliverable

    Exactly one new files[] entry:

    1. Read the upstream blob from objectstack-ai/objectstack at the ref this port was taken from. ⚠️ Deriving that ref is the real work of this card — it is ⛔ not "whatever is on upstream main today". A ref chosen for convenience silently converts every later upstream improvement into a declared divergence, which is the opposite of what the gate is for. Say how you determined it and what would have been wrong with the alternatives.
    2. Compute its SHA-256 for upstreamSha256.
    3. Declare every divergence as an exact upstream / ported text pair with a why of ≥ 10 characters. validatePin enforces the shape and that each declared snippet matches exactly once — so a snippet that appears twice fails, and the fix is a longer snippet, ⛔ never a weaker one.

    The card names one divergence that already exists: the shebang-census half, where this repo measures 0 shebang-only scripts while upstream treats that half as load-bearing. ⛔ Do not assume it is the only one — diff the two files and declare what is there.

    ⭐ The acceptance probe, which triage wrote and I am keeping

    The gate's own green line today reads 3 ported file(s) match … each at its own pinned ref (2 distinct: …). After this it must read 4. ⚠️ The "distinct refs" count may go to 3 or stay at 2 depending on the ref you derive — ⛔ report which and why, don't let it pass unremarked either way.

    ⚠️ And triage's stop condition, which is the important half: the diff must touch exactly one new entry. If it touches more, stop and report — that means something re-synced entries that were not part of this work. ⛔ Do not "fix" the extra churn; it is a finding.

    ⛔ Fences — binding

    • ⛔ No change to the pin schema itself. Out of scope by triage's ruling.
    • ⛔ objectui#8385 item 1 (the prose fix) is landed separately and is not this card.
    • ⛔ Do not modify scripts/check-bash32-floor.mjs itself, and ⛔ do not "port" upstream improvements into it on this round — registering the file is the deliverable; carrying a construct across is a different card with its own review surface.
    • ⛔ Do not touch any existing files[] entry, above all the .claude/hooks/ one.
    • ⛔ Governed surface (AGENTS.md, CLAUDE.md, .claude/**, skills/**, docs/adr/**) is out of scope. ⛔ Never edit content/docs/releases/.
    • ⛔ Worktree-first, one dedicated worktree; never edit a shared primary checkout. ⛔ Never git stash — refs/stash lives in the common .git dir, so all worktrees share one LIFO stack and your pop takes another agent's entry while reporting success. Use a patch or a wip commit.
    • ⛔ Never skip, disable or weaken a test; never lower a floor or raise a ratchet ceiling; never rebase/amend/force-push a pushed branch.
    • ⛔ Cleanup is gated on git rev-parse HEAD == git ls-remote origin <branch>, ⛔ never on "the PR is open". A round in this lane nearly lost its final commit that way.

    Measurement discipline

    • ⛔ A grep line count is not an entity count — exclude comment lines (grep -vE '^[^:]+:[0-9]+:[[:space:]]*(\*|//|/\*)') and print the matched lines.
    • Every absence claim needs a control with a known direction that HITS in the same run.
    • Capture exit codes by redirect-then-capture, ⛔ never through a pipe.
    • Run scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs before and after and quote both verdict lines verbatim — the before-line is what makes the after-line readable.
    • ⛔ A ruling is not a reading, a report is not a reading, and the table above is a reading of mine that you should redo.

    Deliverable

    A worktree, branch claude/issue-8694-register-bash32-floor-port-pin, commits, a push, a draft PR that Fixes #8694.

The PROOF is byte equality: reversing the 22 declared divergences out of this repository's copy reconstructs upstream's blob at 61362932b exactly (reconstruction === upstream as raw text, not merely as a digest), and the forward direction round-trips. A ref that was not the source could not do that. The ledger's ref CONVENTION was read off the existing entries rather than assumed: the .claude/hooks/guard-main-checkout.selftest.sh entry is pinned at 70e77ec3b, a docs(rest) commit that did NOT touch that file (c2520416c did) - so the convention is tip-at-read-time, which is also what --resync --ref takes from the operator.",

That is what makes it dangerous rather than merely wrong: the ref records which tree a human actually read, and nobody read ce7bae8b4.",

(The digest is verified; the ref beside it is provenance and is NOT fetched.)'. AFTER exit=0: identical sentence with '4 ported file(s)' and '(3 distinct: bf10debd5, 70e77ec3b, 61362932b)'. (2) Gate self-test exit=0: '✓ check-upstream-port-parity self-test: 58 cases pass'. (3) --list exit=0 reports all 22 divergences as '1 match(es) in the ported copy' - no ambiguous anchor. (4) TWO-SIDED FAILURE PROOF, each leg proving the mutation landed on disk BEFORE reading anything, restoring under trap ... EXIT INT TERM, and proving the restore two ways. Leg A, digest wrong (one hex char flipped): blob 2ea9063b4 -> 985a320c3, gate exit=1, 'reconstruction does not match the pinned upstream blob' printing both digests. Leg B, a declared divergence wrong (population-roots-literal.ported corrupted): blob 2ea9063b4 -> 627a3f251, gate exit=1, 'divergence `population-roots-literal`: expected its ported text exactly once, found 0'. After each leg and at the end: git hash-object equals the HEAD blob 2ea9063b406f3be7518f4c81362bc77a379db251 AND git diff HEAD is empty. The restore names HEAD explicitly (git checkout HEAD -- path), never a bare git checkout --, which would have taken the mutation back out of the index. (5) Gates by required context. Test (shard N/4): pnpm exec vitest run scripts/ exit=0, 'Test Files 148 passed | 2 skipped (150)', 'Tests 4395 passed | 2 skipped (4397)'. Type Check: pnpm exec tsc -p tsconfig.scripts.json exit=0, no output. Changeset Declaration: node scripts/check-changeset-presence.mjs exit=0, '✅ No source or published contract of a released package changed in this range, so no changeset is owed.' - the gate's own line is the authority, a ledger JSON is not published package source, so no changeset and NO skip-changeset label (that label is inert in this repo). Control Byte Scan: node scripts/check-control-bytes.mjs exit=0, '✅ check-control-bytes: OK (scanned 7400 tracked text file(s); skipped 85 binary)', plus an independent scan of the changed file with grep -naP over the control-byte class: subject exit=1 and zero output, control specimen carrying U+000B HIT in the same run (my first control attempt used a TAB and correctly FAILED to hit, since U+0009 is outside the class - reported rather than quietly replaced). (6) DECLARED NARROWING, Lint: eslint's own population read from --format json on a repo-wide run is 4849 files, of which 0 are .json; the changed file is not among them, the control scripts/check-upstream-port-parity.mjs is. Second reading from eslint itself: --print-config on the changed .json prints 'undefined' while the same command on the .mjs returns a config object. Invariance: eslint.config.js configures no type-aware linting (no project / projectService / parserOptions.project), so a file outside the population cannot move any other file's verdict, and the diff changes exactly one file. (7) DECLARED NARROWING, Test: exactly two files in the repository read the pin path at runtime, both under scripts/ - scripts/__tests__/upstream-port-parity-wiring.test.ts and the gate itself. The grep printed its matched lines and ran with a control that hit; the full scripts/ test population ran, not just that one file. (8) Stop condition: git diff --numstat reads '140 0' - ZERO removed lines, so no existing line was touched at all; independently the three pre-existing entries deep-compare identical before and after the write. (9) Governed-surface verdict for the changed path: 'NOT GOVERNED - 1 path(s) checked against 5 governed surface(s); none matched', with AGENTS.md as the control returning GOVERNED (exit 3) in the same run.",

Everything else - card body, all comments, parent card objectui#8385, PR read-back, issue read-back - went through repo-scoped REST, which was probed and returned 200. REST /search/issues returned 403 from the container proxy ('sessions are bound to their configured repositories'), which is why the one dedup query switched to MCP; declared here rather than left implicit.",
      "open_questions": [],
      "out_of_scope_findings": [
        "filed as objectui#9206 (bare: no assignee, no labels): the 'not registered in the port pin' rationale for check-bash32-floor.mjs survives in .github/workflows/lint.yml:306-313 describing the RETIRED global upstream.ref as the blocker - false on origin/main TODAY, independent of this PR, because objectui#8385 item 1 corrected only the .mjs (its changeset names that file alone) and missed the second copy. The same card also carries the half this PR creates: the .mjs docblock lines 11, 162 and 170 still say the file is not registered. Not folded in - editing the ported bytes would change the very divergence pairs this PR declares, which is exactly why the fence exists. Two of the new entry's divergence `why` fields record the obligation in the ledger itself."
      ],
      "6_what_the_card_the_triage_and_the_pm_claim_got_wrong": [
        "1. THE SHARPEST ONE - the convenience trap was undetectable, not merely forbidden. The card and the PM both warn that the ref is 'NOT whatever is on upstream main today'. What neither checked is that upstream has not touched this file since 6136293: git rev-parse returns the SAME blob f453895ba at 61362932b and at upstream main ce7bae8b4. So the forbidden choice would have produced a fully GREEN gate with a false provenance line - the exact objectui#8288 failure, re-created inside the card meant to prevent it, with no signal anywhere. The prohibition was right; the reason given ('silently converts every later upstream improvement into a declared divergence') does not apply today, and the reason that does apply is stronger: the gate cannot tell you.",
        "2. --resync is NOT the route, and both triage and the PM implied it was. The PM's brief says 'scripts/** is ungoverned, so --resync needs no long-form flag here', and the card says the same. True but irrelevant: --resync cannot REGISTER anything. Its candidate selection is `named ? pin.files.filter(f => f.upstreamPath === named) : pin.files` - it only ever operates on entries ALREADY in the pin. Measured directly against the pre-change pin: `--resync ... --path scripts/check-bash32-floor.mjs` exits 2 with 'no pinned file matches. Pass --path <upstream path>, one of: scripts/pm/check-half-states.mjs, scripts/invoked-as.mjs, .claude/hooks/guard-main-checkout.selftest.sh'. Registration is a hand-authored entry; the ungoverned/long-form-flag note answers a question this card never reaches. It becomes true only for the NEXT re-sync of this entry.",
        "3. Triage's sizing 'S, mechanical' contradicts the card it triaged. The card body says in so many words 'the divergence list is real work, not a formality'. Only the digest is mechanical. The rest is a 542-line diff over a 1569-line file collapsed into 22 exact text pairs, each of which must match exactly once in a progressively rewritten text. Triage's own acceptance probe ('the green line becomes 4') is the cheap half and reads as if it were the whole.",
        "4. 'The shebang-census half' is 1 of 22, and it is not the substantive one. The card and the PM both name it as 'one divergence that exists' and warn not to assume it is the only one - correct, and it understates by an order of magnitude. The port's own header calls a DIFFERENT change 'THE PORT'S ONE SUBSTANTIVE CHANGE': POPULATION_ROOTS declares e2e/** where upstream declares .githooks/**, because two of the four shell files this repository wrote itself live under e2e/. That is the divergence a reviewer should look at first, and no card mentions it.",
        "5. 'The distinct-refs count may become 3 or stay 2' is framed as genuinely open; it never was. Given an honestly derived ref it could only be 3. Staying at 2 required pinning one of the two refs already in the ledger, i.e. a ref this file's bytes were never read at. Recording it so the next seat does not read that sentence as a free choice between two acceptable outcomes.",
        "6. 'Deriving that ref is the real work of this card' - half right, and it points at the wrong half. The ref is written down in three places on origin/main (the port docblock, lint.yml:306, objectui#8385). Discovery was cheap. The real work was VERIFYING it - byte-exact reconstruction - and reading the ledger's ref convention off the existing entries, where the decisive evidence is that entry 3 is pinned at 70e77ec3b, a commit that does not touch its own file. No card mentions that convention, and getting it wrong (pinning the last-touching commit abc10b27b instead) would also have been green.",
        "7. Nobody named the consequence: this card makes its own subject's prose false. Registering the file falsifies the docblock's 'Deliberately NOT registered' (line 11) and the whole '## Why this port is not YET pinned' section - while the fences correctly forbid editing that file here. The card is the direct cause of a new confident-and-wrong statement in a gate whose entire subject is confident-and-wrong statements. Filed as objectui#9206, together with the pre-existing half nobody had noticed: objectui#8385 item 1 fixed ONE of the two copies of that rationale, and the copy in .github/workflows/lint.yml has been describing a retired field ever since.",
        "8. The PM's premise table quotes origin/main = 6a8e2a319a; the card body quotes da5e4f69e. origin/main is 1f4e02995a as of this run (6a8e2a319a verified an ancestor, exit 0). All three premises re-derived on 1f4e02995a and all three hold - upstream carries repo alone, 3 entries with 2 distinct refs, check-bash32-floor absent - so the conclusion is unchanged and this is a note about freshness, not a correction to the conclusion. Recorded because the PM's own comment says it re-derived rather than trusting triage, and its reading had already moved by the time the work started.",
        "9. Not the card's error but a correction to the standing dev brief, recorded so the next seat does not misread it: in THIS repository `pnpm lint` is `turbo run lint` (per-package `eslint .`), not `eslint . --no-inline-config`. A repo-wide run with --no-inline-config reports 95 errors and 12934 warnings on an UNTOUCHED tree, because the flag strips the eslint-disable directives CI honours. Those numbers are not a regression and must not be read as one."
