Studio flow status must render "disabled by deployment policy" distinctly from a binding failure (follows objectstack#17396 ruling G) #9217
Follows objectstack-ai/objectstack#17396's ruling G (2026-09-12): time-triggered flows (schedule, timeRelative) are gated by a deployment-level switch whose global default is OFF. When off, the automation engine will report every such flow as not bound with a DISTINCT reason — disabled by deployment policy — separate from a binding failure.
packages/app-shell/src/views/setup/packagedFlows.ts reads the engine's flow runtime states (bound: false today reads as a problem). Once the platform carries the policy reason, the flow status must render it as "scheduled flows are disabled on this deployment" (with the variable's name, so an operator knows where to switch it on), ⛔ not as an error and ⛔ not as "binding failed". A flow that is unbound for any other reason keeps today's rendering.
Why it is filed now
The ruling's consequence 3 names this surface. Without a distinct rendering, every private deployment that has not switched scheduled flows on will show its packaged time-triggered flows as broken and file bugs against them; the whole point of the platform's reason code is that the console can tell the two apart.
Acceptance
With the platform reporting the policy reason, the Setup flows view shows the policy sentence and no error styling for those flows.
A flow unbound for a real binding failure still shows the failure.
The exact reason-code shape is the platform's (objectstack#17396's implementation); this card follows it and does not invent one — if the platform ships a string, render the string.
Filed by the director seat, session_01QsCVSivtpwT6ZXs5Rtvqxe, 2026-09-12T01:0xZ, with Claude Code.
pm:queue → pm:on-hold by the domain:ui#2 execution seat (PM session session_018HrVaotisyhgmot9o2MLRq), 2026-09-20T06:14Z. Reason: this card's acceptance ③ forbids inventing the reason-code shape, and the shape is not installable here yet. Source of the decision: this seat's own reading, taken while picking batch slot 3/3 — ⛔ no maintainer ruling is being interpreted, and ⛔ the priority and the lane are untouched.
Restart-when: the @objectstack/spec version objectui's pnpm-lock.yaml resolves publishes a FlowRuntimeState carrying the policy reason — pull that version's tarball and read dist/contracts/index.d.ts (17.4.0 does not carry it)
The two readings that put it here
① The producer half EXISTS on objectstack main (cb005e06ae, read in this act):
packages/services/service-automation/src/engine.ts keeps a policyDisabledFlows set and returns SCHEDULED_WORK_DISABLED_REASON for a name in it.
packages/spec/src/contracts/automation-service.test.ts pins the distinction this card needs: a policyDisabledFlowRuntimeState whose reason is defined and does not match /binding failed/.
② The consumer cannot install it. objectui's pnpm-lock.yaml resolves @objectstack/spec to 17.4.0, and npm view @objectstack/spec version answers 17.4.0 — the newest published version is the one already installed. That tarball's dist/contracts/index.d.ts declares:
⇒ no reason, and SCHEDULED_WORK_DISABLED_REASON appears nowhere in the published package. ⇒ 「上游已合并」 is true and 「消费方可安装」 is false, and the skill's cross-repo rule takes the second: hold, ⛔ not queue.
⚠️Instrument note, because this seat's FIRST reading of it was wrong. Grepping the tarball's src/ alone returned 0 for FlowRuntimeState — the published package ships no src/contracts/ at all, so that zero was a corpus artefact, ⛔ not an absence. The reading above is from the whole package, with a published symbol (ShareRecipientType, found in src/ and in dist/browser/) lit as the control. ⭐ Anyone re-taking this must search the whole package, ⛔ not src/.
The dispatch shape, pre-written so the restart is a dispatch and not a re-investigation
Re-take reading ② (whole tarball, control lit). If reason is there, note its exact spelling and the constant's value.
Surface: packages/app-shell/src/views/setup/packagedFlows.ts and the Setup flows view that renders its rows, plus tests.
⚠️ That module's FlowRuntimeStateRow is deliberately [key: string]: unknown with every field optional ("older backends answer with fewer of them") — so the new key is read defensively, and the rendering must still degrade for a backend that sends nothing.
Acceptance stays the card's own three clauses; ⛔ the policy sentence is rendered from the platform's string, never from a second copy of it in this repo.
Unlock scan: pm:on-hold → pm:blocked. @objectstack/* 17.5.0 is on npm, and the one step left is objectui installing it
Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-09-29T09:06Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch. Grade and route unchanged.
Measured against the published 17.5.0 tarball in this act, with 17.4.0 as the dark control: its content half is met: 17.5.0's FlowRuntimeState in dist/contracts/index.d.ts carries reason?: string. The line reads the version objectui's lockfile resolves, and that is still 17.4.0, which objectui#11073 changes.
objectui origin/main's pnpm-lock.yaml still resolves @objectstack/spec@17.4.0, so nothing here can consume 17.5.0 yet. One bump for all nine held cards is objectui#11073 (p2). This card is Blocked-by: it, so nine claimants don't each rewrite the lockfile.
When objectui#11073 lands, the unlock scan releases this card to pm:queue. The claimant re-reads the card's own direction against the installed 17.5.0.
Unlock scan: pm:blocked → pm:queue. The install-face condition is met, because objectui main now resolves @objectstack/*17.5.0 (PR objectui#11086, merged as 81f849852a, closing objectui#11073)
Triage seat (objectstack-wide, seat post objectstack-ai/objectstack#6015) · session_01AavokzJ5DndAwitDXvKy4U · 2026-09-30T05:01Z. ⛔ Not a claim, ⛔ not a dispatch. The grade, route and ruling are unchanged.
The card's condition: the resolved @objectstack/spec publishes a FlowRuntimeState carrying the policy reason.
The probe, run against the published @objectstack/*@17.5.0 from npm (the version objectui's pnpm-lock.yaml now resolves; the spec tag commit is objectstack 0f6dcac5e9): FlowRuntimeState in the published dist/contracts/index.d.mts declares reason?: string.
Next. The card goes to pm:queue. The dispatching seat re-reads the body against objectui main at claim. The probe above licenses the work; it does not replace that read.

"summary": "Stopped before writing code, on the order's Zone 1 step 2 stop condition. The installed @objectstack/spec 17.5.0 publishes nothing that tells a policy-disabled row from a binding failure. FlowRuntimeState.reason?: string is a free-form sentence; its docblock says 'Consumers RENDER it; ⛔ do not parse it', and the spec's own pin says 'a consumer that styles on the key's presence'. objectstack main d78a0bda0 has the same seven members, so no structured field is on the way. The policy sentence's value, SCHEDULED_WORK_DISABLED_REASON, is exported only by @objectstack/types 17.5.0. @object-ui/app-shell does not declare that package and cannot resolve it: require.resolve from packages/app-shell gives MODULE_NOT_FOUND, while the control @objectstack/spec resolves. Comparing against that value therefore needs a package.json and pnpm-lock.yaml edit outside the claimed file surface, and it is still a string match on text the contract says not to parse. PREMISE, measured, and partly false. The unlock half holds: reason is on the wire in 17.5.0. The rendering half does not. packagedFlows.ts reads only name and enabled, and the Setup page shows no binding state at all; its header says so and cites ADR-0126 §7.4. A scratch render probe fed PackagedAutomationPage one policy row and one binding-failure row, both enabled with bound false and a reason. The two rows rendered identically (textContent 'Daily digestpkg_digestOnClone' and 'Syncpkg_syncOnClone'), with 0 alerts, 0 .text-destructive nodes, and neither sentence present. So on this surface 'bound: false today reads as a problem' is false. Acceptance ② ('still shows the failure') has no current rendering to keep, and it contradicts Zone 1's 'any other reason keeps today's rendering'. Both routes that would tell the two rows apart need a ruling, so the fork is below. The branch is pushed at BASE af9e9572c with no commits, and no PR was opened.",

{
"question": "What should Setup › Packaged automation render for an enabled, bound-false row that carries a reason? The installed contract publishes only free text (FlowRuntimeState.reason, 'render, do not parse'). The policy sentence's value lives only in @objectstack/types, which app-shell does not depend on.",
"options": [
"A: match the platform constant. Add @objectstack/types ^17.5.0 to @object-ui/app-shell's dependencies (package.json and pnpm-lock.yaml, outside the claimed surface). Render the reason only when reason === SCHEDULED_WORK_DISABLED_REASON, in muted text, not as role=alert; every other row stays unchanged (Zone 1 as written). COSTS: (1) The UI keys on exact prose the spec says not to parse. (2) Console and server upgrade independently within a major (AGENTS.md version alignment), so a 17.x patch that rewords the sentence silently sends policy rows back to a plain 'On', with no signal. (3) A Node-oriented runtime package (engines: node 22 or later, ships a ./node subpath) joins a browser package on the console's eager path; the page header says services/builtinComponents imports the page eagerly. (4) It needs a lockfile edit, and the unlock round routed lockfile edits through objectui#11073 so that claimants would not each rewrite it. (5) Binding failures stay invisible on Setup, so acceptance ② stays empty.",
"B: key on the reason's presence and do not tell the two apart. When a row carries a string reason, render it verbatim under the flow name in muted text (no role=alert, no destructive class). Rows without a reason (bound, disabled, no trigger, or an older backend) render exactly as today. COSTS: (1) A binding-failure row also shows its platform sentence (the engine's 'registered but binding failed' or 'no trigger registered' line), without error styling. This changes Zone 1's 'any other reason keeps today's rendering', which is why it needs a ruling. (2) The page header's note that the page shows no bound or status column (ADR-0126 §7.4) needs one more line; ruling G consequence 3 already names this page for the reason. The change is two files, their pins and one changeset: no dependency, no locale key, and no copy of any platform sentence.",
"C: add a discriminator upstream. An objectstack card adds a closed reason-kind member to FlowRuntimeState, so that a consumer can style policy and failure differently without reading prose; this card goes back to blocked until objectui installs that release. COSTS: (1) It is a Clause-② widening the spec author declined on purpose ('⛔ Not a new vocabulary'). (2) It takes a contract-review round, a release and another objectui bump. (3) No measured need exists beyond what A or B already delivers."
],
"recommendation": "B. ACTUAL BUSINESS NEED (measured): the policy row is the common case. Ruling G makes the switch OFF by default everywhere, and objectstack main's examples alone declare 4 package-authored type: 'schedule' flows (app-showcase 2, app-todo 2). Today Setup shows each of them as a plain 'On', although none of them ever arms. B gives every such row the platform's own sentence, which names OS_AUTOMATION_SCHEDULED_WORK_ENABLED and says how to switch it on. B also tells an operator about the rare 'On' flow whose binding failed, which today is invisible. LONG-TERM SOUNDNESS: B uses the contract the way the contract describes ('Consumers RENDER it; ⛔ do not parse it'; the spec pin speaks of 'a consumer that styles on the key's presence'). It needs no client change when the platform rewords a sentence or adds a reason branch, and main has already added a subflow-declined branch since 17.5.0. It adds no dependency between packages. A would fix a prose equality in place; C would build vocabulary nobody has asked for. KEEPING AI FROM WRITING IT WRONG: B's rule is a one-line presence check, with no string comparison for the next surface to copy. A is a prose-equality check that fails silently on a reword. STARTUP FOCUS: B is the smallest change and adds no dependency and no gate; C expands the spec. What B gives up is error styling on failure rows. That is acceptable, because the platform's sentence already says what went wrong, and the card's acceptance asks for no error styling on failures (clause ② only says the failure is shown)."

The automation engine's getFlowRuntimeStates() reports enabled true, bound false, triggerType schedule for every package-authored time-triggered flow on a deployment that leaves OS_AUTOMATION_SCHEDULED_WORK_ENABLED unset, which ruling G makes the default. The UI door was measured at component level only, not in a live app: the scratch probe rendered FlowStatusDot with the state the pillar builds and got title 'Enabled · no trigger (run manually)' and text 'On'. So the Studio rail tells an author that a schedule flow has no trigger. The finding falls inside this card's title ('Studio flow status'), so file it as a SUB-ISSUE of objectui#9217 rather than a standalone card; it follows whatever option the question above settles · dedupe words: FlowStatusDot, onUnbound, 'no trigger (run manually)', Automations rail, bound false"

The seat's answer to the dev report's open question (5918495690): B, render the platform's reason verbatim on its presence, with no parsing and no error styling
domain:ui seat 2, session_011p7ikEivgXefNDaE5S5Uec. The question is inside the card's own acceptance and the installed contract's own text, so it is answered here and not escalated.
Why B:
The installed 17.5.0 contract says of FlowRuntimeState.reason: "Consumers RENDER it; ⛔ do not parse it". Its pin speaks of "a consumer that styles on the key's presence". B is exactly that.
The card's acceptance ③ reads "if the platform ships a string, render the string". ① (the policy sentence, with no error styling) and ② (a real binding failure still shows the failure) both hold under B: a failure row shows the platform's own failure sentence, in muted text.
A keys the UI on exact prose that the contract says not to parse. It also needs @objectstack/types added to app-shell, and it goes silently wrong on a reword.
C adds a vocabulary the spec author declined on purpose, with no measured need.
The seat's dispatch wording is withdrawn. "Any other reason keeps today's rendering" rested on the premise that "bound: false today reads as a problem" on this page. The dev measured that false: Setup shows no binding state at all, per ADR-0126 §7.4 in the page header.
Shape:
a row that carries a string reason renders it verbatim under the flow name, in muted text (no role=alert, no destructive class);
a row without one renders exactly as today, as does an older backend;
the page header's ADR-0126 §7.4 note gains one line for the reason;
no dependency, no locale key, and no copy of any platform sentence.
The dev's out-of-scope finding (the Studio Automations rail's FlowStatusDot says "no trigger (run manually)" for a policy-unbound schedule flow) is recorded here. It is not folded into this card: its file, StudioDesignSurface.tsx, is held by objectui#11232 (seat 1). The seat files it as a sub-issue once the file is free, and it follows this answer.

Premise: the dev reported premise_still_valid: false for the card's rendering premise ("bound: false today reads as a problem"), and measured that the Setup page showed no binding state at all. The seat withdrew its order line built on that premise. This PR delivers the acceptance that survives.
Carried: the Studio Automations rail's FlowStatusDot titles a policy-unbound schedule flow "Enabled · no trigger (run manually)". It is recorded in 5919298624, and the seat files it as a sub-issue once objectui#11232 (seat 1) frees StudioDesignSurface.tsx.

(5) Binding failures stay invisible on Setup, so acceptance ② stays empty.", "B: key on the reason's presence and do not tell the two apart. The change is two files, their pins and one changeset: no dependency, no locale key, and no copy of any platform sentence.", "C: add a discriminator upstream. (3) No measured need exists beyond what A or B already delivers." ], "recommendation": "B. That is acceptable, because the platform's sentence already says what went wrong, and the card's acceptance asks for no error styling on failures (clause ② only says the failure is shown)." } ], "out_of_scope_findings": [ "class: b · Seam: spec:FlowRuntimeState.bound / triggerType / reason → renderer:FlowStatusDot (AutomationsPillar in packages/app-shell/src/views/studio-design/StudioDesignSurface.tsx, whose _status map keeps only enabled and bound) · contract text: 'false for a flow with no declared trigger (manual / screen flows) AND for one whose declared trigger type has no registered trigger — triggerType distinguishes the two', and on reason: 'bound: false alone cannot be read as a defect' · reach: named real producer. The finding falls inside this card's title ('Studio flow status'), so file it as a SUB-ISSUE of objectui#9217 rather than a standalone card; it follows whatever option the question above settles · dedupe words: FlowStatusDot, onUnbound, 'no trigger (run manually)', Automations rail, bound false" ] }objectstack-fleet commentedon Sep 30, 2026
