finding(plugin-grid): clicking a column header sends $orderby as an array of {field, order} objects, a shape the protocol's odata.zod.ts does not declare — it declares string | string[] #9554

Closed as not planned

Description

@claude

Measured by the domain:spec @ objectui PM seat while producing the server-contract measurement
objectui#8961 was blocked on, 2026-09-15T03:08Z–03:09Z.
objectui origin/main = b7479abc74100e022b5f1233fd14d4fabc891788; objectstack origin/main = b3b43b6ea0.
⛔ Filed as a finding only — grading, domain:* and routing are the triage seat's.

The defect

When a user clicks a column header, object-grid sends $orderby as an array of objects:

params.$orderby = headerSort.map((s) => ({ field: s.field, order: s.order }));

(packages/plugin-grid/src/ObjectGrid.tsx, the headerSort arm.)

The protocol declares $orderby as a string or an array of strings, and nothing else —
objectstack packages/spec/src/api/odata.zod.ts, verbatim:

$orderby: z.union([
  z.string(),           // "name desc"
  z.array(z.string()), // ["name desc", "email asc"]
]).optional().describe('Sort order'),

packages/spec/src/api/query-adapter.zod.ts carries only a doc example in the same string form
($orderby=name asc) and declares no second shape.

⇒ an array of { field, order } objects is not a declared value of this key.

The three shapes one component family puts on one key

producer shape declared by the protocol
object-grid array arm (toOrderByClause) "field order" join string ✅ yes
object-grid headerSort arm [{ field, order }] object array ❌ no
shared sink convertSortToQueryParams (@object-ui/core) Record<string, 'asc' | 'desc'> map ❌ no

⭐ The join string — the one repeatedly described in this repo as object-grid's private
lowering — is the only one of the three the protocol actually declares. That framing is worth
correcting wherever it appears.

Why this is filed rather than folded into objectui#8961

objectui#8961 is the header-arrow reader, and it is now in the decision inbox carrying this same
server-contract measurement. This card is the writer on the other side of the same key, and it
is a different question: #8961 asks what the arrow may parse, this asks what the grid may send.

objectui#8973's pin names this arm and calls it "a documented, deliberate difference, not a
defect"
. ⚠️ Deliberate and declared are not the same property. That sentence records an
intention; it does not record a protocol reading, and the protocol reading above did not exist when
it was written.

⚠️ What is NOT measured, and it is the half that decides the grading

Whether the server actually accepts the object array. This seat read the protocol
declaration only — ⛔ not the driver, the runtime parser, or any request log. Two outcomes, and
they point opposite ways:

  • the server refuses or silently ignores it ⇒ clicking a column header produces an unordered
    result set, which is a user-visible defect of the same family as objectui#8961;
  • the server accepts it ⇒ the protocol is declared narrower than the implementation, and
    under the maintainer's standing principle 「协议不正确的应该先修改协议」 the repair is an
    objectstack spec card first, ⛔ not an objectui change.

Whoever takes this owes that reading before proposing either direction.

Dedup: searched before filing; objectui#8961 (the reader half, in the decision inbox),
objectui#5270 / #5293 / #3950 (all closed, all about sort shapes on the authoring side, none about
the wire value of $orderby). The search's must-hit control returned #8961 itself, so the empty
result is a reading rather than a broken query.

    Worktree: objectui-issue-9554
    Domain: domain:ui
    Seat: domain:ui#3 (seat post objectui#9800)
    File surface: packages/plugin-grid/src/ObjectGrid.tsx plus its tests under packages/plugin-grid/src/__tests__/, and one .changeset/ entry. packages/core/src/utils/sort-query.ts is read-only for this card — enumerate it, ⛔ do not change it (stop on breach; explain in the report)
    Container & model: M, mode:subagent, model: default judgment tier
    Clause-②: no
    Thread-read: 5713359008
    Serial constraints cleared: no open PR and no in-flight domain:ui card declares packages/plugin-grid. Same 13-card in-flight set enumerated on this seat's objectui#9507 claim of the same round; the nearest neighbours are seat 2's #9821 and #7181 in packages/core — this card touches core read-only, so there is no write contention, and this seat's own delivered-but-unlanded #9542 touches packages/core/src/actions/ActionRunner.ts, a different file from utils/sort-query.ts.

    Premise re-verified on origin/main = 3ae740c4, ⛔ not taken from the card

    packages/plugin-grid/src/ObjectGrid.tsx:2003 — params.$orderby = headerSort.map((s) => ({ field: s.field, order: s.order }));, exactly the shape the card names, with the sibling arm at :2040 assigning the join-string form. The third shape's sink is packages/core/src/utils/sort-query.ts (convertSortToQueryParams).

    Timeline read for an already-merged delivery: no cross-referenced PR at all.

    ⚠️ Conditional ruling — the deciding measurement has NOT been taken, and this dispatch is built around that

    The card is explicit that the half which decides its own grading is unmeasured: 「Whether the server actually accepts the object array. This seat read the protocol declaration only — ⛔ not the driver, the runtime parser, or any request log.」 The two outcomes point opposite ways — a refusing server makes this a user-visible defect (clicking a column header yields an unordered result set); an accepting server makes it a case of the protocol being declared narrower than the implementation, which is a packages/spec question in the sibling repo and ⛔ not an objectui fix.

    ⇒ Ruled in the three-part conditional form:

    1. Ruling — if the server does not accept the object array, converge the headerSort arm onto the declared shape, which is the join string the sibling arm already produces (z.union([z.string(), z.array(z.string())]) in objectstack packages/spec/src/api/odata.zod.ts, verbatim on the card).
    2. The premise it hangs on, named and falsifiable — the dev measures first, at source in the sibling objectstack checkout (the REST/OData layer's $orderby parsing), and reports the reading before writing any fix.
    3. Explicit prohibition — if the premise is falsified (the server does accept it), ⛔ STOP and report a fork. ⛔ Do NOT force the fix anyway, and ⛔ do not quietly fall back to the other option. A premise_still_valid: false with pr: null is a legitimate, valuable terminal report here — it would redirect this card to the spec seat rather than spending a UI change on it.

    Triage's own fence rides along: 「派发时先把三种都枚举出来再动,⛔ 不要只改 headerSort 这一臂」 — enumerate all three producers before acting. Enumerating is required; changing the @object-ui/core sink is not in this card's surface and needs its own card if the enumeration shows it warrants one.

    ⚠️ One framing correction the card makes and this seat endorses: objectui#8973's pin calls this arm 「a documented, deliberate difference, not a defect」. Deliberate and declared are not the same property — that sentence records an intention, not a protocol reading, and the protocol reading did not exist when it was written. ⛔ Do not treat that pin as settling the question.

    Clause-② no

    Under the ruled branch nothing widens: the grid stops sending an undeclared shape and sends one the protocol declares verbatim, which narrows what this producer emits back to the contract. No exported symbol changes. ⚠️ If the premise is falsified and the work turns into widening the protocol's declared union, that is a different card in a different repo and this no does not travel with it.

The server ACCEPTS the object array, deliberately and in two independent places, and through the shipped adapter the object array never reaches the server as an object array at all. The card's quotation is accurate but it quotes a schema that governs no runtime door: `ODataQuerySchema` in `packages/spec/src/api/odata.zod.ts` is still verbatim `z.union([z.string(), z.array(z.string())])` at objectstack HEAD (no third arm), and its only in-repo consumer is the `buildUrl` helper inside that same file. The declaration that governs a query bag is `QueryTransportParamsSchema.$orderby = DataEngineSortSchema`, reached through `QueryWithTransportSchema`, which `FindDataRequestSchema.query` uses — and it accepts the object array and the record map while REFUSING the string and string-array forms, with the exclusion written out as deliberate in its own source. ⇒ the card's table is inverted: of the three shapes, the `headerSort` arm's object array is the one the governing declaration canonicalizes, and the join string the ruling would converge onto is the one it refuses. Converging the arms onto the join string would move the grid from the declared shape to the refused one. No user-visible defect exists: clicking a column header does NOT produce an unordered result set.",

Reached from `FindDataRequestSchema.query` in `packages/spec/src/api/protocol.zod.ts` via `QueryWithTransportSchema`. The same file states the exclusion verbatim: '⛔ Three shapes are deliberately NOT declared, because lowering them means PARSING ... a JSON-encoded `$filter` string, the OData `$orderby` / `sort` expression string (`name desc`, `-created_at`) and its string-array form.'",
        "leg_2_runtime_ingress": "objectstack `packages/metadata-protocol/src/protocol.ts`, `normalizeSortNodes` — described in its own docblock as 'the one shared normalizer every ingress funnels through', covering the REST list route, `POST /data/:object/query`, the export route and the RPC dispatcher. Its `fromElement` reads `{field, order}` element-wise; its docblock's own spelling table lists the `SortNode[]` form as one that 'worked'. Pinned live by `protocol.orderby-vocabulary.test.ts`: the case named 'control — the canonical spelling still reaches the engine and sorts' passes `orderBy: [{field:'updated_at', order:'desc'}]` and asserts both the options the engine received and the row identity that came back. In the same file the `it.each` case labelled 'OData spelling' sends `$orderby: [{field:'updated_at', direction:'desc'}]` and gets `400 INVALID_SORT` naming the `direction` KEY — a per-element read. That is direct evidence the object array on `$orderby` is parsed as sort nodes rather than refused as a shape; a shape-level refusal could not have diagnosed an inner key.",
        "leg_3_transport_what_the_user_sees": "EXECUTABLE, on my base. objectui's own `@object-ui/data-objectstack` never puts `$orderby` on the wire in any shape. Ran `packages/data-objectstack/src/orderby-serialization.test.ts` (27 passed, exit 0): the cases 'a SortNode[] (plain route)' and '(expand route)' pin `[{field:'name', order:'asc'}]` arriving as `sort=name`, and 'a SortNode[] with a descending key' pins the two-key case as `sort=status,-created_at`. The shipped Console wires exactly this adapter — `AdapterProvider` and `MetadataProvider` in `@object-ui/app-shell` both import `ObjectStackAdapter` from `@object-ui/data-objectstack`. ⇒ the predicted defect (a column-header click yielding an unordered result set) does not occur; the object array is lowered client-side before any server door sees it.",

NO, and filing one would be a mistake: this shape is declared, it reaches the wire correctly, and nothing is broken. Neither cross-references the other. Which is authoritative for a `$orderby` on a query bag, and what happens to the other one? Terminal report reviewed — premise falsified, and the card is INVERTED. Released to pm:retriage; redirect target filed.

    domain:ui seat 3 (session session_01Xm4WFhEe5mwcgyqHjxR2hn), 2026-09-18T09:14Z. ⛔ This is not a failed dispatch. premise_still_valid: false with pr: null is a legitimate terminal report and is reviewed here as re-triage input, exactly as the dispatch's conditional ruling required.

    The dispatch was premise-gated, and the gate fired

    This card was dispatched in the three-part conditional form because the card itself said the half deciding its own grading was unmeasured: 「Whether the server actually accepts the object array … ⛔ not the driver, the runtime parser, or any request log.」 Clause 3 forbade writing a fix if the premise failed. It failed, the dev stopped, no PR was opened and the budgeted POST /pulls was not spent.

    ⭐ That is the whole value of this round. Without the gate the ruled fix would have converged the headerSort arm onto the join string — which the measurement shows is the shape the governing declaration deliberately refuses. A regression would have shipped as a fix, with a green test pinning the wrong direction.

    Verified independently by this seat on objectstack origin/main = 26c73fb, ⛔ not adopted from the report

    reading source verdict
    ODataQuerySchema.$orderby = z.union([z.string(), z.array(z.string())]) packages/spec/src/api/odata.zod.ts:119-122 ✅ the card's quotation is exact, and no third arm has appeared
    QueryTransportParamsSchema.$orderby = DataEngineSortSchema packages/spec/src/data/data-engine.zod.ts:853 ✅
    DataEngineSortSchema = two record maps + z.array(SortNodeSchema) same file, :43-47 ✅
    the string forms are excluded deliberately same file, ~:826, verbatim: 「⛔ Three shapes are deliberately NOT declared, because lowering them means PARSING — and a second parser beside the door's is how one rule gets two implementations that disagree」 ✅
    query: QueryWithTransportSchema.optional() — so the transport schema grades a query bag packages/spec/src/api/protocol.zod.ts:1904 ✅

    ⇒ the card's table is inverted. Of the three shapes, the headerSort arm's object array is the one the governing declaration canonicalizes; the join string the card calls 「the only one the protocol actually declares」 is the one it refuses. The filing seat's reading reproduces exactly — it is simply not the declaration that grades this key.

    ⚠️ Attributed rather than adopted: the 「ODataQuerySchema's only in-repo consumer is its own buildUrl helper」 reading, the runtime-ingress leg (normalizeSortNodes) and the adapter-lowering leg (serializeOrderBy → sort=, 27 tests green) are the dev's. This seat verified the schema legs above and did not re-derive those.

    Consequences recorded on this card

    • No user-visible defect. Clicking a column header does not produce an unordered result set — per the dev's executable leg, @object-ui/data-objectstack lowers every shape to the server's sort= shorthand before any door sees it.
    • objectui#8973's pin survives intact. Its sentence 「a documented, deliberate difference, not a defect」 is now true on both properties: the difference is deliberate AND the declared one. ⚠️ The dispatch's own framing correction (「deliberate and declared are not the same property」) was a fair caution and it resolves in the pin's favour. ⛔ Nothing to repair there.
    • convertSortToQueryParams warrants no card. Its shape is declared, reaches the wire correctly, and the file records that swapping the grid onto it is objectui#8767 route B, declined by the maintainer by name on 2026-09-10 pending a card that measures the server contract and both readers. ⇒ this report is that measurement; whoever re-opens that declination should land on it.

    Redirect target

    objectstack#18977 — filed by this seat in the repo where the fix lands: $orderby is declared twice and incompatibly, each declaration accepting exactly what the other refuses, with no cross-reference either way. It carries the measured cost: this card is that misreading, already paid for.

    On the dev's request for the four-axis framework

    The dev correctly declined to substitute axes of its own and asked for the framework. ⛔ Not handed over, and deliberately. The four-axis analysis is an artefact of the seat that files a decision card, and this decision is a public-contract question owned by domain:spec in the objectstack repo — not something an objectui dev, or this seat, should analyse on that lane's behalf. objectstack#18977 carries the options as input, explicitly labelled as not a ruling. The dev's judgement here was right.

    Release

    Release: session session_01Xm4WFhEe5mwcgyqHjxR2hn · cause: premise falsified by measurement — the producer this card calls off-protocol is sending the canonical shape; the fix as ruled would have been a regression · destination: pm:queue + pm:retriage, assignee cleared, for the triage seat to re-grade (close as not-planned, or re-scope to the framing correction) with objectstack#18977 as the redirect target. ⛔ This seat does not re-grade or close it: 改判 is pm:retriage's channel.

    ⚠️ Housekeeping: an empty branch claude/issue-9554-grid-orderby-declared-shape was pushed by the routing probe before any measurement and remains on the remote with no commits. Remote ref deletion is 403-blocked in this container and AGENTS.md does not authorize branch cleanup, so it was left; recorded here so it is accounted for rather than mysterious.
