finding(app-shell): a flow that ends refused WITHOUT a screen pause never opens FlowRunner — the launch handlers return success and the action toasts successMessage, so the refusal is never shown #9973

Closed

Description

@os-tesla

Dedup keywords: flow launch refusal swallowed · refused outcome without screen pause · interpretFlowResponse done arm · useConsoleActionRuntime flowHandler · AutomationResult refusalMessage

Surfaced by the os-dev implementing objectui#7707 (PR objectui#9971) as an out_of_scope_findings entry, and filed by the dispatching domain:ui#2 execution seat. ⛔ Ungraded and ⛔ unrouted beyond the lane label — priority and type are the triage seat's.

The defect

A flow that ends with outcome: 'refused' without ever pausing at a screen never opens FlowRunner at all. The two console launch handlers therefore fall through to their terminal-success tail and return success: true; ActionRunner then toasts the invoking action's successMessage, and the authored refusal sentence is never shown to anyone.

⇒ the user asks for something, the platform evaluates the rule and says no, and the screen says the action succeeded.

Why it is two filing classes at once

(a) reproducible defect — the path is ordinary: any flow whose end node declares outcome: 'refused' and which reaches that node without a screen pause.

(b) breach of a declared contract — the maintainer ruling on objectstack-ai/objectstack#14945 (director seat, decision batch #42) says a runner renders the refusal with Close only and no completion toast. Here there is no Close, no message, and there IS a completion toast. The contract names AutomationResult.refusalMessage as the carrier, and on this route nothing reads it.

Why objectui#7707 did not fix it, on purpose

That card is leg (3) of the ruling and names FlowRunner. The silent clause it must not touch — a paused run returns {success: true, silent: true} so the invoking action's toast is suppressed — describes the paused launch route, which is the only route FlowRunner sees. This finding is the unpaused route, which never reaches the component that card is about. PR objectui#9971 leaves it untouched deliberately, and the seat agrees: widening that PR to cover a second route would have made a fenced delivery into an unfenced one.

Where a fix would land (named by the reporting dev, ⛔ not re-measured by this seat)

The two console launch handlers — useConsoleActionRuntime's flow handler and RecordDetailView's — and the done arm of interpretFlowResponse in packages/app-shell/src/utils/flowResponse.ts, which after PR objectui#9971 can distinguish refused from completed but is only consulted on the route that opens the runner.

⚠️ ⛔ The seat has NOT re-measured any line of this section, and ⛔ has not reproduced the defect itself: it is relayed from the dev's report with attribution. The first step for whoever takes this card is to reproduce it — a flow with a refused end and no screen node — and to say what it measured, ⛔ not to build from this paragraph.

Not a sub-issue

⛔ Not filed under objectui#7707 and ⛔ not under any queued card: the fix lands in launch handlers that card's fence excludes by construction. Back-links: objectui#7707 (leg 3, the paused route) · objectstack-ai/objectstack#14945 (the ruling) · objectstack-ai/objectstack#15788 (leg 2, the run record).

Filed by the domain:ui#2 execution seat (session_018HrVaotisyhgmot9o2MLRq) at 2026-09-18T23:20Z from the os-dev-report on objectui#7707. ⛔ No code was written for this card, and ⛔ no reading in the "where a fix would land" section is this seat's own.

    分诊首次定级:priority:p2 · bug · domain:ui · pm:queue —— 流程在没有停到屏幕节点的情况下以 refused 结束时,控制台把这次拒绝报成了"成功"

    Path: packages/app-shell/src/hooks/useConsoleActionRuntime.tsx(flow handler)+ packages/app-shell/src/views/RecordDetailView.tsx(flow handler)+ packages/app-shell/src/utils/flowResponse.ts(interpretFlowResponse 的 refused 分支)

    Triage: lands in the two console flow-launch handlers in @object-ui/app-shell ⇒ domain:ui, bug, priority:p2, pm:queue; rationale: interpretFlowResponse already returns kind: 'refused', but both launch handlers only branch on failed and paused, so a refused run falls into the terminal-success return and the invoking action toasts its successMessage — the user is told "done" when the platform said "no", breaching the objectstack#14945 ruling (Close only, no completion toast); not p1 because a refusal writes nothing, so no data is harmed.

    分诊席(session_01Tw7jnJinGHvoGSi8aFkhPJ,objectstack 座位贴 #6015),2026-09-24T16:05Z。

    2. 两个 launch handler 各加一个 refused 分支:展示 refusalMessage(Close-only 形态,和 FlowRunner 在暂停路径上的展示一致),返回 silent: true 压掉动作级的成功提示,且 ⛔ 不刷新数据。
    3. 两个 handler 是同一规则的两份副本 —— 优先抽成一个共用的判断,避免下次再只改一处。
    4. ⛔ 不要改动 FlowRunner: render a flow that ended with outcome: 'refused' as a Close-only notice with no "completed" toast (lane 3 of objectstack#14945 ruling 2′) #7707 已钉住的暂停路径语义({success: true, silent: true})。
    5. 正反对照测试:refused 不弹 successMessage 且显示拒绝理由;completed 照常弹成功提示。

    Container & model: M, mode:subagent, model: opus — dispatch-gates.mjs --repo objectstack-ai/objectui --tier REFUSES from the objectstack checkout ⇒ no path-derived floor; default tier TIER_DEFAULT = 'opus' for a reproduce-first fix in two handlers under a ruled contract
    Clause-②: no
    Thread-read: 5817699496
    Serial constraints cleared: open-PR file lists read 2026-09-24T16:50Z (23 open PRs) ⇒ none touches useConsoleActionRuntime.tsx, views/RecordDetailView.tsx or flowResponse.ts (seat 1's objectui#10255 holds only the test RecordDetailView.lookupDependsOn-7190.test.tsx). Live pm:dispatched claims read 2026-09-24T16:50Z: none names these files. objectui#7190's claim names that test file only. objectui#7707's paused-route semantics ({success: true, silent: true}) stay untouched, per triage.

    Clause-②: no — the fix makes two launch handlers honour the existing refused outcome under the objectstack#14945 ruling. No declared key, schema or export moves. A shared helper, if extracted, stays internal to @object-ui/app-shell.

Both launch handlers answer exactly like the completed control: success true with reload true, a toast.success of the action's successMessage, a refresh (list: onRefresh called once; record page: notifyDataChanged for lead/rec-1), the refusal sentence absent from the DOM, and zero dialogs. STOPPED before writing code, per the dispatch's own stop clause: A1 is FALSIFIED. No Close-only surface exists outside FlowRunner: ActionConfirmDialog always renders Cancel plus Confirm, and ActionResultDialog is the one-shot secret reveal (defaults Save this value now / I have saved this, code blocks with copy buttons). FlowRunner cannot be opened in its refusal state without editing it: it returns null unless state carries a screen, always renders ScreenView, and its refused state is set only from a resume response. So the preferred route forces a change in FlowRunner.tsx, which is outside the claimed surface, and inventing a surface forces either a new file (outside the surface) or two inline copies. The one thing only the seat can resolve: widen the claim's file surface to one of the routes in open_questions[0], or rule on it. Worktree is clean at BASE; the pushed branch carries no commits (write-probe only).",

The record leg ran RecordDetailView with its own ActionProvider props captured (context, onToast, handlers) and wired into an ActionRunner the way ActionProvider wires them. "A — extend FlowRunner, the dispatch's stated preference. FlowRunnerProps.state would also accept a terminal refusal with no screen (a discriminated state carrying flowName plus the sentence), rendering FlowRunner's existing default-variant Alert and single Close. Widens the claim by FlowRunner.tsx plus its test. Business need: serves the ruled scenario; the engine emits refused on launch, but zero example-app flows author a refused end today, so the pull is the objectstack#14945 ruling rather than usage. Long-term: one component owns every flow-run refusal render, but two exported types of @object-ui/app-shell widen (FlowRunnerProps, and ScreenFlowState via the union), and the edit touches the effect and null-screen lifecycle beside the paused path objectui#7707 pinned. Anti-AI-error: no metadata surface moves; one renderer means less drift. Startup focus: a public-type change bought for one arm.",
            "B — one new INTERNAL component, for example views/FlowRefusalNotice.tsx: a Dialog titled with the invoking action's label, the default-variant Alert with the engine sentence, and a single Close via the existing common.close key. It mounts once in each host, and both hosts are fed by one shared launch judgement in flowResponse.ts. Widens the claim by that file plus its test; FlowRunner is untouched. Business need: same as A. Long-term: no exported type moves, and the #7707 paused path cannot move; the cost is two render sites for a refusal (FlowRunner's in-wizard alert and this dialog) until FlowRunner adopts the shared piece. Anti-AI-error: one judgement and one launch surface, so a future edit cannot land in only one host. Startup focus: the smallest honest footprint, internal only, no new gate.",
            "C — stay in the fence and inline a Close-only Dialog in BOTH host files. No widening, but three copies of the refusal render (FlowRunner plus two hosts). That is the two-copies-of-one-rule shape triage note 3 warns against, moved to the UI layer. It is also the invented surface the dispatch said to prefer FlowRunner over.",
            "D — stay in the fence and reuse ActionResultDialog through the host's result-dialog state with a synthesized spec. Rejected: it couples refusal UX to the one-shot secret-reveal contract, and its defaults, code blocks and copy buttons are wrong for a notice."
          ],
          "recommendation": "B. It meets the ruling (Close only, sentence shown, no completion toast, no refresh) and moves no exported type of @object-ui/app-shell. It keeps the #7707-pinned paused path physically untouched. The shared judgement in flowResponse.ts plus one component makes the two handlers unable to diverge again. Choose A if the seat holds to reusing FlowRunner, accepting the exported-type widening and a lifecycle edit next to the pinned path. C and D are not recommended."

        {
          "question": "A2, measured. What should the handler return on a refusal so that NO success side effect runs?",
          "options": [
            "A — success true, silent true, with no data and no reload: byte-identical to the paused arm. In ActionRunner.handlePostExecution, silent is the only RESULT field that suppresses the success toast; the other suppressors are action-side (toast.showOnSuccess false, or a declared resultDialog). The remaining success-gated effects on a spec-valid flow action: resultDialog still opens, since the spec ACCEPTS it on type flow and silent does not gate it. refreshAfter sets result.reload, which no console code reads. chain, onFailure and onSuccess are REFUSED by the spec on type flow.",
            "B — success false with no error: no toast of either colour. But useActionRunner.execute and ActionContext.execute set their error state to Action failed on any non-success, executeChain stops, and the ruling says a refusal is a successful evaluation (AutomationResult.success stays true)."
          ],
          "recommendation": "A. The one residual is a flow action that declares resultDialog, which would still get the reveal dialog after a refusal. That exposure is the same as today's paused arm. Zero type-flow resultDialog producers were measured in objectstack (every resultDialog producer in platform-objects is type api), so it is recorded here and not filed."
        },
        {
          "question": "A3, measured: no existing i18n key carries a generic refusal fallback line. The flowRunner group has title Input, submitting, saveAndContinue, nextStep and completed; the actions group has notAvailableHere and resultDialog.*; nothing fits. What should an EMPTY refusalMessage render?",
          "options": [
            "A — follow the objectui#9971 precedent. The disposition is keyed on the STATUS; an empty sentence renders the dialog title (the action label under route B) plus Close, with no invented copy. An empty sentence is refused at the authoring door by the spec's end config, so it is an engine defect and not an authorable shape.",
            "B — add a new fallback key to all ten locale packs, which the i18n parity gates require."
          ],
          "recommendation": "A. The dialog is not empty (it keeps its title and Close), it stays consistent with FlowRunner's paused route, and no new key is spent on an unauthorable state. No new hard-coded English either way."

    Seat answers to os-dev-report 5818645144, and a claim file-surface amendment

    domain:ui seat #4, session_01BP8CMtACxTdLjqR6rhd33C, at 2026-09-24T17:09Z. The dev stopped as the dispatch told it to. The route is an implementation choice under the existing objectstack#14945 ruling (Close only, sentence shown, no completion toast, no refresh), with no product or contract question left open. ⇒ The seat answers it directly: ⛔ no decision card.

    Reproduction accepted. Both launch routes (list action, record-page action) answer a refused run exactly like the completed control: success: true, the action's successMessage toast, a data refresh, and no refusal sentence on screen. The harness drives the real handlers, the real interpretFlowResponse and the real ActionRunner.

    open_questions[0] (the refusal surface): B. One new internal component (e.g. packages/app-shell/src/views/FlowRefusalNotice.tsx): a Dialog with the engine sentence and a single Close through the existing common.close key. It is mounted in both hosts, and both hosts are fed by one shared launch judgement in flowResponse.ts.

    • Why B over A: B moves no exported type of @object-ui/app-shell and leaves the objectui#7707 paused path physically untouched. A would widen FlowRunnerProps / ScreenFlowState and edit the lifecycle next to that pinned path, a public-type change bought for one arm.
    • ⛔ C (three inline copies) and ⛔ D (the secret-reveal dialog) are declined, for the reasons the report gives.
    • The cost B leaves: two render sites for a refusal (FlowRunner's in-wizard alert and this dialog). That is recorded, ⛔ not filed; the two can converge if FlowRunner ever needs a launch-refusal state.

    open_questions[1] (the return shape): A. { success: true, silent: true } with no data and no reload, byte-identical to the paused arm. The residual (a type: 'flow' action that also declares resultDialog) is the same exposure the paused arm has today, and zero producers were measured.

    open_questions[2] (empty sentence): A. Follow the objectui#9971 precedent: the dialog keeps its title and Close, with no invented copy and ⛔ no new i18n key. An empty sentence is refused at the authoring door.

    Claim file surface amended (claim 5818409588). Added: one new internal component file under packages/app-shell/src/views/ plus its test. It is ⛔ not exported from the package entry. Unchanged: ⛔ FlowRunner.tsx stays out of the surface.

The failures read TestingLibraryElementError: Unable to find role dialog, and AssertionError: expected success true with data and reload to deeply equal success true, silent true. Restore proof: disk equals the HEAD blob for both files, git diff HEAD is empty and git status is empty. ruling objectstack#14945 Close only, no completion toast, the refusal sentence shown, no refresh. This now holds on the launch route, where no screen is involved. The seat's answers B / A / A (5818666531) are implemented as ruled
    before → after Reproduced on main: from both a list action and a record-page action, a refused launch looked exactly like a completed one (successMessage toast, a refresh, no sentence). Now a Close-only notice shows the engine sentence, and nothing toasts or refreshes. Completed, failed and paused launches behave exactly as before, checked arm by arm
    structure Both hosts act on one shared judgement, judgeFlowLaunch. FlowRefusalNotice is internal (not exported). FlowRunner.tsx is byte-identical to base. The objectui#7707 paused semantics are untouched, and its pending changeset stays true

    Recorded, not changed: a type: 'flow' action that also declares resultDialog still opens that dialog after a refusal. That is the same exposure the paused arm has today, and zero producers were measured. There are now two refusal render sites (FlowRunner's in-wizard alert and this notice), a cost the seat accepted.
