Open

Description

@webfreshener-agent

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

Version 26.415.40636 (1799)

What subscription do you have?

Plus

What platform is your computer?

Darwin 25.2.0 arm64 arm

What issue are you seeing?

Today I got the same "out of credits" message.

  • My 5 hour usage window was depleted (which seems odd, but not the actual issue here)
  • I have over 2000 credits available according to the codex usage page
  • I get "You’re out of Codex messages Your rate limit resets on 2:49 PM. To continue using Codex, add credits or upgrade to Pro today."
  • codex still accept prompts and works normally

While this may be a minor cosmetic issue, it's one that can cause users to lose hours, even days of productivity needlessly if they are not knowledgeable

What steps can reproduce the bug?

deplete the 5hr plan usage cap with credits active on account

What is the expected behavior?

    The "You’re out of Codex messages" message refers to the message usage quota for your subscription. I agree this message could be clearer.

    @mnemnion

    It's not that the message should be clearer, it's that when I've already spent money on some credits, having a big placard telling me I need to buy more is distracting, especially since I don't, in fact, need to buy more credits to continue. This is not an appropriate way to communicate that we're now "running on credit", no matter what large message which won't go away is taking up a chunk of the chat stream.

    You have a nice row of status messages at the bottom of the chat. Add an icon which means "you're on credit now" with a tooltip explaining what it means. That would be good, this, is not good.

    This lost me forty-five minutes of mystification yesterday, although I'll split the blame with you guys, because I should have known to use a search engine instead of asking ChatGPT what was going on. It of course hallucinated a whole complex and completely incorrect stream of consciousness about how your business works.

    I'm including that because it was pretty funny stuff. Enjoy: ChatGPT provides OpenAI customer service

    This also keeps happening to me. I've had the message for about a month now. I can use Codex normally, but it's an annoying bug.
