Feature request: Show 5-hour and weekly usage limits persistently in the Chatgpt/Codex app #24182
Please add a persistent place in the Codex App UI to show current usage information, instead of requiring users to open Settings specifically to check it.
Motivation
Usage is something users may want to monitor while working, especially during longer sessions. Having it only available under Settings makes it harder to keep an eye on consumption and can interrupt the workflow.
Possible placement
A compact usage indicator could live somewhere unobtrusive, for example:
the app sidebar
the status bar / footer area
the account/profile menu
a small expandable indicator near the model/session controls
Expected behavior
The UI should make usage visible at a glance, with optional expansion for more detail. This would help users understand current consumption without leaving their active work context.
/status does show you usage remaining now, but Idk how to put it in the codex sidebar
Thanks for pointing this out. /status is helpful, but it doesn’t fully address this feature request:
It doesn’t show the weekly usage limit.
It still has to be invoked manually to display usage information.
Its output takes up space in the main content area.
What I’m looking for is a compact, persistent indicator that shows both the 5-hour and weekly usage limits at a glance, without requiring users to open Settings or run a command.

I am experiencing the same issue with the WEB interface, which completele conceals the fact that work-labeled chats consume paid quota tokens, and have also created a separate post about it here:
The lack of a clear, persistent usage indicator—combined with the poorly explained shared quota between Codex and ChatGPT Work—is causing unnecessary confusion for paying users.
I am linking the discussions so the reports can be cross-referenced and the broader impact of this issue is easier to see.

Related but distinct regular-Chat case: #44796 requests an authoritative used/remaining/reset counter for the fixed-count GPT-6 Pro / GPT-5.6 Sol Pro Chat allowance.
OpenAI's current model-limit documentation explicitly separates that Chat pool from Work/Codex. The new issue is intentionally scoped to exposing the server-authoritative regular-Chat message balance in Settings → Usage and the model picker, while this thread covers persistent visibility of Codex/Work limits.
Cross-linking here because the UX principle is the same—quota state should be visible before exhaustion—without conflating the separate allowance pools.
Same annoyance here, so I built it for myself: a tiny menu bar app that shows the 5h and weekly limits as two rings, with reset times and a chime at 50/20%. Free and open source, in case it saves someone else the tab-switching: https://github.com/yourarnav/CodexReserve

Once activated, the
/statuspanel keeps displaying the context window at all times for new and existing threads, not just on demand.I activate it by typing
/statusand then selecting theStatus Toggle Context Usageoverlay popup.Once it's activated, it stays on all the time for the current and future threads:

Thanks, but I want to see my 5h limit and weekly limit.

I know you already noted this in your original post and that's why you made this feature request:
That's still available in the settings menu (Codex desktop app) as it was before.

i think the point here is to show the 5h limit on the bar not by clicking setting
edoardaoo commentedon Jun 18, 2026
i really miss this always displaying. the need to click in settings>remaining usage is really counterintuitive
BitCalSaul commentedon Jun 18, 2026
@edoardaoo did you find some way to do it

So, there's no way to have a bar with current usage remaining permanently shown somewhere in the UI?
links-joe commentedon Jul 15, 2026
Sadly, I think that's correct. It's like if your car had no fuel gauge and forced you to dig through multiple menus to see how much gas you have left.
