Computer Use unavailable on Windows: sandboxPolicy missing #29267

Closed as duplicate

Environment

  • OS: Windows 11
  • Codex app version: 26.616.41845
  • Computer Use plugin: installed and enabled

Issue

Computer Use fails before it can detect or access any application.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Restart Codex.
  2. Start a new thread.
  3. Invoke @Computer and ask it to interact with a visible application, for example Calculator or SolidWorks.

Actual result

The first attempts failed with:

codex/sandbox-state-meta: missing field sandboxPolicy

Later attempts returned:

Computer control is unavailable for this action.

The same issue occurs with both SolidWorks and Calculator. No application is detected, modified, or saved.

Expected result

Codex should request permission for the visible target application and then interact with it.

    @TUSKWOOD

Codex Desktop Browser Use is broken.

    Exact error:
Mcp error: -32602: js: codex/sandbox-state-meta: missing field sandboxPolicy

    Impact:
@browser / in-app browser control cannot run. A minimal node_repl/js call fails before JavaScript executes, so this is not caused by the target website or local project.

    Related open issues:
    #29193
    #29219
    #29241

This appears related to a Desktop/app-server/node_repl metadata mismatch after Codex Desktop 26.616.x / 26.619.x.

    @shadowstar4222

Reproduced on Windows with Codex Desktop / Computer Use plugin version 26.616.41845.

    Additional observations:

    • Computer Use was installed, enabled, explicitly attached with @Computer, and retried after fully restarting Codex.
    • mcp__node_repl__js_reset succeeds and returns js kernel reset.
    • The first mcp__node_repl__js call fails before any JavaScript executes with:
Mcp error: -32602: js: codex/sandbox-state-meta: missing field sandboxPolicy
    • The failure occurs before sky.list_apps(), so no Windows application is detected or controlled.
    • Reproduced with a visible native Godot game window as the intended target.
    • Changing the thread filesystem permission profile did not affect the failure.

This appears to be at the Codex Desktop-to-node_repl request metadata boundary rather than in the Computer Use plugin bootstrap or target application.
