What issue are you seeing?

Chrome, Browser, and Computer Use disappeared from the Plugins UI after restarting and reinstalling Codex on Windows 11.

Local diagnostics:

  • codex features list shows browser_use=true, browser_use_external=true, computer_use=true, and in_app_browser=true
  • codex plugin marketplace list only shows openai-primary-runtime and openai-curated
  • openai-bundled is still referenced in ~/.codex/config.toml, but is not shown by codex plugin marketplace list
  • Cached files still exist under ~/.codex/plugins/cache/openai-bundled
  • Chrome native host is registered at HKCU:\Software\Google\Chrome\NativeMessagingHosts\com.openai.codexextension

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Uploaded thread: 019ef599-e6bb-7ca0-b969-e1efb6755425

What is the expected behavior?

Chrome, Browser, and Computer Use should appear in Plugins or be otherwise usable from Codex.

    Had same issue yesterday on Win10, thought it's a compatibility issue. But codex itself diagnosed Git absence on the machine.

    @zemeng5208

    I maintain WinBridge Recovery for Windows Codex Desktop bundled-plugin recovery: https://github.com/zemeng5208/winbridge-recovery

    The local state described here is exactly the kind of split-brain condition the project is designed to diagnose: openai-bundled is still referenced in config and its cached files/native host remain on disk, but codex plugin marketplace list no longer sees that marketplace, so Browser/Chrome/Computer Use disappear from the UI/runtime.

    WinBridge v3.1.1 checks the layers in order instead of blindly reinstalling: current official AppX bundled source -> active/generated openai-bundled marketplace -> versioned plugin caches and latest -> Native Host/runtime paths. If the official package still contains the bundled plugins but the user-owned marketplace/cache registration is missing or partial, it can stage and validate a complete copy from the already installed package, preserve rollback data, and switch only after the manifests/hash checks pass.

    I would still distinguish this from the Git-related comment above: missing Git can affect other Codex workflows, but it should not by itself explain an already-present official bundled plugin source disappearing from the active marketplace. If the AppX source itself does not contain the plugins or a server/account gate intentionally filters them, WinBridge should report that boundary rather than force availability.

    It does not modify WindowsApps or bundle OpenAI binaries.

  5. ACbang97 commented on Aug 27, 2026

    @ACbang97

    I can reproduce this on Windows, and in my case the evidence points to a bundled-plugin/runtime provisioning problem rather than an entitlement issue.

    Environment / symptoms:

    • Codex Desktop package: OpenAI.Codex 26.820.9563.0 (Microsoft Store / Windows app)
    • This has persisted across multiple desktop versions; reinstalling the app did not fix it.
    • features list shows all relevant capabilities enabled: browser_use=true, browser_use_external=true, browser_use_full_cdp_access=true, computer_use=true, in_app_browser=true, apps=true, plugins=true.
    • Ctrl+Shift+B opens the in-app browser successfully.
    • However, Chrome / Computer Use do not appear in the @ menu, and the Computer Use UI has no usable apps.
    • The official Chrome extension installs, and Desktop reports the browser extension as installed/enabled, but the extension still asks to open/install the desktop app and cannot connect.

    Plugin/runtime state:

    • codex plugin marketplace list --json only shows openai-primary-runtime and openai-curated; openai-bundled is missing.
    • The AppX package itself does contain the bundled plugins under app/resources/plugins/openai-bundled, including browser, chrome, and computer-use.
    • %USERPROFILE%\.codex\.tmp\bundled-marketplaces\openai-bundled does not exist.
    • %USERPROFILE%\.codex\plugins\cache\openai-bundled does not exist.
    • The generated config references the missing bundled cache (for example, NODE_REPL_TRUSTED_SERVICES points to the browser service under plugins/cache/openai-bundled).
    • Chrome Native Messaging Host is never provisioned: %LOCALAPPDATA%\OpenAI\extension\com.openai.codexextension.json is missing, and HKCU\Software\Google\Chrome\NativeMessagingHosts\com.openai.codexextension is absent.
    • Manually adding openai-bundled is rejected because it is a reserved marketplace.

    This looks like the Windows desktop app knows the features are enabled and ships the bundled plugins, but fails to materialize/register the trusted openai-bundled marketplace/cache and therefore never provisions the Chrome native host / Computer Use integration.

    I rely on Codex heavily, so I have avoided deleting/resetting the entire .codex directory because it contains persistent local project/session state. A repair path that can rebuild only the bundled plugin/runtime state without wiping .codex would be very helpful.
