Project “Mark all as read” does not mark visible unread threads as read #30855

Closed as duplicate

Description

@pmarsalona

Bug

In the Codex desktop app, using a project folder’s three-dot menu and selecting “Mark all as read” does not mark the project’s unread threads as read.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Open the Codex desktop app.
  2. In the left sidebar, find a project folder with unread threads.
  3. Click the project folder’s three-dot menu.
  4. Check/select “Mark all as read.”
  5. Observe the visible unread threads in that project.

Expected behavior

All unread threads in that project are marked as read, including the visible ones.

Actual behavior

The visible unread threads remain unread.

Environment

  • Codex app: 26.623.81905 (CFBundleShortVersionString)
  • Bundled Codex CLI: codex-cli 0.142.5
  • macOS: 26.5 (25F71)

Notes

This appears to affect the project-level bulk read action, not just hidden or filtered threads. I searched public openai/codex issues for similar “mark all as read”/unread-thread reports and did not find an obvious duplicate.

    @rudivs

    I can reproduce this on Codex app 26.707.31428 (build 5059) on macOS (Darwin 25.5.0 arm64 arm).

    After selecting “Mark all as read”:

    • the blue unread indicators remain;
    • the tasks remain ordered as though they are unread; and
    • “Mark all as read” disappears from the project context menu.

    Fully quitting and restarting the app does not resolve the issue: the unread indicators and unread-prioritised ordering remain.

    The disappearing menu option suggests that one source of unread state is updated, while the sidebar indicators and sorting continue to use stale or inconsistent persisted state.

    This issue is made more annoying because of the change in sort behaviour to place unread threads at the top (see #32091). The "Mark all as read" would have been a convenient workaround for that.
