Codex projects disappeared after updating ChatGPT Desktop to 26.707.72221 on Windows #33057
Description
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
Powered by Codex & OWL Version 26.707.72221 Released July 14, 2026

What platform is your computer?
Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64
What issue are you seeing?
I was previously using the standalone Codex desktop application.
When Codex was merged into the new ChatGPT desktop application last week, all of my existing Codex projects and conversations migrated successfully. Everything worked normally for several days, and all of my previous projects were visible and accessible.
Today I updated ChatGPT Desktop to Version 26.707.72221 (Released July 14, 2026). Immediately after the update, all of my Codex projects and conversation history disappeared from the application.
I am signed into the same OpenAI account that I have always used. Logging out and back in did not resolve the issue.
The application does not show any of my previous Codex projects even though they were available before today's update.
I verified that my local Codex data still exists. The folder:
%USERPROFILE%.codex
still contains approximately 2 GB of data, including SQLite databases and session files.
I also inspected the local database (state_5.sqlite) and confirmed that it still contains my previous thread metadata (approximately 24 historical threads), including projects.
This indicates that the local data has not been deleted. It appears that ChatGPT Desktop Version 26.707.72221 is no longer reading or displaying the existing local Codex state after the update.
Troubleshooting already attempted:
- Restarted the application.
- Logged out and logged back into the same account.
- Confirmed the .codex directory and SQLite databases still exist.
Expected behavior:
All previously migrated Codex projects and conversations should continue to appear after updating the desktop application.
Actual behavior:
All Codex projects and conversations disappeared after updating to Version 26.707.72221, despite the local data still existing.

Additional Windows reproduction:
After every full restart, Codex shows the saved projects in the sidebar, but initially reports no tasks/threads under them. The local thread data is intact. After creating or opening a new thread and waiting several minutes, the missing threads gradually reappear across all projects.
Environment:
Local evidence:
state_5.sqlite: 26.7 MBlogs_2.sqlite: 703.6 MBThis suggests that the data is not lost. The desktop sidebar/list hydration appears to scale poorly with a large number of internal subagent records. Creating or opening a thread seems to trigger a delayed index refresh.
Expected behavior: persisted user threads should appear promptly after startup, and internal subagent history should not block hydration of the visible project sidebar.

I am seeing the same Windows migration regression on a newer build.
After the morning update to the unified ChatGPT desktop app, all native local Codex projects disappeared. Existing local Codex tasks remain intact, but every affected task has
projectId: nulland appears under Tasks.list_projectsreturns 24 ChatGPT projects and zero local projects. This is not an archive or sidebar-filter issue. The September 11 log shows
source=sidebar_workspace_groupsanddirCount=15immediately before the loss. I can provide the log package privately if maintainers need it.Nathan-GFBC commentedon Sep 12, 2026
Read-only verification on the affected machine confirms the data remains in the live local Codex state database: 14 native local project records, 15 project-root records, and 267 thread records.
The preserved backup contains the same counts. The native project names include Clearview Property Reports, Parker Brent – Cert IV Building and Construction, GF Foundations, Business Finance, and Investing – Stocks Etc.
This points to a regression in the desktop app’s local-project loading/rendering path: the records are present locally, but Codex currently surfaces zero local projects and shows the affected threads with
projectId: null.Nathan-GFBC commentedon Sep 17, 2026
Local migration state now shows
projectsMigrated: truebutthreadAssignmentsMigrated: false. The local database contains project records, while all 268 thread records have a nullproject_id. Repointing a recreated Clearview project to the original workspace does not reattach tasks. This appears to be an incomplete task-assignment migration; a repair or rerun of that migration is needed.
