Description
What version of Codex is running?
codex-cli 0.30.0
Which model were you using?
gpt-5 high
What platform is your computer?
Darwin 24.4.0 arm64 arm
What steps can reproduce the bug?
Get codex working on a task that requires more than 30 seconds to finish. Close the lid of the Macbook Pro and take the laptop with you so that it looses connection to the wifi.
What is the expected behavior?
Expected behavior is that Codex detects that the Macbook Pro is attempting to sleep and waits to retry until the macbook is awake and the network is re-connected.
Alternatively, ask the user if it should retry.
What do you see instead?

I'm seeing this as well with 0.31.0 and it just happened spontaneously without any kind of observed network interruption.

For me this happens every single time.
archananarayanan commentedon Sep 16, 2025
This happens in the new codex vscode extension. Any resolutions yet ?
AmirTlinov commentedon Sep 16, 2025
It's possible that some versions of codex-cli for Windows had issues related to using "python3" vs "python" in the PATH, which could cause similar execution errors, especially on systems where only "python.exe" is present.

Set dns 8.8.8.8. If you’re still facing issues, please ensure that port 443 is open on your system.

I have the same bug but curl -v https://chatgpt.com is ok
ysun commentedon Oct 9, 2025
Exactly the same issue.
YuchengWang commentedon Oct 14, 2025
I just installed Python 3.13. the OS is Ubuntu 25.04, and the error occurs, how to avoid the error? I'm sure curl -v https://chatgpt.com has no error
TIMLONGG commentedon Oct 25, 2025
same. I suspected it was an issue with VSCode. After trying Cursor's Codex extension, my problem was successfully resolved.
zbsdsb commentedon Nov 19, 2025
但是我在 Cursor 的 Codex 扩展中还是有这个报错,其运行在WSL环境时,但是在终端中却没有影响

stream disconnected before completion: error sending request for url (https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/responses)这个问题怎么解决
iaghp commentedon Jul 31, 2026
Error still persists, can be due to server overload. I've been dealing with the issue all day.
Restating the codex app seems to resolve the issue temporarily.

stream disconnected before completion: error sending request for url (https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/responses)

got this issue again. I am on Windows in the UK. This makes the app unusable and extremely annoying since when it works it is really good.
bsmayer commentedon Aug 26, 2026
I also get this error often. Forking the conversation works for me sometimes. Starting a new chat with fresh context also works, but the original sessions keep pretty much unusable.

one year in, still happening
meanwhile https://status.openai.com/ doesn't even report degraded service. No vpns, same client that worked just fine hours earlier.
shaheershakir commentedon Sep 18, 2026
still happening on windows codex app, cli, vscode codex extension, tried reinstalling any known fix?
Drag-NDrop commentedon Oct 3, 2026
This is the main reason that i have begun to consider giving Claude a shot. I've always used OpenAI models. But this is just really not cool. I pay well over 100$ per month to OpenAI - but what is it worth, when Astra just cuts off midflight, and refuse to wake back up. Not worth my tokens, not worth my time, not worth my money.
I experience this is plain normal project/work chats in the web interface.

Same situation here in Lativa. Its been 2 days since I am working on 1 task. I have claude and cursor but they are working totally fine its just CODEX issue. Also openai support doesnt respond at all.
