Codex crashes when serializing image-heavy saved task payloads #36157
Codex desktop crashes when an older, image-heavy saved task is opened or read. The issue reproduces across two builds and appears to occur while Electron/V8 serializes the task payload for the renderer.
Reproduction
Use a saved task containing many image-generation and inline image outputs.
Reopen or request a read of that task.
The app crashes shortly afterward.
Observed behavior
Four native crashes occurred across two builds.
The crash signature is EXC_BREAKPOINT / SIGTRAP in the Chromium main process, with V8 ValueSerializer::HasCustomHostObject in the stack.
Reading the affected BitChat research task reproduced the failure; smaller task reads succeeded.
The affected task lineage contained roughly 700 MB of duplicated base64 image data.
Scope
Direct access to the related workspace files worked normally.
The workspace itself does not appear to be the cause; deserializing the oversized saved task payload appears to be the trigger.
Fresh tasks are unaffected.
Expected behavior
Codex should open the saved task safely, or fail gracefully without crashing the desktop app.
Workaround
Avoid reopening or reading the affected oversized task; use fresh tasks and access workspace files directly.
