Windows/Android Remote shows folder basename instead of the saved Desktop project name #36754

Description

@TOSWIM

What version of the Codex App are you using?

26.727.6591.0

What subscription do you have?

Omitted intentionally for privacy.

What platform is your computer?

Windows 11, connected through Codex Remote from the ChatGPT Android app.

What issue are you seeing?

Summary

The same local project is displayed with two different names:

  • Codex Desktop shows the project's saved display name.
  • ChatGPT Android Remote shows the primary folder's basename instead.

For example, if the saved project name is Example Project and its primary folder is working-folder, Desktop displays Example Project while mobile Remote displays working-folder.

The host connection and the visible chat collection confirm that both surfaces are showing the same project. This appears to be a project identity/presentation mismatch rather than two separate projects.

Steps to reproduce

  1. On Codex Desktop for Windows, add a local folder whose basename is working-folder.
  2. Save or rename the project to Example Project.
  3. Connect the ChatGPT Android app to that Windows host using Codex Remote.
  4. Open the same project on Desktop and mobile.
  5. Compare the project name shown in the Desktop project list with the mobile Remote project header.

Expected behavior

Both surfaces should show the saved project display name, Example Project.

Alternatively, if both project name and folder name are intentionally shown, the UI should label them clearly and consistently.

Actual behavior

  • Desktop: Example Project
  • Mobile Remote: working-folder

The mobile UI silently substitutes the primary folder basename for the saved project name.

Impact

This makes one project appear to be two different projects and creates a serious risk of selecting or discussing the wrong project, especially when users rely on custom project names for organization.

Additional information

  • Reproduced with a Windows Codex Desktop host and ChatGPT Android Remote.
  • A private in-product feedback report containing the original evidence was also submitted to OpenAI.
  • No private project names, filesystem paths, hostnames, device identifiers, account details, screenshots, chat titles, project IDs, or feedback identifiers are included here.
  • Related but not identical: iOS Remote Project List is not synchronized with Codex Desktop (Projects are not using Desktop as the source of truth) #36454 reports broader iOS/Desktop project-list and rename synchronization problems. This report specifically concerns mobile Remote deterministically displaying the folder basename instead of the saved Desktop project name.

    Additional reproduction on macOS/iOS:

    • Codex Desktop on macOS shows the saved project display name (for example, a renamed Japanese project name).
    • ChatGPT iOS Remote connects to the same Mac host and opens the same project/chat content successfully.
    • However, the iPhone project header/list shows the primary folder basename (for example, kk) instead of the saved Desktop project name.
    • This is therefore a label/identity presentation mismatch, not a connection or project-content mismatch.

Expected: iOS Remote should display the saved Codex Desktop project name, consistently with Desktop.

Additional reproduction on Windows desktop + ChatGPT Android Codex Remote (2026-10-10): the desktop local project has a saved custom display name, but Android Remote still displays the primary folder basename. I restarted the desktop app after an update was marked as requiring a restart; the Android project list remained unchanged. The connected host and chats are visible, so this is specifically the project label mismatch. No filesystem folder was renamed and no private paths or identifiers are included.
