Windows Computer Use fails with EnumWindows 0x80070002 and missing sky.documentation() #37201

Description

@Aphroditas

Environment

  • Platform: Windows 11 x64
  • Computer Use plugin version: 26.730.61639
  • In-app feedback ID: 019fd4c4-f84e-7fc0-a66d-a4ba7255bff7
  • The target application was visible on the active Windows desktop.
  • Remote execution was enabled.

What issue are you seeing?

The bundled Computer Use plugin is installed and enabled, but it cannot control Windows applications.

Following the bundled Computer Use skill instructions in a fresh JavaScript runtime produces:

TypeError: sky.documentation is not a function

The bundled @oai/sky module loads and exposes the sky object. However, the API required by the bundled Computer Use skill is missing:

await sky.documentation("guidance")
await sky.documentation("api")
await sky.documentation("confirmations")

During earlier attempts, both sky.list_apps() and sky.list_windows() also repeatedly failed with:

EnumWindows failed: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

Because the bundled skill requires these APIs and prohibits using an unsupported UI-control fallback, Computer Use is unusable in this environment.

Steps to reproduce

  1. Install and enable the bundled Computer Use plugin on Windows.
  2. Enable both the Computer Use MCP server and skill.
  3. Start a new Codex task.
  4. Initialize the bundled @oai/sky runtime according to the skill instructions.
  5. Call await sky.documentation("guidance").
  6. Observe that sky.documentation is not a function.
  7. In affected sessions, call sky.list_windows() or sky.list_apps().
  8. Observe the EnumWindows failure with error 0x80070002.

Troubleshooting already performed

  • Restarted the Codex/ChatGPT desktop application.
  • Restarted Windows.
  • Reinstalled the Computer Use plugin.
  • Started a completely new task.
  • Reset and recreated the JavaScript runtime.
  • Retried initialization from a fresh runtime.
  • Confirmed that the bundled @oai/sky module loads.
  • Kept the target application visible on the active desktop.
  • Enabled remote execution.

The failures persisted after these steps.

Expected behavior

The bundled Computer Use skill and bundled @oai/sky runtime should expose compatible APIs.

sky.documentation() should provide the required operating guidance, while sky.list_windows() and sky.list_apps() should enumerate visible Windows applications without failing. Computer Use should then be able to interact with the selected application.

Additional context

The problem appears to occur within the bundled Windows Computer Use runtime/helper layer rather than within the target application.

There are existing reports involving Windows Computer Use bootstrap, native-pipe, and helper instability, but I could not find an existing public report containing these exact errors:

TypeError: sky.documentation is not a function
EnumWindows failed: The system cannot find the file specified. (0x80070002)

The associated diagnostic report was submitted through the desktop app:

Closing as a likely duplicate of #37043. I added my distinct 0x80070002 error, missing sky.documentation() API, and feedback ID to that issue.
