0.148.0-alpha.9: legacy local chats remain absent from sidebar after successful paginated-history migration #38928

Open

Description

@jiayuan-byte

What happened

After upgrading the macOS ChatGPT Desktop bundled Codex CLI to 0.148.0-alpha.9, a set of previously visible, non-archived local chats disappeared from the sidebar.

The rollout files and state database are intact. The affected chats were successfully migrated using the supported command:

codex migrate-rollouts --apply --json --thread <id>

A subsequent read-only check reports already_paginated for every affected chat, but the chats still do not appear in the Desktop sidebar after a full quit/relaunch.

Evidence

  • codex doctor reports the rollout files and state-DB thread inventory agree, with no missing active rollout rows and no archive mismatches.
  • All affected chats are non-archived and not pinned.
  • The migrated chats are present in the state DB with history_mode = paginated and have projected thread-history items.
  • The Desktop local thread catalog either omits these chats or marks them as missing_candidate = 1.
  • The affected legacy records use model-provider value openai; local chats that remain visible use openai_http.
  • In this reproduction, 7 migrated openai chats are missing from the sidebar. One separate legacy realtime chat was deliberately excluded from migration/testing.
  • Selecting chronological order and checking Archived chats do not change the result.

Expected behavior

After a successful supported migration, every non-archived local chat should remain discoverable in the Desktop sidebar regardless of its legacy model-provider value.

Actual behavior

The chat content remains readable and migrated, but the Desktop sidebar directory does not include the affected chats.

Reproduction

  1. Have existing non-archived local chats created with the legacy openai model-provider metadata.
  2. Upgrade to the bundled Codex CLI 0.148.0-alpha.9.
  3. Confirm the chats are absent from the sidebar even with chronological order selected and no archive filter.
  4. Run codex migrate-rollouts --apply --json --thread <id> for each affected chat.
  5. Verify the command subsequently returns already_paginated.
  6. Fully quit and relaunch the Desktop app.
  7. Observe that the chats remain absent from the sidebar.

Requested fix

Please make the local sidebar catalog/reconciliation include migrated legacy openai records, or provide a supported, non-destructive command to rebuild/reconcile that catalog. The current public troubleshooting guidance covers chronological and archived filters but does not provide a recovery path for this state.

Environment

  • macOS 26.5.2 (Apple Silicon)
  • ChatGPT Desktop bundled Codex CLI 0.148.0-alpha.9
  • Local ChatGPT-authenticated setup

No session transcripts, session IDs, chat titles, paths, or logs are included in this report.

Hi @jiayuan-byte, your report looks related to a local session discovery/inventory gap rather than necessarily a lost rollout. I've released Codex Rescue Alpha5, a local read-only diagnostic tool that performs filesystem-first discovery across active and archived rollouts and cross-references SQLite/index metadata without modifying any state.

If you still have the affected local Codex directory, you can inspect it via:

    pip install codex-rescue==0.1.0a5
    codex-rescue sessions --json

No raw files or databases are needed. If you choose to share output, please review and sanitize any private repository paths or names first.
