[Linux/XFCE] ChatGPT Desktop 26.818.61809 emits protocol, feature-key, listener, and Chromium errors on startup #40412
Description
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
ChatGPT Desktop 26.818.61809 from the official OpenAI Linux DEB stable repository.
Bundled Codex CLI/app-server: 0.149.0-alpha.4.3.
What subscription do you have?
ChatGPT Plus.
What platform is your computer?
Linux 7.0.0-30-generic x86_64 x86_64
Linux Mint 22.3, XFCE, X11.
What issue are you seeing?
Launching the official Linux desktop app from a terminal succeeds: the window becomes ready, the bundled app-server initializes, account lookup succeeds, and the local connection reaches connected. However, startup emits several internal errors and warnings:
Failed to register codex:// protocol handler isPackaged=true
(node) [DEP0169] DeprecationWarning: `url.parse()` behavior is not standardized and prone to errors that have security implications.
(node) [DEP0180] DeprecationWarning: fs.Stats constructor is deprecated.
MaxListenersExceededWarning: Possible EventEmitter memory leak detected. 11 destroyed listeners added to [WebContents]. MaxListeners is 10.
Electron renderer console [warning]: Matched leaf route at location "/" does not have an element or Component. This means it will render an <Outlet /> with a null value by default resulting in an "empty" page.
ignoring invalid experimental feature enablement keys: apps_mcp_path_override
Electron renderer console [error]: RequestError: Failed to fetch undefined
Registration response error message: DEPRECATED_ENDPOINT
The apps_mcp_path_override warning is propagated as a connection-failed error by the remote-connections manager even though the same event reports state=connected.
The application remains locally usable, so these are not startup-fatal errors. They appear to be multiple packaging/runtime compatibility issues rather than a missing system dependency.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
-
Install the current
chatgptpackage from OpenAI's official Linux DEB repository. -
On XFCE/X11, ensure no ChatGPT process is already running.
-
Start the app from a terminal:
chatgpt
-
Wait for the main window and backend initialization to complete.
-
Observe the messages above on stderr.
-
Exit with
Ctrl+C.
The app-server initialization itself succeeds in roughly 0.5 seconds and the main window reaches ready-to-show.
What is the expected behavior?
- Startup should not emit deprecated Node API warnings from packaged application code.
- The
codex://handler should register consistently on supported Linux desktop environments. - Desktop feature flags should be compatible with the bundled app-server and should not mark a connected remote manager as
connection-failed. - Electron windows should not exceed the default listener limit during normal startup.
- The renderer should not issue a request with an undefined target.
- The bundled Chromium runtime should not attempt registration through a deprecated GCM endpoint.
Additional information
Protocol-handler checks show an integration mismatch:
$ xdg-mime query default x-scheme-handler/codex
chatgpt.desktop
$ gio mime x-scheme-handler/codex
No default applications for “x-scheme-handler/codex”
XFCE reports that xdg-settings get default-url-scheme-handler codex is not implemented.
Additional isolation evidence:
apps_mcp_path_overrideis not present in the user's Codex or desktop configuration.- Authentication succeeds (
authenticatedAccountPresent=true, result=succeeded). - The bundled Codex app-server handshake succeeds.
- No missing shared libraries, GPU initialization failure, fatal sandbox error, or native crash was observed.
26.818.61809is currently the installed and candidate version in the official repository.- The feature-key warning appears related to Unable to enable Remote Control on Mac #38095, but this reproduction is on Linux and also captures the protocol registration, listener, renderer-request, and bundled Chromium errors.
No account identifiers, local task IDs, private paths, tokens, prompts, or raw logs are included.
