Mobile project name is incorrect while in the remote view #40459
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
Windows Version 26.818.41509 / Android 1.2026.223 (20)
What subscription do you have?
Plus
What platform is your computer?
Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26200.0 x64
What issue are you seeing?
When connecting to a desktop instance of Codex via the ChatGPT app on android (the remote view), project names are incorrect.
I renamed a project on desktop to "foxbolt (cobal-ttools)". When connecting via remote to the desktop instance, it displays "cobalttools" instead as the project name.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
Feedback ID: 01a034e3-e1ff-7301-beaf-d1bd0d23b2df
What is the expected behavior?
I expect the remote view on mobile to show the same project names as on desktop.
I’m seeing what appears to be another manifestation of this issue on Windows + Android Remote.
Instead of showing another human-readable project/repository name, Remote displays an internal-looking identifier such as g-p-6a8bf03bcf408191b978b0b93bd02..., while the associated conversation still appears normally under Recent as 執行 Task 25 bounded repair.
The affected conversation had previously been pinned and then unpinned in Codex Desktop. However, I could not reproduce the problem with a simple test conversation, so pin/unpin is only a suspected trigger, not a confirmed cause.
I originally reported this separately as #40750. Since the observable behavior is the same class of Remote project-name mismatch, I’m consolidating the report here and closing #40750 as a duplicate.
Additional evidence
I can now confirm that the affected conversation belongs to the Stock project on Codex Desktop.
The project was previously named TwStock and has since been renamed to Stock.
On Android Remote, however, the Projects list still shows TwStock, and it also shows the internal-looking g-p-6a8bf03bcf408191b978b0b93bd02... entry.
The affected conversation 執行 Task 25 bounded repair is visibly located under the Stock project in Codex Desktop.
This strengthens the evidence that the Remote project metadata is not synchronized with the current Desktop project name. It also suggests that the g-p-... entry may refer to the same Stock project, possibly as an internal/fallback identifier, although that mapping is not yet independently confirmed.
This makes project rename / stale project metadata a more direct observable clue than the earlier pin/unpin hypothesis.
I observed another new internal-looking g-p-... project entry on Android Remote:
g-p-6a7bca7f8de08191bd540f13fe26d...
This is a different identifier from the previously reported:
g-p-6a8bf03bcf408191b978b0b93bd02...
I can now provide a more specific sequence for this new occurrence:
I started work from ChatGPT and sent it directly to Codex for execution.
Codex created a new chat for that task.
Android Remote showed a new g-p-... entry associated with that newly created chat.
I later moved the chat into my existing AllyVoxNote project in Codex Desktop.
Android Remote continued to show the original g-p-... entry instead of fully reconciling the chat/project association.
The earlier g-p-... entry and this new one belong to different conversations/projects, so this no longer appears to be a one-off corrupted project record.
This suggests that ChatGPT → Codex-created chats may retain a stale internal project/container association in Android Remote after the chat is moved into a normal Codex project.
I am using “internal project/container association” descriptively here; I cannot independently confirm what the g-p-... identifier represents internally.
Screenshot attached separately shows both distinct g-p-... entries at the same time.
I can reproduce this on both Windows and macOS Desktop hosts with iOS Remote. Renaming a local project in Desktop does not change its name in Remote: Remote continues to show the physical folder basename instead of the saved Desktop project name.
I also paired a second iPhone with the Windows host and observed the same stale/folder-derived project label. This rules out a single phone, a single mobile installation, and a Windows-only local-cache problem. It suggests that Remote is not receiving or applying project display-name updates from either desktop OS.
This occurs alongside the empty custom-section membership behavior reported in #42315, but the rename problem is independently reproducible.
"This directory is a local mirror of the ChatGPT project 'Project Beacon'."
So the underlying project association is intact; Remote is exposing the
internal g-p identifier instead of resolving the user-facing project name.
Remote also shows a separate "System32" project-like heading containing a
thread titled "Check Codex version", while no System32 project exists in the
desktop Projects sidebar. This appears consistent with Remote exposing a
working-directory-derived grouping as a project.
No files, project folders, metadata, or Remote configuration were modified
during diagnosis.
Expected behavior:
Android Remote should display the saved ChatGPT Project name ("Project Beacon")
and should not expose raw g-p identifiers or working-directory names as if
they were normal saved projects.
I have same issue currently, if you rename on Windows machine , the new names are not populated on android app. I have also seen the character and number string issue instead of project name.
Running latest android availble at time of this post
Running latest windows 11 app at time of this post
Logging out android app and back in did not fix anything.
Also tried force stopping app and clearing storage cache did not resolve.
Desktop project renames and chat reassignment are not reflected on the phone, making the reorganized workspace difficult to use.
Evidence from two user-provided phone screenshots compared with the desktop app's project/thread listing tools:
A saved desktop project has a new display name, but iPhone continues to show its original physical directory basename.
A chat assigned to a different desktop project remains under its original working-directory group on iPhone. The desktop listing confirms that its projectId points to the destination project while cwd still points to the original directory.
Another chat assigned to the renamed desktop project remains under a separate original-directory heading on the phone.
The user confirms that this newly created troubleshooting chat appears on the phone. Thus this is not a total failure to receive new chats; project labels/membership are specifically inconsistent.
The user cannot find the renamed project on the phone and reports inability to locate the chats organized under it.
Expected: mobile honors the saved desktop project display names and chat project assignments, or clearly explains any intentional difference in grouping.
Working-directory-based grouping is a hypothesis supported by the displayed names, not a verified internal root cause. We have not independently controlled the phone, tested mobile search/pinning, or verified a workaround. Desktop/mobile app and OS version numbers have not been captured.
Impact: desktop project organization cannot reliably be used to find and continue work on iPhone.
Private project names, paths, chat IDs, and screenshots are omitted from this public report. Related: #49915. Please investigate saved project metadata and reassignment propagation for macOS + iOS as well as the platforms already reported here.
I am seeing the same desktop/mobile project-name mismatch on Windows package version 26.930.3748.0, observed on October 3, 2026. In ChatGPT mobile's Codex view, connected to the same computer, four checked projects show names different from their saved desktop display names. The mobile names match the physical folder basenames. The table above contains three examples.
I compared the existing desktop project records with mobile screenshots; I have not performed a fresh rename experiment, cache reset, reinstall, or sign-out test. The exact mobile OS/app version is still to be collected. There is no evidence of file or chat loss in this report. Folder-derived grouping is an observation-based hypothesis, not a confirmed root cause.
Expected: mobile should use the saved desktop project display name, without requiring the actual directory to be renamed or moved.
Is anyone still seeing this on recent builds, and has anyone found a verified fix that preserves the existing folder paths? I have also reported this through OpenAI Help Center and received confirmation of escalation to a support specialist.
I can confirm the same issue with a macOS host and an Android device, observed on October 10, 2026. I use Codex in the ChatGPT macOS app and connect to it from the Codex tab in ChatGPT on Android. Remote access works very well overall, but project names on Android do not reflect the current names on my Mac. This affects multiple projects.
The Android project list appears to retain the original name of the primary folder attached to the project, even after I rename the project on macOS. I have tried:
Renaming the project itself in the macOS app.
Renaming the primary folder attached to the project as a source folder.
Clearing all app data for ChatGPT on Android.
Revoking the connection to my Mac and reconnecting.
None of these steps refreshed the project names on Android; it continues to show the old names.
Expected behavior: the Codex project list on Android should show the current project display names saved in the macOS app and reflect subsequent renames.

Additional Windows + Android reproduction on current builds.
Environment:
Observed behavior:
A normal ChatGPT Project named "Project Beacon" appears correctly by name
in the Windows desktop sidebar.
In Android Remote, that same project instead appears under its raw local
mirror identifier:
g-p-6a47e0edda0c81918f28f14683b7118d
I performed a read-only check of:
%USERPROFILE%.codex.chatgpt-projects
g-p-6a47e0edda0c81918f28f14683b7118d
Its AGENTS.md explicitly states:
"This directory is a local mirror of the ChatGPT project 'Project Beacon'."

internal g-p identifier instead of resolving the user-facing project name.
