macOS desktop: Projects sidebar is empty although saved projects still exist #41428
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
Not available from the running app session
What subscription do you have?
Unknown
What platform is your computer?
Darwin 25.5.0 arm64 arm
What issue are you seeing?
The Projects sidebar is empty, so saved projects cannot be opened from the app. The app's internal project hierarchy still contains the saved projects, which indicates that the data exists but the sidebar does not render or expose it.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
Open Codex Desktop on macOS.
View the Projects section in the sidebar.
Observe that no projects are visible or accessible.
Inspecting the app's project hierarchy shows that saved projects are still present in the Projects section.
What is the expected behavior?
All saved projects should be visible in the Projects sidebar and selectable so their conversations can be opened.
Additional information
Observed during a voice chat. The saved hierarchy included five projects at the time of the report, while the visible Projects sidebar was empty.
I can reproduce this on a newer macOS desktop build:
ChatGPT desktop: 26.820.71523 (build 7226)
Bundled Codex CLI/app-server: 0.150.0-alpha.8
macOS 14.4.1, arm64
Observed behavior
While an existing project conversation is still open and its full conversation content remains visible in the main pane, the left sidebar suddenly loses its catalog:
Projects displays “No projects”.
Recent displays “No chats”.
The currently open task continues to show its project/task title and conversation content.
There is no deletion confirmation or visible indexing/synchronization error.
This demonstrates that the underlying open conversation still exists while the sidebar project/recent projection has become empty. The UI makes all saved work look deleted even though an active project conversation is plainly still loaded.
Expected behavior
Existing projects and unarchived conversations should remain visible in Projects and Recent.
If sidebar hydration or catalog synchronization fails, Desktop should preserve the last known project/thread list and show a recoverable sync warning.
Desktop should automatically rebuild the sidebar catalog from canonical thread/project state.
The currently open project conversation must always have a corresponding visible sidebar entry.
Please provide a supported “rebuild sidebar index” action that does not delete conversations, authentication, worktrees, or project metadata.
This occurred alongside other recent Desktop turn-lifecycle reliability problems, but this report is specifically about the project/recent sidebar catalog disappearing. No screenshot, thread ID, local path, project name, account details, raw logs, or conversation content is included.
