Computer Use shows no native Windows apps #43465

Open

Description

@FOF-404-labs

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.901.6511.0

What subscription do you have?

plus

What platform is your computer?

Windows 11 x64

What issue are you seeing?

Computer Use loads, but cua.getState() returns no native Windows apps:

{"apps":[],"browsers":[{"name":"Codex In-app Browser","type":"iab"}]}

Steam was running but was not listed. Running Codex as administrator did not change this.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Enable Computer Use.
  2. Start Steam or another native Windows app.
  3. Call cua.getState().
  4. Observe apps: [].

This was reproduced repeatedly, including after launching Codex as administrator.

What is the expected behavior?

Computer Use should list running native Windows apps and allow window capture/control.

Additional information

Impact: local Tauri desktop UI/E2E testing is blocked because no desktop application can be captured or controlled.

    @davidosullivan

    I can reproduce this on Windows with the same browser-only Computer Use surface.

    Environment:

    • ChatGPT Plus
    • Windows 11 Home, build 26200.9445

    Observed behavior:

    • Computer Use is installed/enabled; Calculator is open and maximized.
    • Fresh local Codex tasks still return apps: [], while the Codex in-app browser is available.
    • Calling cua.getApp("Calculator") fails because cua.getApp is not a function.
    • I reinstalled the plugin, restarted the ChatGPT Desktop app and Windows, and retried after the update.
    • I also added [features] / js_repl = true to %USERPROFILE%\.codex\config.toml, fully restarted ChatGPT Desktop, and started a new task. Native app discovery is still empty.

    This appears to be the same Windows native-surface initialization failure rather than an app, monitor, or elevation issue.

    Hey, I'm not sure if this works for everyone but give this a try
