Feature request: Configurable, always-visible global status line in the Codex app #44800
/status works well within an individual chat, and I can check my 7-day usage limit by clicking my organisation name in the bottom-left corner. However, both require interrupting my workflow to check usage.
Since moving from the CLI to the app, I miss having a configurable status line that stays visible. This is especially useful when running multiple chats simultaneously and trying to keep track of my overall usage and burn rate.
Proposed solution
Add a configurable, always-visible status line at the app level that persists when switching between chats. Something like [statusline.cc](https://www.statusline.cc/) illustrates the kind of customisation I have in mind.
At a minimum, it should display:
The percentage of my 7-day usage allowance consumed or remaining.
When that allowance resets.
Usage updates automatically, without opening a menu or running /status.
Additional configurable fields, such as short-term usage limits and usage trends, would also be useful.
Benefit
A persistent, account-wide usage indicator would help me pace work across concurrent chats, spot unexpectedly high consumption, and avoid hitting a usage limit unexpectedly.
First comment here — this pacing problem is exactly why I built CodexReserve for myself: a minimal Mac menu bar meter for the 5h + weekly limits with reset times and a chime at 50/20%, so exhaustion never surprises mid-session. Free and open source: https://github.com/yourarnav/CodexReserve — an in-app always-visible line is still the real fix.
I would actually prefer the usage indicators to be integrated directly into the top toolbar of the Codex desktop application, alongside the existing control buttons.
There is plenty of unused horizontal space in this area.
A compact display such as:
5h: 68% | 7d: 42%
would be sufficient.
Hovering over each percentage could reveal the exact reset time.
This approach would keep usage information permanently visible without taking up any additional space in the chat area.
The indicators should update automatically and remain visible when switching between conversations.
I believe this would be the cleanest and most practical native implementation for Codex on macOS.
