Windows Codex Desktop 26.917.6896.0: existing PM tasks lose native cross-task tools after update #47510
After updating Codex Desktop on Windows on 2026-09-23, existing local PM tasks no longer receive the native cross-task/thread-management tool family. The same absence is observed in multiple PM tasks. Restarting the app did not restore the tools.
First noticed after today's desktop update (2026-09-23)
Existing local Codex tasks, including long-running PM/coordinator tasks
Actual behavior
The callable tool catalog lacks list_threads, read_thread, wait_threads, send_message_to_thread, handoff_thread, and automation_update. App-provided task-coordination instructions still direct agents to use these tools. Other tools are available. As a result, a PM cannot inspect, resume, or send instructions to existing user-visible tasks.
The tools are absent from discovery, rather than present with a failing handler. The user can still open the target tasks in the desktop UI. Restarting the desktop app did not resolve the mismatch.
Expected behavior
Existing local tasks should receive the native task-management tools when the capability is enabled. If intentionally unavailable, the app should expose a clear status and supported recovery procedure; instructions should not reference tools omitted from the callable catalog.
Reproduction
Update the Windows Codex Desktop app to package 26.917.6896.0.
Resume an existing local coordinator/PM task and ask it to inspect or message another existing task.
Inspect the available tool catalog: the native thread-management tools above are absent.
Restart the app and resume the task; the tools remain absent.
Repeat in another PM task; the same symptom occurs.
Request
Please investigate the desktop-to-task tool registration/rehydration path for this Windows build and provide a recovery method that preserves existing conversations and active tasks.
Potentially related but not identical: #45166 (earlier Windows build, missing native tools), #40852 (macOS build where read tools remained), #33947 (existing-task tool manifest not rehydrated after a gate transition). Root cause is not established here.
No customer information, task IDs, repository contents, credentials, or raw logs are included.
