[Linux][Desktop 26.917] typing freezes with blinking caret and ResizeObserver bursts #47628

Open

Description

@omid511

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

ChatGPT Desktop 26.917.62051 (chatgpt-bin 26.917.62051-1, installed from OpenAI's Arch repository).

What subscription do you have?

Not provided.

What platform is your computer?

Linux 7.2.6-1-cachyos x86_64 unknown (CachyOS); NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1660 SUPER using the nvidia kernel driver.

What issue are you seeing?

The desktop app repeatedly becomes unresponsive while typing into the message composer. The text cursor keeps blinking, but key presses stop registering for several seconds. The problem also occurs while a task is updating. This is a UI/input freeze, not just a slow model response.

After a full normal relaunch, the primary renderer again emitted bursts of:

[desktop-notifications][global-error] ResizeObserver loop completed with undelivered notifications.

The same message is also forwarded as an Electron renderer console error, so two log lines can represent one event. In a short sample from the fresh process, there were at least 50 such events between 2026-09-23 18:52:03Z and 18:59:04Z. Several occurred around reasoning-summary updates, and another burst occurred while composing a message. The main process also recorded main_thread_jank_snapshot mainThreadJankCountSinceLastSnapshot=1 at 18:51:19Z.

No GPU process crash or launch failure was logged in this fresh process. These observations correlate with the freezes but do not establish that the ResizeObserver error causes them; the log does not identify the observer callback or component.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

  1. Fully quit and relaunch ChatGPT Desktop normally on Linux.
  2. Open a Codex conversation and type in the composer while a turn is active or reasoning/status items update.
  3. Observe intermittent pauses: the caret continues blinking while typed keys do not appear.
  4. Inspect the desktop journal around the pause for ResizeObserver loop completed with undelivered notifications. and main_thread_jank_snapshot entries.

The behavior is intermittent. A complete profile reset and a --disable-gpu A/B test have not been performed.

What is the expected behavior?

Typing and cursor interaction should remain responsive while conversation content, reasoning summaries, and status items update. Layout observer notifications should not repeatedly loop or coincide with input freezes.

Additional information

The bundled Codex CLI reports concurrent_reasoning_summaries as false; there is no override enabling it in the user's config.toml. Thus the workaround described in #33996 is already in effect here.

Related open Windows report with closely matching typing symptoms and ResizeObserver bursts: #39120. The macOS report #42495 notes that the error can also appear as log noise without a visible freeze, so this report does not treat the error as proof of causation.

Raw logs are omitted because they contain task identifiers, local paths, and account metadata.
