[Dots] Cloud Computer shows “Unavailable” while the Dot and ChatGPT app remain usable #50115

Open

Description

@GGBondBlueWhale

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

Exact About-dialog version was not captured at the time of this report.

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Pro.

What platform is your computer?

ChatGPT desktop app on macOS. The exact macOS build was not captured at the time of this report.

What issue are you seeing?

A Dot that was otherwise working normally lost access to its own built-in cloud computer.

The important distinction is:

  • The Dot itself still works and can continue normal chat.
  • The ChatGPT desktop app itself still works.
  • This is not the user's personal/local computer showing Offline.
  • The affected entry is specifically the Dot's own Cloud Computer, which now shows “Unavailable.”

Opening the Dot's computer panel shows the Cloud Computer as unavailable, and it can no longer be opened or used. The UI does not provide a reason, retry action, recovery action, or information about whether the existing cloud-computer state is preserved.

The cloud computer had previously been usable and later entered this unavailable state without the Dot conversation itself becoming unavailable.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

This is an observed failure; a deterministic clean reproduction has not been established.

  1. Open an existing, working Dot in the ChatGPT desktop app.
  2. Confirm that the Dot can still receive messages and respond normally.
  3. Open the Dot's profile/computer panel.
  4. Inspect the Dot's built-in Cloud Computer entry.
  5. Observe that it displays “Unavailable.”
  6. Attempt to open or use the cloud computer.
  7. The cloud computer cannot be used, even though the Dot and the rest of the app remain functional.

What is the expected behavior?

The Dot's cloud computer should remain available, or transition through a clear recoverable state such as Starting and return online.

If the cloud computer cannot be started, the UI should provide:

  • a specific reason or error state;
  • a supported retry/restart or recovery action;
  • a clear indication of whether existing files, browser sessions, and workspace state are still preserved; and
  • guidance on whether the problem is temporary service availability, provisioning, account eligibility, or another condition.

Additional information

Observed on October 1, 2026, in the US Eastern time zone.

A screenshot clearly shows the Dot's Cloud Computer — Unavailable state. It can be provided if maintainers need it.

No root cause is claimed. This report does not currently claim file loss or state reset because the cloud computer cannot be accessed to verify its contents.

Related but distinct reports:

This report is narrower: the Dot and ChatGPT app remain usable, but the Dot's own Cloud Computer directly shows Unavailable and cannot be used.

    @kmagpiedev

    I am experiencing the same core symptom on the ChatGPT desktop app on Windows, with a Pro account. The dot conversation remains usable, but the dot's own cloud computer shows Offline / Computer unavailable and cannot be accessed.

    This started around October 2, 2026, 00:17 UTC (09:17 KST) after the cloud desktop had been working in the same session. The screen briefly reappeared during loading once, then became unavailable again.

    Observed errors from the dot's control tools:

    • failed to connect native pipe: Connection refused (os error 111)
    • Protocol error (Target.setDiscoverTargets): Target closed

    Resetting the control-tool session and retrying state discovery did not restore access. No usable cloud-computer restart/recovery action was available. This does not establish file loss or the current state of applications inside the cloud computer.

    I filed #50130 before the duplicate-detection bot pointed me here. I am consolidating this Windows report here and closing #50130 as a duplicate report, not as resolved. The root cause is still unknown. Please advise on a supported way to restore the existing cloud computer while preserving its files and state.
