Codex Desktop repeatedly disconnects with 503 and WebSocket errors #52447
What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
26.1002.52244
What subscription do you have?
ChatGPT Pro 200
What platform is your computer?
Windows 11 Pro 64-bit, build 26200 (10.0.26200)
What issue are you seeing?
Codex Desktop frequently disconnects while processing requests. The issue affects both the main task and child agents created through inter-agent communication.
The affected request path is:
wss://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/responses
Observed errors include:
503 Service Unavailable
We're currently experiencing high demand
websocket closed by server before response.completed
stream disconnected before completion: IO error: peer closed connection without sending TLS close_notify
Codex retries the request several times, but many attempts still fail. The failures occur across multiple independent threads, including child-agent requests.
From the local Codex logs during the affected period, I observed 47 sampling retry events, including 34 HTTP 503 responses, several high-demand errors, and multiple WebSocket/TLS disconnects.
The issue prevents long-running development tasks from completing reliably and causes child agents to fail or repeatedly reconnect.
I tested the local network separately:
status.openai.com returned HTTP 200 repeatedly.
chatgpt.com was reachable.
api.openai.com was reachable and returned the expected 401 without an API key.
WinHTTP has no configured proxy.
Codex is using the Windows system certificate store with no custom CA configured.
This makes a basic local DNS, certificate, or connectivity problem less likely. Please investigate whether there were account-, model-, region-, or concurrency-related capacity issues affecting the Codex Responses WebSocket endpoint.
